BANDEIRA, MANUEL
50 Poemas Escolhidos Pelo Autor.
. [Rio de Janeiro, 1955 ] Ministerio da educacao e cultura, servicio de documantacao. (Os cadernos de cultura ) 86pp. paperback. wrappers and text sl. browned. With a handwritten dedication to Ronald Bottrall, by the author, signed and dated Rio (?) 1955.
¶ Bandeira (1886 - 1968) wrote over 20 books of poetry and prose. In 1904, he found out that he suffered from tuberculosis, which encouraged him to move from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro, because of Rio's tropical beach weather. In 1922, after an extended stay in Europe where Bandeira met many prominent authors and painters, he contributed poems of political and social criticism to the Modernist Movement in São Paulo. Bandeira began to publish his most important works in 1924. Bandeira became a respected Brazilian author and wrote articles in several newspapers and magazines, as well as teaching Hispanic Literature in Rio de Janeiro. Bandeira began to translate into Portuguese canonical plays of world literature in 1956, which he continued to do until his last days. He died in Rio de Janeiro. Bandeira's poems are of a unique delicacy and beauty. Recurrent themes can be found in his works: the love of women, his childhood in the Northeast city of Recife, friends, health problems. His delicate health affected his poems, in a manner similar to the last poems of Jorge Luis Borges. Many of Manuel Bandeira's poems depict the limits of the human body. [157C].

CARR, J[AMES] L[OYD]
The First Saturday in May; an Echo of a Shropshire Lad
. The Tern Press, Shropshire, 1993. Hardcover. First book Edition, limited to 140 numbered copies printed on Lana paper and signed by the publishers, Nicholas and Mary Parry. Landscape small8vo. Unpaginated. Decorated boards. Illustrated with eight black and white wood engravings from drawings and photographs taken at various villages on the first Saturday in May, 1993,by Nicholas Parry. In fine state. No dust wrapper, as issued. A delightful account of the first village cricket match of the 1936 season and the train journey to and from the game. Carr's story was first printed in the cricketing anthology 'Fine Glances', issued three years previously. White and green pictorial paper over boards. Title in red on front cover and spine. outer edge untrimmed. Textured green end papers A charming book on cricket. delightful little story by J.L Carr recalling a match he played at Bridgenorth in Worcestershire in 1936. Strangely, this attractive item is not widely known. Byron Rogers wrote a highly acclaimed biography of JL Carr , but the First Saturday in May is not shown in the list of books written by Carr. It also escaped the attention of Stephen Gibbs in Post Padwick. J.L. Carr. 1912-1994, was one of the great polymaths of the twentieth century, putting his hand to teaching, travelling, novels, and social history, and even serving a stint as a photographer for the R.A.F. Famed for his eccentricity, he went through six publishers, one for each novel he wrote, until he formed his own Quince Tree Press. This is a beautiful and wistful account of a half-remembered pre-war cricket match: 'At least two of us would die in fixtures even then tentatively arranged for our generation." 1993 . Loosely inseted is a handwritten letter by Mary Parry dated 11-9-2004.

DRAYTON, MICHAEL (1563 - 1631 )
Nimphidia: The Court of Fayrie. Circa 1625. Illustrated By Nicholas Parry
. Nimphidia: The Court of Fayrie. Circa 1625. Illustrated by Nicholas Parry. Tern Press, Market Drayton. 2004, Sixteen watercolours. 52(2)p. 13" x 9.25". Original watercolours scanned and printed digitally by North Shropshire Printers. Text in Caslon on Magnani. Grey cloth spine , leaf-print pattern in brown and tan paper over boards. One of a limited edition of 50 copies. Nimphidia is a narrative poem (published in 1627) about fairies, with King Oberon having many adventures when he sets off in pursuit of his queen. Michael Drayton (1563-1631). was born at Hartshill in Warwickshire in 1563 and as a youth became page to Sir Henry Goodeere of Polesworth. Goodeere is to be credited for Drayton's education. Drayton fell in love with Sir Henry's daughter, Anne, who served as an inspiration for 'Idea'. Drayton's career as a poet was long: from his first published work in 1591 to his last in 1630. He died in comparative poverty, but was buried in Westminster Abbey. He was an extremely prolific writer, producing historical, topographical, and religious verse, as well as odes, sonnets, and satires. His The Ballad of Agincourt opens with the famous lines: "fayre stood the winde for France When we our sailes advaunce ". This, Drayton's most popular work. Nymphidia is a mock-heroic series of fairy poems, or 'Nimphalls'1, much influenced by Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Drayton died in London on December 2, 1631. He was buried in Westminster Abbey under a monument with an epitaph by Ben Jonson commissioned by the Countess of Dorset. [ DR - 3 ]( private press ).

( Buch der Rupprecht-Presse , 38 ) München : Rupprecht-Presse, 1927, small 4to. full vellum. 83 [1] pp. Number 19 of an edition of 150 numbered copies hand-printed on Bedenk paper. A example of fine printing by the most profoundly German private press of the early 20th century. Founded in 1914 in Munich by typographer Fritz Helmut Ehmcke, the Rupprecht Presse published over a span of 20 years some 57 books, of which this No. 38. Drawing mainly on German literature for his sources, Ehmcke printed in artistic form a number of works by philosophers, and this poem composed by pro-Reformation satirist Johann Fischart (1546 - 1590) was typical of his choices. One of the most prominent writers of his time, Fischart first saw his poem published in 1576, and it was regarded as one of the most distinguished works of the last quarter of the 16th century. As in all Rupprecht Presse offerings, Ehmcke designed the covers, endpapers and typefaces for this work. Text is in Ehmcke-Schwabacher, designed in 1920; headings in Ehmcke-Fraktur, designed in 1909 and cut by noted typographer Louis Hoell. Hoell also worked with the renowned Bremer Presse of Munich, as did calligrapher Anna Simon, who created the handwritten initials in red for this volume. Finely printed with wide margins on Bedenk hand-made paper with deckled edges. T.e. gilt.( private press ).
