MAUGHAM, WILLIAM SOMERSET, 1874 - 1965,
Typed Letter, a-5, Dated 23rd July 1952. Signed in Ink
. to Professor Jean Seznec, Oxford University. On note paper with the address Villa Mauresque. St. Jean - Cap Ferrat, A.M. He acknowledges receipt of Seznec's inaugural lecture.
¶ Maugham was born in Paris. He was noted as an expert storyteller and a master of fiction technique. An introverted child afflicted with a stammer, Maugham was orphaned at 10 and sent to live with his uncle, a vicar. Although he later studied medicine and completed his internship, he never practiced, having decided at an early age to devote himself to literature. He lived in grand style, spending much of his life on the French Riviera and traveling widely, particularly to East Asia and the South Pacific.

METIVIER, GEORGES,
Rimes Guernesiaises
0. par un Câtelain. Londres: Simpkin Marshall, Guernesey: E.Barbet, n.d. [c. 1840 - 1850]; [vi], 224 pp. with wood-engraved frontispiece and 14 wood-engraved pictorial head-or tail-pieces; binder's buckram, plainly lettered on the spine; the penultimate page is torn in the margins, with loss of two or three words. Georges Métivier [1790 - 1881], known as "The Guernsey Burns", drew heavily on traditiional and oral material for his poems in the Guernsey patois, but he lived much of his life in exile. In the preface to the edition of his "Rimes guernesiaises" which we are offering, the poet rails against an edition that had been published in Guernsey a few years previously under the same title in his absence, and without his editorial imput or supervision: "L'auteur des RIMES GUERNESIAISES n'habitait plus l'ile lorsque parut, il y a quelques années, un recueil sous ce titre, dans lequel se trouvait introduites plusieurs pièces qui lui sont entièrement inconnues, ces morceaux étant composés dans un patois désagréable, et très-différent du dialecte si expressif, nerveux et sonore, de la gogenarde vingtaine des Carités". Judging by the paper of our edition, and by the style of the wood-engraved illustrations, the book we are offering is from about 1840 - 50; it is therefore probable that the edition from which Métivier wished to disassociate himself, and the dialect and content of which he here corrects, is the 1831 edition usually associated with him and usually seen as having met his approval. A 32-page glossary is included in the pagination. The frontispiece, an illustration to the poem "Lamentations de Damaris", shows figures in front of an old house in Rue de la Fontaine, the street where Métivier was born.

Two parts in one volume] Frankfurt in Georg Muellers Verlag MDCLXIV [1664]; 12o (c. 5 x 11 cm.); [ii] [xviii], 766, [xviii] pp, with 44 copper-engraved plates, and engraved title-page to Part Two (the pagination is continuous); contemporary binding in dark pink velvet, with traces of a floral pattern, burnished endpapers, and two intricately-worked silver-plated clasps (complete and in full working order), gilt and gauffered edges; covers worn in places, with a few splits, very small brown stain with minute hole on p. 407/8; a very good, very well-preserved copy. A work very popular in its day, offering comfort but also instruction, or comfort usually in the form of instruction, and prayers, for women in whatever situations or tribulations they might experience in a very violent period of German history. It was obviously intended, and used, for devotion and meditation at home rather than in Church. In an informative blog for the University of Pennsylvania Dr Elisabeth Esser Braun, who had donated her copy of the 1708 edtion of this book to the university, refers also to a longer study by Ferdinand van Ingen, "Frauentugend und Tugendexempel . Zum Frauenspiegel des Hieronymus Ortelius und Philip von Zesens Biblischen Frauenportaets", in "Barocker Lust-Spiegel. Studien zur Literatur des Barock", (Amsterdam, 1984). We cannot ascertain whether our edition is the first to contain the additional poems by diverse authors, particularly Johannes Rist [known by some of his contemporaries as "Nordischer Apoll], but the title-page implies it is. The binding, with its 17th century-crafted silver-plated clasps and gauffered edges, is a delightful and uncommon survival. The engravings mostly show women of the Bible, whose lives and example inspire the separate chapters of the text.

OWEN, RODERIC,
The Golden Bubble.
0. 1957. Arabian Gulf Documentary. London, Collins, 1957; 255 pp. with frontispiece, map, and 8 photographic illustrations on four plates; publisher's cloth; lacking the dust-wrapper. A very good copy of the first edition, with signed inscription on the title page by the author: "To darling Mary, this Golden Bubble by with and from Roderick Owen, Years later - 1981". ["Mary" is Mary Stanley Smith, an Oxford friend of the author's, to whom he also refers cryptically in the text on page 90: "Mary and her house in Ship Street, and the characters to be encountered there". There is a pencil spelling correction in her hand to a word on page 172 and 194.] A personal account of a prolonged visit to the Persian Gulf in the second half of the Nineteen-Fifties, undertaken specifically to write the book. The places described include Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with accounts of encounters with many of the powerful, and of friendships, Arab and British. In Abu Dhabi he hunts with falcons as a guest of Sheikh Shakhbut. An interesting association copy of a rare book.

LA CURNE DE SAINTE-PALAYE
Memoires Sur L'ancienne Chevalerie
0. 1781. consideree comme un etablissement politique et militaire. Nouvelle edition, augmentee d'un volume. Three volumes, Paris, 1781; xii, 391, 320, xvi, 456pp.; cont. light green paper-covered boards, spines simply decorated with gilt rules and bay-leaves, gilt meander rule to boards, yellow silk markers; spines faded & rubbed at head and tail, with loss of green paper, extremities also rubbed, including corners (mostly just the tips), small typographical bookplates of Otto A. Hirth, very small 19th. C. oval lib. stamp at foot of title-pages. A key study of the subject which influenced generation upon generation of antiquaries, scholars, and poets, augmented in this edition, including a long essay (c.250pp.) "Memoires historiques sur la Chasse".Some passages in this particular set have been whitened with chalk, making them a little harder to read but not illegible; we could have had these chalk marks removed but, we surmise that they may have been made in preparing a new edition of the work, and did not wish to detract from its historical and bibliographical value. This work is widely celebrated, and features in major exhibitions on German illustration of the period, including "Die Kunst der Illustration", Wolfenbuettel, 1986-7, No. 24 (p.59 of the catalogue). PILKINGTON, M.,
A Dictionary of Painters
0. 1805. from the Revival of the Art to the Present Period. A New Edition, with Considerable Alterations, Additions, an Appendix, and an Index, by Henry Fuseli, R.A. London, 1805; 4to; xx, [ii],, 694, [xx] pp.; contemporary half calf, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco lettering piece, marbled boards; corners rubbed, spine and front hinge a little rubbed, a few preliminary pages bound in the wrong order but complete; a good and handsome copy. Pilkington dedicated the original edition of his Dictionary to the President and Council of the Royal Academy. This is the first edition of Fuseli's edition, containing many new biographical articles, and a short additional Preface. Fuseli revised and expanded this 1805 edition in a new edition five years later. The editorship and additions by Fuseli, a leading exponent of English, or rather of European Romantic painting, as well as a scholar of Fine Art, make this an invaluable work.
