TOLKIEN
The Hobbit Calendar 2006
. Following the success of the Lord of the Rings 50th Anniversary Calendar, this year’s calendar features paintings by J.R.R. Tolkien himself from the beloved children’s classic, The Hobbit. The Tolkien calendar for 2006 continues in a popular tradition, building on the success of The Lord of the Rings 50th anniversary calendar, presenting art that has not appeared in calendar form for 30 years. This year’s calendar features 15 paintings and illustrations by J.R.R. Tolkien himself, which were drawn by Tolkien when writing his beloved children’s classic, The Hobbit. They provide a fascinating insight into how Tolkien imagined the world of Middle-earth would look. The images are accompanied by informative text which explains how they relate to the story and offers information on their content and history. Also included, by way of a poster, are the two colour maps that the author produced to illustrated Bilbo’s travels: the first of Thror’s Map, showing the location of the Lonely Mountain, the Dwarven treasure and the large dragon that guarded it; and the second of Wilderland, the strange realms that lie over the Misty Mountains into the West. excellent copy in shrink wrap.

TOLKIEN
Tolkien Calendar 1990
. illustrated by Ted Nasmith.Out of all the esteemed artists who have created images of J.R.R. Tolkien's work, Ted Nasmith is probably in the top five somewhere. Heck, he'd probably be higher on the list if it weren't for John Howe and Alan Lee, because his paintings of Middle Earth are lushly detailed, and rich with light and colour. And the "Tolkien Calendar 2009" has some of his lovelier pictures that were created for the illustrated "Silmarillion," full of ice and fire, light and shadow, and loads of orcs, Elves and ancient humans. The cover obviously is a gorgeous picture of the Elves' white ships from Valinor, sailing into the bay of a white-and-gold city against a mountain. I don't know if that's supposed to be Valinor or not, but the whites and golds against the stone and grass is truly striking. without slip case. . Graz: Akadem Druck- u. Verlagsanstalt, 1979. 2 volumes in slip case. Graz 1979. Complete colour facsimile edition of the 26 pages (13 fol.) of the Musterbuch in original size (241 x 158 mm). All folios are cut according to the original. The facsimile volume in the same format as the original. the commentary volume 54 text pages (in German) and 8 plates in colour and b/w, A fine set . The Musterbuch dates from the 1st half of the 13th century,
¶ Generations of medieval artists patterned their great works on cartoons and sketches compiled in so-called Model Books. The Model Book of Rein, named after the Cistercian abbey at Rein near Graz in Styria where it was made, is probably the finest of all. The first medieval Model Book this is the work of an anonymous artist who, on 13 pages, carefully illustrated scenes of everyday life, created animal depictions, a series of initial alphabets, as well as patterns for floor tiles and glass windows. The codex was produced in the 13th century and the copy in Rein thus constitutes the oldest surviving Model Book of this size in medieval art. The Model Book commences with 12 scenes taken from medieval daily life. The precisely executed genre pictures represent typical farm duties, different arts and crafts, as well as hunting and fishing scenes and activities of monastic life. These pictures are followed by three different alphabets, ranging from a simple majuscule alphabet to a lavishly illustrated initial alphabet including animals skilfully hidden in the expressive interlace. The books continues with 48 real and fabulous creatures, plants, and stones. Especially the birds deserve particular mention due to their complicated posture and movements and it is assumed that they could have been destined for use in initials. The same applies to the sketches showing multi-lobed, scroll-like leaves enclosing ensembles of flowers and fruit. The Model Book ends with sumptuous ornaments designed for use in floor tiles and glass windows with interlace modelled in the style of Greek mosaics. ( CODICES SELECTI, Vol. LXIV). VEHMEYER, H.M.,
Clocks: Their Origin and Development 1320-1880. 2 Volumes.
. Wilsele, Belgium, 1st. edition, 2004, 1032 pages and about 950 colour illustrations. bibliography, index; .small-folio sized, immaculate new set in box and still in shrink wraps.( 25 x 33.1 cm )
¶ A completely rewritten and vastly expanded version of an earlier publication in Dutch (Vehmeyer, Antieke Uurwerken - Een familienverzameling, 1994, 624 pages ) this work is therefore vastly more accessible to most collectors. It is basically a detailed history of the mechanical clock in Europe, illustrated primarily with examples from the extraordinary collection of the author's family. The 1994 edition showed 233 clocks in detail; the 2004 edition has grown to 330 clocks so shown. Therefore, the book is also a massive collection catalogue. Each clock in the family collection is catalogued on two (or more) large (13x10 inches) pages, with about half a page of text describing maker, dial, movement and case, half a page of colour photos of details, and a large, full page colour picture of the clock facing the initial page. The clocks are arranged by country (52 from Germany, 109 from the Netherlands, 94 from England, 83 from France. ). Within each country, they are in chronological order. Part I comprises a comprehensive introduction to the origins of clockmaking, while Part II presents a comparative horological history of the leading European clockmaking countries: Germany, England, France, Italy and last but not least, the Netherlands. The book has a lot more to offer than just historical and technical facts about clocks. On the basis of the Vehemeyer family collection of more than 350 clocks, which are illustrated at the end of each relevant chapter, it gives insight into the relative importance of each country and the mutual influence these countries exerted on each other. Owing to its large number of beautifully produced photographs of both the exterior and very often also the interior of the various artefacts, as well as the explanatory accompanying texts, which follow a set pattern, this book will prove to be of interest to both laymen and specialist alike. 9053494316 / ISBN-13: 978-9053494318. VIBOLT KNUDSEN, VIBEKE ,
William Hogarth: En Skøges Liv Og Andre Historier a Harlot's Progress and Other Stories. Exhibition Catalogue.
. Copenhagen, Aage og Johanne Louis-Hansens Fond, 2016, 94pp. lge4to, paper, profusely illustrated in black and white, Foreword by Mikkel Bogh, the museum's director. Bi-lingual texts Danish-English. A young girl arrives from London to London to find work. But instead she ends up as a prostitute and her life goes downhill with both prison and sexually transmitted diseases. With the exhibition William Hogarth. A fool's life and other stories ( Statens Museum for Kunst, April 14 - August 7, 2016), the SMK turns back to the 18th century Great Britain in London. The exhibition presents the British visual historian William Hogarth (1697-1764) who invented a new form of narrative image series with satirical and moral pointers. His critical works were unique in his contemporary and focused on many of the current subjects: Prostitution, poverty, violence, pressure, deception, self-determination and desires. In particular, three series are central to Hogarth's work: The life of a fool (1732), A libertine's life (1735) and A modern marriage (1745), all describing a protagonist striving to rise in the hierarchy of class, but on the way, losing himself in wild exudates and directs directly to self-destruction and death. Stories of modern life. In his autobiographical notes Hogarth talks that his images are scenes and characters actors performing a stupid game. His stories gained great success, both among the lower classes and of the elite of society. Hogarth insisted that an image should maintain the attention of the viewer by entertaining and pleasing the eye, thus letting an object's gravity sink as the story progresses to a tragic climax. Hogarth's art is in all ways closely linked to the big city of London and the life of the city. Around 1700, the city's population grew to approx. 600,000, making it Europe's largest city. He made daily observations of the chaotic crowd of the city, of all forms of life that unfolded in the city and in the houses; In particular, he had a well-developed look for the contrasts between the social teams and their clashes. Udgivet i forbindelse med udstillingen af samme navn, Den Kgl. Kobberstiksamling, Statens Museum for Kunst, 14. april - 7. aug. 2016.
