SUGDEN, VICTOR (COMP. AND ED.)
An Oxford Diary.
. 2009, 437pp. in glossy wrappers bearing armorial coloured images of Oxford and its university.
¶ A collection of over 6,000 dated events from the rich history of Oxford, researched from documents, diaries, contemporary newspapers, reference books, tombstones, foundation stones, etc. starting in the year 634 (Berinus) Events important and trivial, grave and gay, concerning Town and Gown, Church and State, people, places and politics, weather and transport, sports, games and pastimes, cinemas and theatres. Events that have moulded the history of Oxford and in many instances have influenced the world. An Oxford Diary was complied by Victor Sugden over several years and produced as an A4 300+ page loose leaf document. He gave it to the Oxford City Library because the cost of short run printing at the time was prohibitive. By 2009 there were companies setup that could produce and print any text only book at extremely reasonable cost in a few days. The document was converted into digital form by Brian Leahy who scanned the pages in OCR (Optical Character Recognition), made the necessary corrections (OCR notoriously produces random inaccurate scans), and then set the digital document in Microsoft Word for printing production. Maurice Baker designed the cover and produced the prelims before submitting the book for production The result has produced a 15.5x23cm size book of 437 pages. Set in Times New Roman at The Eyrie Press, Leatherhead. - - Victor Sugden was born in 1925 in Nice France where his father was a photographer working on cruise liners. The family returned to England when he was six months old and lived in Llanberis at the foot of Snowden for four years until they moved to Liss in Hampshire. He trained as an electrician before war service in Burma for five years. After military service he worked at the Oxford University Press for 36 years as a reader and examinations officer. He was also editor of the Clarendonian (works magazine). He took partial retirement to work at the University Examination Schools as Administrator and died in 1998.
