Barnum was 54 years old when he started to write his autobiography. It was published in 1854, and , according to Barnum, the sales reached nearly half a million copies. ... he used to boast that on every tour of the circus he sold 100,000 copies ... when people thronged out of the show they looked as though they were coming from a circulating library... Barnum was continually revising and adding to his book and from 1855 until 1891, when he died, seven different editions had appeared under the first and other titles. ... The bibliography of this book is extremely complex...': The Dutch translation here offered seems to focus on the life of Barnum, Jenny Lind and Tom Thumb, leaving out pages 161 - 302. Collation of our copy, however, complete, identical to the Hartmans copy.
