Original photograph of Chang, the Giant. Size: 6,4 x 10,8 cm. He is dressed in a Chinese traditional costume, most likely his performace outfit. Chang Woo Gow was born in Fuzhou (Canton) in the 1840's. He was well educated and travelled around the world performing as "Chang the Chinese Giant". His height was claimed to be over 2,4 meter!. In 1878 he retired from stage and settled in Bournemouth, where he operated a Chinese teahouse and a curio store.

A set of ten original postcard size photographs, each 14 x 9 cm. Each inscribed on verso in ink with name of the actor, his role and the title of the drama in which he is pictured in costume. Six are dated Kabuki-za 14/4/28 and four are dated 5/10/28. Kabuki-za was the famous 19th century Ginza theatre rebuilt in 1924 after the big earthquake and finally demolished in 2010. Actors included are: Sadanji, Genjiro and Fukusuke Nakamura; Mitsugoro Bando; Utaeyemon [Uzaemon] and Shimbashi Embujo. Kept in original printed envelope from the fashionable department store of the 1920's, Kamigata Ya in Ginza, Tokyo. Rare to find Kabuki actor photographs which are identified and dated like this set.

Small tear neatly repaired to inner margin of pages 41/2. First edition of this charming book about Tahiti which resulted from Stuart-Wortley's visit to the island in 1880. Oblong folio. Pp. (iv), (i) and 25 coloured collotypes, of which 24 made from photographs with captions in English. Including title and introduction in English by Suteta Takashima, and at rear a Japanese colophon. Original silk covered boards, g.e., extremities with light wear and covers slightly dusty. Title label on front cover. Scarce work with lovely colour illustrations of sakura or cherry blossom in Tokyo including pictures from three well-known flower resorts: Ueno Park, Mukojima and Koganei. Kazumasa Ogawa (1860-1929), renowned Japanese photographer opened the first photographic studio in Tokyo in 1882. He published this type of collotype album to promote Japanese culture to westerners at the end of the 19th century.

The plates are reproduced photographs taken by Ogawa, Japan's leading photographer at the time, and printed by National Chemigraph Co. in St. Louis U.S.A. A beautiful and crisp copy.

Pp. 120; iv, 152, (2). With 25 mounted albumen photographs on card board by Alexandre, of which one is a map of India and 23 are paintings by the author. Original printed wrappers bound in contemporary decorative Indian cloth, title lables on spine, rubbed, chipped at extremities. Bookplate. Presentation inscription (second vol.). First edition, limited to 100 copies. Rare diary account of a voyage to Ceylon and India by Jean-Baptiste Robie (1821-1910), a renowned Belgian painter of still lives and landscapes, mainly known for his rose paintings. Robie's voyage went via Suez and Aden to Ceylon where he stayed for a while at Colombo and Kandy. He continued to India where he spent a couple of weeks in the djungle in Uttar Pradesh. He visited Calcutta, Allahabad, Agra, Delhi and the south of India; Madura, Trichinopoly, Tanjore and Madras in Tamil Nadu. The photos depict several famous sites and temples along the route and a few of tiger and leopard hunting. No auction record of this work since 1975!

Oblong folio. Size: 19 x 42 cm. With lithographic title and 24 hand-coloured collotype printed plates. Original silk padded boards, mount Fuji in embrodery on upper cover, silk ties, all edges gilt. Old inscription on front paste down. Kozaburo Tamamura (1856-1923?) was a famous Japanese photographer with a studio in Yokohama where he specialized in tourist photographs for export. In the early 1900's a branch office in Kobe was opened. A deluxe edition of this album comprising 24 hand coloured collotypes with descriptive captions in English, protected with tissue guards. The beautiful plates depict scenes from the country side, gardens, parks, sea and temple grounds from different parts of Japan. A wonderful copy of a scarce work.

[A Japanese lacquer album with 50 hand coloured photographs. Ca 1880's].
A charming small Japanese album (18 x 13,5 cm) with 50 hand coloured albumen photos (13,5 x 9 cm), protected with tissue guards, pasted on thick cardboard. The leaves are double folded. Original lacquered boards with gilt decorations on both covers. The album comprises photos with 25 scenic views from different parts of Japan; Yokohama, Nikko, Hakone, Kamakura, Tokyo, etc. Many of the photos have printed captions. The verso contains 25 photographs of people, mainly of women in different costumes and situations, of which many are portraits taken in a studio, others depict scenes from everyday life. None of these photos have any captions. Some with foxing to the card board but all the photos are in good condition. A most appealing album. This type of souvenir albums begun to appear in the second half of the 19th century in Japan. At first most of the studios were based in Yokohama but after the 1880's several studios opened in Tokyo, Kobe and Nagasaki. See Terry Bennett, Old Japanese Photographs, London, Quaritch 2006.

Comprises illustrations from Samaria including views, people and ceremonial scenes from the Holy Mountain of Gerissim photographed by Lewis Larsson, skilled Swedish photographer. The accompanying text is written by John Whiting. They both belonged to the utopian Christian sect called the American Colony formed by religious pilgrims who emigrated to Jerusalem from the US and Sweden. The text has been translated into Swedish from the author's manuscript (in English) by Ernst Klein. Prefaces by Selma Lagerlöf and Sven Hedin. Published in a limited edition of 300 copies, of which this is no. 102.
