Important work of the gold discoveries in Matabeleland and Mashionaland (Zimbabwe). Baines led an expedition in the 1860s to secure licences for a gold-mining company from King Lobengula. With one large folding map "Nautical map intended for the use of colonial undertakings" (with small tear at fold) and two engraved plates of Beaver's "Block House" on the island of Bulama. Contemporary calf, rebacked with original red title label, front hinge cracking, lower hinge loose. With some minor staining and a few leaves with dust-soiling. First edition. Beaver participated in this British mission aiming for a colonization of the island of Bulama near Sierra Leone. The expedition was badly executed and a failure. Beaver stayed on for 18 months to make settlement a success but many of the colonists died and the remaining abandoned the colony. The large map was orginally composed by C.B. Wadström, but here revised by Beaver. Gay 3196.

Bertrand was a Swiss geographer and photographer who made many ethnographical trips around the world. This account is about a journey to the Barotseland and the Zambezi basin, today located in western Zambia. Bertand's account based on his diary describes the different places he visited, its people, and hunting experiences of buffalo, wildebeest and lion. In our copy the second volume of part one (i:2) is bound between libros iii and iv of part one. The second part is printed by Giacomo Vincenti and the third by Gio. Battista Ussio. With engraved vignettes on title pages and four double page engraved maps of Europe, Asia, Africa and America. The map of Africa is strengthened at inner margins, with a hole, and faded in a few places. The map of America is browned (due to paper quality), with tear at fold and another small tear without any loss, frayed at outer margins. The other two maps are fine. Some old annotations and underlinings in ink in the first part. Some staining and age browning, more severe in places. Contemporary vellum, stained, with title in manuscript on spine. Bookplate. Early edition of Botero's famous work; a political and geographical description of different countries around the known world at the time. First published at Rome in 1591-93, reissued many times and translated into several languages. Giovanni Botero (1533-1617), Jesuit and Italian ecclesiastic, was secretary to Bishop Carlo Borromeo, and later to Archbishop Frederico Borromeo. First edition of this interesting work on Madeira and the Cape Verde Islands mainly devoted to geology, zoology and botany. Bowdich, born in 1791, participated in several voyages to Africa but died on this mission only 33 years old at Bathurst (Banjul) when he was about to undertake a trigonometric survey of the Gambia region.
