Throughout the 1960's, Elizabeth was one of the most popular poets in England. She never married and published a great number of works. Elizabeth once said, "I write fast and revise very little. A street in North Oxford has now been named after. We are certain she would not have approved. THIS IS ONE OF THE FEW COPIES THE AUTHOR SIGNED, IT IS MARKED D . She only signed 6 copies of the 38 specials. [ Dr - M - 2 ].

This copy is made particularly interesting by a contemporary full-page manuscript ex-libris in black, red, yellow, and silver with a full-page armorial crest and the name "Johan Tobing her Leonardes Son" painted directly on to the front paste-down. The name of a much later English owner is written neatly in small letters above, in the top margin. The ornaments are those used by Henry Woodfall. Illustrated with numerous engravings and diagrams. Keill, John 1671-1721, mathematician and astronomer, was born in Edinburgh.. He was the deputy to Dr. Millington, Sedleian professor at Oxford, and seems to have joined Christ Church (ib. ii. 26). His lectures were from the first highly successful. They were printed in 1701 under the title "Introductio ad Veram Physicam " and became well known on the continent. Halley is said to have pointed out numerous errors in the first edition, but in a friendly manner. (ib. i. 90). The book was first published in Latin in 1701 Two additional lectures and many corrections were introduced into the second edition, published at Oxford in 1705. Other editions appeared in London in 1715, and at Cambridge in 1741. In a translation into English, published in 1736, Maupertuis, who suggested the venture, appended his theory of the ring of the planet Saturn. The "Introductio" was considered Keill"s "best performance" and it was generally welcomed as an excellent introduction to the "Principia" of Newton He was much Newton's client in the priority dispute with Leibniz. One of few Newton supporters with High Church patronage he was crucial in fighting Cartesianism and mechanical thinking, stating natural theology should be subordinated to the Scripture. His lectures were well regarded with the first translation into English. In a new polished cloth binding with the central leather panel of trhe original binding preserved and recessed in the front board (see image).

METIVIER, GEORGES,
Rimes Guernesiaises
0. par un Câtelain. Londres: Simpkin Marshall, Guernesey: E.Barbet, n.d. [c. 1840 - 1850]; [vi], 224 pp. with wood-engraved frontispiece and 14 wood-engraved pictorial head-or tail-pieces; binder's buckram, plainly lettered on the spine; the penultimate page is torn in the margins, with loss of two or three words. Georges Métivier [1790 - 1881], known as "The Guernsey Burns", drew heavily on traditiional and oral material for his poems in the Guernsey patois, but he lived much of his life in exile. In the preface to the edition of his "Rimes guernesiaises" which we are offering, the poet rails against an edition that had been published in Guernsey a few years previously under the same title in his absence, and without his editorial imput or supervision: "L'auteur des RIMES GUERNESIAISES n'habitait plus l'ile lorsque parut, il y a quelques années, un recueil sous ce titre, dans lequel se trouvait introduites plusieurs pièces qui lui sont entièrement inconnues, ces morceaux étant composés dans un patois désagréable, et très-différent du dialecte si expressif, nerveux et sonore, de la gogenarde vingtaine des Carités". Judging by the paper of our edition, and by the style of the wood-engraved illustrations, the book we are offering is from about 1840 - 50; it is therefore probable that the edition from which Métivier wished to disassociate himself, and the dialect and content of which he here corrects, is the 1831 edition usually associated with him and usually seen as having met his approval. A 32-page glossary is included in the pagination. The frontispiece, an illustration to the poem "Lamentations de Damaris", shows figures in front of an old house in Rue de la Fontaine, the street where Métivier was born.

NEUDA, FANNY [ GEB. SCHMIEDL ]
Stunden Der Andacht. Ein Gebet- Und Erbauungsbuch Für Israels Frauen Und Jungfrauen, Zur öffentlichen Und Häuslichen Andacht, So Wie Für Alle Verhältnisse Des Weiblichen Lebens.
. Prague, Brandeis, n.d. 26th edition , VIII, 176pp. Fanny Schmiedl Neuda (1819-1894).published the first Jewish women¿s prayer book to be written 'by a woman in 1855. In addition to containing formal Jewish worship practices, this work covered both public and private events in the life of a Jewish woman. Fanny Neuda (née Schmiedl, b. March 6, 1819 - d. April 6, 1894) was a Jewish writer best known for her popular collection of prayers, Stunden Der Andacht (1855). She was born in Lomnice (Lobnig), Moravia to the family of Rabbi Yehudah Schmiedl (1776-1855, present-day Czech Republic). After marrying Abraham Neuda (1812-1854), she moved to Loštice, where her husband served as rabbi. After Abraham Neuda's death in 1854, her book of prayers became widely published. She died at the age of 75 years in the spa town of Merano (present-day Italy). In 2015, a plaque honouring her was unveiled in Loshtice. Neuda's collection of Jewish prayers is unique by virtue of its being the first collection of Jewish prayers composed in German by a Jewish woman. Earlier collections of te?innot - petitionary prayers, comprising a growing literature of devotional works for prayer outside of the shul had been authored by Jewish men and less commonly by Jewish women. (See the prayer of Glückel of Hameln (1646-1724) translated by Kaeren Fish in A Jewish Women's Prayer Book (e.d. Aliza Lavie 2008)). After Neuda's work was published in 1855, it attained such great popularity among Jewish women in Central Europe, that it was published in more than 30 editions (some of which were illustrated).1. At least one siddur published by Raphael Jacob Fürstenthal in 1897 appended her complete Stunden Der Andacht to it.
