With medallion portraits also by Jackson, tail-pieces, initials. With a dedication by F[rancesco] Priscianese, Vita di Gajo Suetonio Tranquillo" On pp. 367 - 369: "Nuova traduzione della giunta fatta a Suetonio da Giovanni Ludovico Vives. Some slight browning to corners and inner margins of initial and rear few pages and very occasionally in the margins. In a dark brown new quarter morocco binding, spine with 5 raised bands and red title label, cloth covered boards, new end papers . John Baptist Jackson (1701-1754) trained as a wood engraver before traveling to Paris and, finally, to Venice where he became proficient in the chiaroscuro woodcut technique printed in several colours. He is noted chiefly for his major work comprising 24 chiaroscuro woodcuts after paintings by Venetian masters made from 1739 to 1743 and published in Venice in a bound volume in 1745, now considered one of the greatest examples of 18th-century print-making. When Jackson returned to London in 1745 he stopped producing his woodcuts and instead began to work in textile and wallpaper patterning. These efforts did not succeed and he issued a book in 1754 entitled An Essay on the Invention of Engraving and Printing in Chiaro Oscuro, but did not produce any further work .

TREVELYAN, HERBERT,,
Snatches from Oblivion. ,
0. 1827. Being the Remains of the Late Herbert Trevelyan Esq. edited by Piers Shafton Gent. London, Hurst, Chance & Co. 1827. xviii, 256pp. with engraved title-page and six plates; contemporary chocolate-coloured diced calf, spine richly gilt, gilt border to boards ("Wilson. 88 Royal Exchange"); the etched plates spotted and embrowned, one gathering (F5/pp. 105-108) detached but present; The "Introductory Sketch" has been misbound before the "Advertisement" and "List of Contents". A very rare collection of poems, stories, and sketches. We assume Plate I is the engraved title-page; Plate V is bound at the beginning as frontispiece. In checking the dates of the the artist, Robert Seymour, (1798-1836 ) we found that this work is attributed in Thieme/Becker's Lexicon of Artists to "Beck"; certainly the author's and ediitor's names appear to be a smokescreen. The binder's ticket on the front pastedown read "Wilson. 88 Royal Exchange. London. Books Maps &c. for exportation". Ramsden, "London Bookbinders" (1956) lists this [John] Wilson at page 151, taking Willson's second business address, from London Directories. In several ways a very rare book.

VIVAR, JERONIMO DE(B.1524/1525)
Cronica Y Relacion Copiosa Y Verdadera de Los Reynos de Chile.
. [Manuscript attributed to Juan de Cardenas y Criada, secretary of General Pedro de Valdivia]. Facsimile reproduction of original 18th century manuscript in the Newberry Library,Chicago, with a modern transcription by Irving Albert Leonard and Guillermo Feliu Cruz. Vol. 2 [all published]. SANTIAGO DE CHILE : Fondo Historico y Bibliografico Jose Toribio Medina, 1966, Facsimile with the transcription on facing pages. Folio; 4 p. l. 232pp. {original texts and the transcription pages have the same page numbers ). 16 b/w plates lettered A-P, 2 colour plates 39cm. 1 v. ill. : coat of arms, facsims. maps, col. plates, ports. wrappers. WALCH, J.G.
Einleitung in Die Philosophie. 2 Volumes.
. Einleitung in die Philosophie or Introduction to Philosophy was intended by Walch to be a companion to the earlier Lexicon, as the full title suggests: Introduction to Philosophy, Which Explains All Its Parts, Indicates their Proper Connections, and Gives an Account of the Origin and History of Each Discipline, Especially for Use with the Philosophical Lexicon. Divided into three parts, the Einleitung contains extensive historical introductions to philosophical disciplines throughout the ages. The first part examines the "Character of Philosophical Cognition". The second deals with the "Disciplines" of philosophy, namely logic, metaphysics, natural philosophy, ethics, doctrine of virtue, philosophy of law, and political philosophy, and the third concerns "Philosophical Secrets" or the teaching on the mind (Geist) or souls. Much of Walch's philosophy is reminscent of Kant and some philosophers have argued that he should be counted as one of Kant's predecessors. This reprint will provide academics with important evidence to analyse this issue and the opportunity to fully understand the relationship between the two strands of the German Enlightenment, initiated by its two "founders", Christian Thomasius and Christian Wolff. First published in 1727, this reprint is of the rare third improved edition (1738) which contains an extensive index. Now reprinted in two volumes, with an introduction by Manfred Kuehn, this valuable work provides a succinct and systematic account of philosophy. 2001, 818pp. Fine hardback set. No dustwrapper as issued. Mint condition still shrink-wrapped.

WAUGH, EVELYN, .
Labels.
0. 1930. A Mediterranenan Journal. London, Duckworth, 1930; 206 pp, [ + 1blank leaf ], with frontispiece from a drawing by the author, double-page route map, sketch map on one page of text, and three plates; publisher's blue cloth, illustrated dust-wrapper designed by Henry Lamb; ligh fading along top and bottom edges of boards and spine, a few tiny spots om rear endpapers; dust-wrapper price-clipped, a little darkened, minimally spotted, and a little rubbed at extremities, and chipped with loss at head of its spine, the loss extending to a maximum of about one inch from the top down one side of the spine and otherwise much smaller, losing half the letter "h" at the end of "Waugh";. A very good copy of the first impression of the first edition of a book extremely hard to find in fine condition or with a good dust-wrapper. The fading at the top of the spine corresponds to the obviously old chip in the dust-wrapper, which has since been protected with (unattached) transparent film and an (unattached) backing of old nearly-matching cream-coloured paper. Neither the film nor the backing paper are in any way attached to the wrapper or the book. A very desirable copy.

WESSELS, DICK
Een 1/2 Tuinhuis.
. Met illustraties van Dick Wessels. Maastricht, Het gonst, 1989, one of 55 copies, signed by Wessels.
