WAUGH, EVELYN, .
Labels.
0. 1930. A Mediterranenan Journal. London, Duckworth, 1930; 206 pp, [ + 1blank leaf ], with frontispiece from a drawing by the author, double-page route map, sketch map on one page of text, and three plates; publisher's blue cloth, illustrated dust-wrapper designed by Henry Lamb; ligh fading along top and bottom edges of boards and spine, a few tiny spots om rear endpapers; dust-wrapper price-clipped, a little darkened, minimally spotted, and a little rubbed at extremities, and chipped with loss at head of its spine, the loss extending to a maximum of about one inch from the top down one side of the spine and otherwise much smaller, losing half the letter "h" at the end of "Waugh";. A very good copy of the first impression of the first edition of a book extremely hard to find in fine condition or with a good dust-wrapper. The fading at the top of the spine corresponds to the obviously old chip in the dust-wrapper, which has since been protected with (unattached) transparent film and an (unattached) backing of old nearly-matching cream-coloured paper. Neither the film nor the backing paper are in any way attached to the wrapper or the book. A very desirable copy.

WILKES, WETENHALL,
A Letter of Genteel and Moral Advice
0. 1766. to a Young Lady: being a System of RULES and INFORMATIONS; digested into a new and familiar Method to qualify the FAIR SEX to be useful, and happy in every Scene of Life. The EIGHTH EDITION, carefully Revised, Corrected, and Enlarged by the AUTHOR. London, Printed for L.Hawes, C.Clarke, and R.Collins in Pater-Noster Row, 1766; [viii], 223pp. with engraved frontisp. (by Isaac Taylor); contemp. calf, raised bands with simple gilt rule and black leather lettering-piece, simple gilt rule to boards; top strip cut from half-title, about 40 pages lightly stained in the middle from flowers being pressed there - not preventing legibility, small hole in p.45/46 with loss of two letters. Scarce. The choice of this small book to press flowers in suggests it may have been the only book permitted in a young owner's pocket or bag on some afternoon's excursion centuries ago - or else that the content of the book was felt by her to be far heavier than its physical weight. Judging from its several editions Wilkes' views on female education and the role of women were widely circulated, but copies of his book are rare.

WILSON. T (SAMUEL CLARK),
The Little Marine Botanist;
0. or, Guide to the Collecting and Arranging of Sea-Weed. WITH:The Little Conchologist; an Introduction to the Classification of Shells. WITH: The Little Geologist or First Book of Geology. AND: The Little Mineralogist or First Book of Mineralogy. FOUR Volumes bound in one; approx. 9 cm x 6.5 cm.; 74, [vi], 70, 70, 72 pp. with 16 plates, (7 coloured or partly coloured, by hand); .contemporary half purple calf, red leather settering-piece; rebacked at an early stage, old spine and old lettering-piece mounted, spine dull, corners worn and scuffed; the binder has discarded the half-title to the second work. The author, Samuel Clarke (1810-1875), wrote a number of educational books for children, including also "The Little Entomologist", often using the pseudonym "the Rev. T. Wilson" and also as "Reuben Ramble" and as one of the many "Peter Parleys". These four works are all rare, although "The Little Conchologist" is listed at p.198 of the first volume of the Osborne Collection catalogue, and dated [1837]. The little boks we are offering here must have been a great encouragement to take up natural history, with their small, squarish format and the really charming plates, with several illustrations on each and some very delicate, and accurate hand-colouring. "The Little Marine Botanist" is printed on pink paper. The first and last of the works here bear the name Mary Alice Vallance on the title-page, the last giving her home as Brighton, and the first also bearing the name Mr G.A.Vallance. Despite the small format, one plate (uncolouredshows a pterodactyl, a palaeotherium, an iguanodon and other earlier forms of life. while others show fossils, sea-weed, rocks and shells, and one is a hand-coloured geological map of England and Wales.

There are a few neat marginal ink annotations of prices realised, and two very small, but delightful book-plates on the front paste-down, one in red morocco showing an owl and the Greek letters alpha and omega, the other, printed on paper and still miniature, with the name Beguin.

ZINZENDORFF, GRAF LUDWIG VON
Inhalt
0. 1743. [.. 3. Aufl. Flensburg & Altona, 1743; [viii], 342pp.; two volumes bound in one, early 19th. century marbled boards, black paper label with gilt lettering; worn, spine neatly repared at front hinge, vertical crease along centre of spine, edges worn, light brown stain running up to half the length of some outer margins, mostly in the first work, early ink entries, apparently prayers, on verso of final blank. The first work, dedicated to 'Ihro Majestaet, die Koenigin von Preussen' , lacks its title-page. After the Dedication, ending 'Ludwig von Z|inzendorff', and Foreword, dated 7th June 1738, from Marienborn, the contents begin under the general heading: 'Inhalt der Zwoelf Reden ueber das Gebet des Herrn'. These twelve sermons are followed on page147 by 'Der Inhalt noch zehen anderer Reden'. Thus the two volumes, together covering Zinzendorff's speeches in Berlin in early 1738, would appear to belong together and to have been issued together. This would make the first work also a third, or later, edition.
