Contemporary half calf on marbled boards, flat spines ruled in gilt, with title labels, red sprinkled edges, lightly rubbed. Spine ends with some wear, volume two head with small loss. Some very light staining to volume two but overall a very handsome and fresh copy.First edition of an important travel account of the Levant by Jacob Berggren (1790-1868), chaplain to the Swedish embassy in Constantinople. Contains an accurate account of Constantinople at this time and a narrative of Berggren's travels in the area between 1820-22. He visited Syria, Lebanon, the Holy Land and Jordania. One appendix (70 pp.) deals with plants collected by Berggren and described by the Swedish botanist Göran Wahlenberg. First Italian edition of a travel account devoted to Turkey, Bulgaria and Moldavia, and includes a chapter about Troy based on Pietro Correr's report from his visit in 1761. Originally published in French at Lausanne in 1772, translated from Boscovich's manuscript by Pierre Henin. Rudjer Josib Boscovi'c was born in 1711 in Ragusa (Dalmatia) and became a Jesuit diplomat and polymath who made several scientific and diplomatic missions around the world. He joined the British Ambassador Sir James Porter to Constantinople in 1746. On his return journey he travelled through Bulgaria and Moldavia before he reached Warsaw where he stayed for several months. It's possible that his ms was translated during the time in Warsaw since his friend Pierre Henin served at the French embassy there. Cf Atabey 137. Whyte p. 220.

A Swedish version of "Voyage de la Propontide et du Pont Euxin" (Paris 1800), translated by Bergstedt and with his comments and addendum. Includes additional descriptions of Smyrna, the Troad, the islands of Zea, Tenedos, Myteline, Chios, Samos, Rhodes, etc, and the ruins of Miletus and Ephesus. Includes Dallaway's descriptions of the Bosporus and Constantinople and a translation of Orpheus' poem about "the Argonautic train". References from works by Peyssonnel, D'Ohsson and William Eton have been used. The translator, Le Chevalier, was a Swedish diplomat who travelled extensively to Egypt, Constantinople and Greece between 1794 and 1797. The first part contains mainly his own travel account. The second half of the book with worming in lower inner margins, not affecting any text. A few small holes running through the spine. First edition. The author was a Catholic Armenian and interpreter to the Count de Ludolf, minister of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies at Constantinople. Title pages and plates are narrowly cut. Title to second part of volume one with some minor loss at outer margin. Contemporary full mottled calf, spines with five raised bands richly decorated in gilt, title labels, rubbed and hinges cracked, spine ends worn. Volume one in a late issue of the first edition or maybe the second edition (?), the other volumes in first edition.French edition of one of the most famous and influential early European travel account to the Middle East, first published in Italian in 1650-63. In 1614 della Valle set out for a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. On his long journey he visited Turkey, Egypt, the Holy Land, Syria, Persia and India before he returned home to Rome in 1626. His account is based on letters sent to his friend the Neapolitan physician Mario Schipano. Volume one contains letters from Constantinople where he spent 18 months, the second and third are devoted to Persia where he stayed for four years, and the fourth to India and his return journey via Basra, Aleppo, Cyprus, Sicily, Corsica and Malta. Della Valle spoke proficient Arabic, Persian and Turkish which ennabled him to understand more of the foreign cultures he visited than many of the other Western travellers at this time. First edition.Ferrieres-Sauveboeuf was a French diplomat who for many years travelled throughout the Levant, Persia, Arabia and Caucasia including several visits to Constantinople. He was fluent in Turkish and Persian. His account is rich with information of the countries, people, characters, religion, etc. and mainly based on his own observations. Further he records much details about the Turkish-Russian war of 1788-9. He was engaged to undertake secret missions in the area under the ministry of Vergennes who earlier had been French ambassador to the Porte (from 1755). It might explain his loyalty to Vergennes and the vitriolic attacks against Comte de Choiseul Gouffier who was the ambassador in Constantinople at the time (1784-91). Atabey 428 (second ed.).
