CLERK, THOMAS,
The Works of William Hogarth
0. 1821. (Including "The Analysis of Beauty"), elucidated by Descriptions Critical, Moral, and Historical .. to which is prefixed Some Account of his Life. Two volumes, London, R.Scholey, 1821; vi, [vi], 203, [iv], 96pp. + " The Analysis of Beauty" with unnumbered pages, with title-page vignettes and 86 plates; nineteenth-century half deep blue morocco over blue marbled boards, blue marbled endpapers, rebacked with matching buckram; slight rubbing to extremities of the boards and one or two small chips, marginal loss to Plate IX, but a well-bound set, professionally repaired, the contents clean. One of several handbooks to the engraved versions of Hogarth's paintings which appeared after his lifetime. Plates 54 and 55 have not been bound in, and the letterpress for "Before and After" implies they may have been deliberately omitted; there is no plate 84, but this is probably not called for, as the letterpress at this point directs the reader to the title-page vignette for the illustration; the numeration of the plates is eccentric, with plates one would expect in the first volume bound [correctly] in the second, but the plates are otherwise complete. The pages of "The Analysis of Beauty" are unnumbered, but page numbers are given in the margins of the text. apparently referring to the pagination of the first edition. This is a very interesting association copy. The front paste-down of each volume bears a decorative bookplate by Provost Blondel (Paris) of a flowery wreath with interwined initials we have not deciphered and the motto "Jamais Cesder". Inscriptions on the bookplates show that the book once belonged to the English author W.Somerset Maugham, and that he gave it as a present to the American writer Glenway Wescott. Wescott, a friend of Katherine Anne Porter and Thornton Wilder as well as of Maugham, was a widely read and admired novelist in the first half of the twentieth century, and lived in Paris for much of his life. He presented this set to the art historian Edgar Wind, who had fled Germany and had posts in the United States in the 1940s (he later became the first Professor of the History of Art at Oxford.) The inscriptions, all written in ink in the margins of the ex-libris, read: "Edgar Wind ex dono Glenway Wescott ex dono W.Somerset Maugham" and "with G.W.'s affection to E.W. - and thanks for his analyses of the spring of 1942 -".

CRUIKSHANK , GEORGE (ILLUSTRATOR)
The Comic Almanac.
0. An Ephemeris in Jest and Earnest. A COMPLETE SET, comprising 19 volumes, all first editions, and in the ORIGINAL WRAPPERS or original flexible cloth, London, Tilt & Bogue [later David Bogue], 1835 - 1853. Over the 19 years of its publication, the Comic Almanac, enjoyed various editors, including the pseudonymous "Rigdum Funnidos", Henry Mayhew, and Robert B. Brough, and experienced a reduction in format from octavo to duodecimo in the years 1848 and 1849. The stiff paper wrappers with designs by Cruikshank finally gave way in 1850 to stiff gilt-decorated cloth-covered wrappers. What never changed was the inclusion of twelve etched plates by George Cruikshank in each issue, as well as black-and-white illustrations in the text by various hands. Larger folding frontispieces, also by Cruikshank, etched and finely coloured by hand, were added from the year 1850. The etchings for "The Comic Almanac" reflect his close observation of Victorian society and those for the earlier issues are considered some of his best work. The spines of the first seven volumes are worn, with a little loss, particularly at head and foot, though the lettering is largely present; the rear wrapper of the 1840 volume is loose; the next six volumes have been very neatly, professionally rebacked using old material, either paper or fine-grained cloth, and match the plain spines of the last volumes' original cloth. There are two or three contemporary ownership entries, and a few pencil entries for 1843. The contents are in good condition, though there is slight spotting and browning to the edges of the plates from 1843 to 1847. It is very rarely that a complete series in the original ephemeral bindings is offered.

DALZIELL [ED.],
A Round of Days
0. 1866. Described in Original Poems by some of Our Most Celebrated Poets and in Pictures by Eminent Artists engraved by the Brothers Dalziell. London, George Routledge and Sons, 1866; 4to; [xii], 93 numbered leaves, printed on rectos only, with wood-engraved illustrations on nearly every leaf, [ii]pp.; publisher's richly-decorated cloth, spine gilt to an Arabesque design, boards richly gilt with red and blue paper onlays, a.e.g.; skillfully sewn and recased, with new endpapers, short split at head of spine, corners worn with splits, light, mainly marginal foxing (heavier to prelims and title-page), spots to a few pages affecting the image, marginal finger-mark on page 60, early inscription on original yellow front endpaper. Scarce, and would be virtually unobtainable unfoxed and tight in its original binding as issued. Nevertheless a classic, and a high-point in Victorian book illustration and book production. FIELDING, HENRY (AND OTHERS)
Examples of the Interposition of Providence
. in the Detection and Punishment of Murder .. with an Introduction and Conclusion both written by Henry Fielding Esq. London, for A. Millar, 1752; 12mo (c. 12.5 x 7.5}; iv, 94pp.; publisher's original unlettered sheep; joints worn, head of spine chipped. Very good copy. The work was intended to reduce and preempt the crime of murder by demonstrating that guilt can't be kept secret and that through the workings of Providence truth will out and guilt be revealed. It draws on various sources, including Nathaniel Wanley's "Wonders of the Little World" (1677), Thomas Beard's "The Theatre of God's Judgments" (1597), and John Reynolds' "The Triumph of God's Revenge..".(1635). and the compression of the narratives, though thought to have been presided over by Henry Fielding, may be by Sarah Fielding or William Young, Henry Fielding's authorship being confined as the title-page states to the introduction and conclusion. The litle work or compendium was priced at "Bound one Shilling, or Ten Shillings a Dozen to those who give them away". It is now very rare.

QUARLES FRANCIS ( 1592 1644 )
Emblems Divine and Moral: Together with Hieroglyphics of the Life of Man
. London: Printed and sold by H. Trapp, 1777. rebound in half brown calf and green cloth covered boards with leather corners, gilt-lettered spine, 5 raised bands, spine extremities, bookplate on front paste-down, pictorial clipping pasted to verso of first preliminary, frontispiece consists of 2 images on 2 pages, a fine copy. 12mo. [xii] 9-289 , plates not included in the pagination. Profusely illustrated with wood cuts, Signature in ink by [previous owner dated 1791 in ink on original preserved first end paper, she also added some notes of rear end paper. Francis Quarles , English poet descended from an old Essex family, and educated first at Cambridge and then at Oxford. Upon completing those studies he went to Lincoln Inn to study and practice law.Though not an ardent royalist, he wrote pamphlets during the Commonwealth upholding the divine right of kings. In the 1630's he went back to Essex and began work on what was to become his best-known and most popular work "his best-selling Emblems (1635), lavishly-illustrated and containing five books of meditative verse. The poems are introduced by a scriptural motto, then a commentary based on quotations from various sources, and at the end closure is achieved with a short didactic epigram. The visual impact is supplied by the centre-piece, the emblem itself. Quarles says that "an emblem is but a short parable," and the verse puts the visual into the mental. The words and pictures, complementing each other, may then be said to have a double impact upon the reader.

GEIGER, BENNO,
Alessandro Magnasco.
0. 1914. Berlin, Paul Cassirer, 1914. small folio; xxiv, 76 plates [with 77 illustrations], each preceded by a page of caption; publisher's printed wrappers; a few spots to edges, otherwise a very good copy. Apparently the first attempt ever to unite the scattered oeuvre of this Italian baroque master, reprinting Ratti's LIfe of Magnasco [in Italian] in the prefatory material.
