[CRINOLINES - CARICATURES].
Crinoline, its Difficulties and Dangers. A Series of Twenty Illustrations from Nature, by "Quiz". Dedicated to the Ladies, by the Publishers. London, Read & Co., Johnson's Court, Fleet Street, no date (about 1850-60).
A striking folded panorama with twenty comic hand coloured lithograph illustrations. Tear to first fold (no loss). As issued in original cloth with blue pictorial label to front cover, very lightly rubbed. Size: 15,5 x 13,3 cm. This is a satirical work about the problems of wearing crinolines. Published under the psedunoym "Quiz" which might be Edward Caswall (1814-78). Scarce especially with hand coloured illustrations.

Two volumes. Paris, Nepveu, 1811-12.
16mo. Pp. xxxvi, 144; (iv), 172; 188, (iv), 220 + pp. (iv), xxxiv, 236; (iv), 234. With 108 engraved plates, of which 101 are beautifully handcoloured and 8 folding. Contemporary red quarter calf on red paper covered boards, ruled in gilt, spines decorated and lettered in gilt. Partly with some minor browning but overall a very fine set. The last two volumes "Coup-d'oeil" were also published in the same year with the title "La Chine en miniature" (vols. 5-6). A complete set (in six volumes) of Breton's charming work devoted to China and it's people, crafts and arts. The illustrations originates from two young Chinese students who spent a few years studying in France supported by the French statesman Henri Leonard Bertin. He was then responsible for the East India company (1762-80) and supported the French Jesuits in China. Upon return to China the students produced more than 400 drawings of arts and crafts, of which many have been used in this work. The lovely plates mainly depict various artisans and vendors with their tools and products but several are devoted to costumes of emperors, ladies, lamas and soldiers. Some of the plates first appeared in Mason's "The costume of China" and "The Punishments of China" (1800-01). Cordier BS 64. Lipperheide 1524. Lwendahl 757.

XXI (of XXV reserved for collaborators) on this publication and signed by S. Delanuay on the colophon. (The first 25 copies in the series were accompanied by a supplementary suite of 7 signed lithographs). A gorgeous copy of this beautiful and rare work. Tristan Tzara (1896-1963) was the renowned Roman born writer and artist who was known for being one of the central figures of the anti-establishment Dada movement. His noted play "Le cur gaz" was first staged as part of the 1921 "Dada Salon" at the Galerie Montaigne in Paris. It was written as a parody of classical drama in the form of an absurd dialogue between characters named after human body parts; mouth, ear, eye, nose, neck and eyebrow (Tzara himself). The second stage production, also titled "Le Cur barbe" was performed at Thtre Michel in July 1923. Sonia Delaunay, the famous Ukrainian-born French artist, designed and costumed the production, creating bright coloured eccentric geometrically-shaped costumes of thick cardboard. The play has been viewed as the final event in the evolution of Dada as a cultural movement.
