SHAKESPEARE, WILLIAM,
The Plays
0. 1825. in Nine Volumes. EIGHT volumes only [of nine], London, William Pickering, Chancery Lane, 1825; approx. 3.1 ins x 1.7 ins; each volume c. 300 pp. with 33 copper-engraved plates, and a few wood-engraved circular vignettes; contemporary maroon morocco, spines panelled in gilt with raised bands, lettered in gilt with the titles of the plays within one of the panels. triple gilt rule to boards, all edges gilt; several plates slightly or marginally embrowned, a few more than the others, text clean; Volume I lacks general title (discarded by the binder); Volume III lacks the final leaf (the last two pages of "A Winter's Tale"), title-page of Vol.IX long ago mended with neat stitching; bindings a little rubbed at extremities, a little darkened, bottom corner of rear board of Volume III scratched; generally very attractive in its miniature morocco binding, though a little used, and internally clean, but missing Volume II as well as the one leaf of Volume III. Spielman 456. "The illustrated edition of the Pickering Shakespeare is rare in itself as only a small number of the sets was issued with the engraved frontispieces". He quotes Sheringham, writing in "The Connoisseur" [Nov. 1902]: "The plates of the Shakespeare in particular, 38 in number, were all lost, and the later copies of course are without them." The plates were engraved after Thomas Stothard - except for that of Puck, which is after Sir Joshua Reynolds' already celebrated painting.Since there are usually four plates in each of our volumes, we guess that our Volume IX, with only three plates, may be short of one plate.

STAEL-HOLSTEIN, A.L.G.NECKER, MME DE
Corinna
0. 1810. ossia L'Italia. Six volumes bound in three, Napoli, Angelo Trani, 1810; 6mo (c. 9 x 14 cm.); cont. half calf, spines gilt-ruled with ornament in blind, double red morocco labels; rubbed and worn, some headbands or tailbands a little chipped. An attractive set, each volume with the book-binder's ticket of Thomas Rigden of Dover [Ramsden, p. 140 (also half calf, gilt)], and the slightly later ownership entry on the title-pages "Frampton, Malta, 1828". 1810 was the notorious year in the author's life when her newly completed "De l'Allemagne", though passed by the Paris censor, was nevertheless seized and suppressed. This may possibly have have been the occasion for the Naples publisher to issue the romance "Corinne", which was first published in Italian in Firenze, in 1808.

SWIFT, JONATHAN, AND OTHERS,
The Examiners
0. for the Year 1711. To which is prefix'd A Letter to the Examiner. London .. for John Morphew .. and A.Dodd.. 1712; xvi, 306pp. [12 pp.] index, [2 pp.] adverts; 12mo; contemporary panelled calf, spine gilt in compartments with raised bands, red leather lettering-piece; binding used and worn, front hinge split but firmly held on the strings, splits in rear hinge, trace of older tape along inner margin of front paste-down, early name - "Edwart Jones, Bafonwen" at top of rear free endpaper. "The Examiner" included contributions by Swift, who took over the editorship. According to Hawkesworth, in Volume VII of his 1760 edition of Swift's Works, Swift's own contributions were Nos 13 - 44. This volume reprinted the periodical in a handy form for contemporary readers, and provides the modern reader with part of the context of Swift's papers. As the printer writes: "It is conceived, That altho' these Papers were writ for the Public Service, upon Incidents, as they daily happened; yet in them are treated several Subjects, which may be of general and lasting Use. Neither perhaps will Posterity be unwilling to see several Observations made, and Facts related, concerning the late Disposition of Affairs, which they will probably meet nowhere else ..".

. con le vere effigie de' Cesari ed altre illustrazioni dichiarate nella lettera dell'editore a' lettori. In Venezia appresso Francesco Piacentini. MDCCXXXVIII [1738], XIX, [1], 377, [3]pp.: Title page in black and red, with engraved title vignette. With added engraved title page in pictorial frame, with same motto as title vignette and title: "Gajo Suetonio Tranquillo Le vite de' dodici Cesari".Signed by J [ohn ] B[aptist] Jackson, 1738. With medallion portraits also by Jackson, tail-pieces, initials. With a dedication by F[rancesco] Priscianese, Vita di Gajo Suetonio Tranquillo" On pp. 367 - 369: "Nuova traduzione della giunta fatta a Suetonio da Giovanni Ludovico Vives. This work was originally published in Rome in 1544. Paolo Del Rosso, d. 1569. OCLC Number: 39805559/ 797830889. Signature in ink on reverse of title. Some slight browning to corners and inner margins of initial and rear few pages and very occasionally in the margins. In a dark brown new quarter morocco binding, spine with 5 raised bands and red title label, cloth covered boards, new end papers . John Baptist Jackson (1701-1754) trained as a wood engraver before traveling to Paris and, finally, to Venice where he became proficient in the chiaroscuro woodcut technique printed in several colours. He is noted chiefly for his major work comprising 24 chiaroscuro woodcuts after paintings by Venetian masters made from 1739 to 1743 and published in Venice in a bound volume in 1745, now considered one of the greatest examples of 18th-century print-making. When Jackson returned to London in 1745 he stopped producing his woodcuts and instead began to work in textile and wallpaper patterning. These efforts did not succeed and he issued a book in 1754 entitled An Essay on the Invention of Engraving and Printing in Chiaro Oscuro, but did not produce any further work .

TREVELYAN, HERBERT,,
Snatches from Oblivion. ,
0. 1827. Being the Remains of the Late Herbert Trevelyan Esq. edited by Piers Shafton Gent. London, Hurst, Chance & Co. 1827. xviii, 256pp. with engraved title-page and six plates; contemporary chocolate-coloured diced calf, spine richly gilt, gilt border to boards ("Wilson. 88 Royal Exchange"); the etched plates spotted and embrowned, one gathering (F5/pp. 105-108) detached but present; The "Introductory Sketch" has been misbound before the "Advertisement" and "List of Contents". A very rare collection of poems, stories, and sketches. We assume Plate I is the engraved title-page; Plate V is bound at the beginning as frontispiece. In checking the dates of the the artist, Robert Seymour, (1798-1836 ) we found that this work is attributed in Thieme/Becker's Lexicon of Artists to "Beck"; certainly the author's and ediitor's names appear to be a smokescreen. The binder's ticket on the front pastedown read "Wilson. 88 Royal Exchange. London. Books Maps &c. for exportation". Ramsden, "London Bookbinders" (1956) lists this [John] Wilson at page 151, taking Willson's second business address, from London Directories. In several ways a very rare book.
