CARR, J[AMES] L[OYD]
The First Saturday in May; an Echo of a Shropshire Lad
. The Tern Press, Shropshire, 1993. Hardcover. First book Edition, limited to 140 numbered copies printed on Lana paper and signed by the publishers, Nicholas and Mary Parry. Landscape small8vo. Unpaginated. Decorated boards. Illustrated with eight black and white wood engravings from drawings and photographs taken at various villages on the first Saturday in May, 1993,by Nicholas Parry. In fine state. No dust wrapper, as issued. A delightful account of the first village cricket match of the 1936 season and the train journey to and from the game. Carr's story was first printed in the cricketing anthology 'Fine Glances', issued three years previously. White and green pictorial paper over boards. Title in red on front cover and spine. outer edge untrimmed. Textured green end papers A charming book on cricket. delightful little story by J.L Carr recalling a match he played at Bridgenorth in Worcestershire in 1936. Strangely, this attractive item is not widely known. Byron Rogers wrote a highly acclaimed biography of JL Carr , but the First Saturday in May is not shown in the list of books written by Carr. It also escaped the attention of Stephen Gibbs in Post Padwick. J.L. Carr. 1912-1994, was one of the great polymaths of the twentieth century, putting his hand to teaching, travelling, novels, and social history, and even serving a stint as a photographer for the R.A.F. Famed for his eccentricity, he went through six publishers, one for each novel he wrote, until he formed his own Quince Tree Press. This is a beautiful and wistful account of a half-remembered pre-war cricket match: 'At least two of us would die in fixtures even then tentatively arranged for our generation." 1993 . Loosely inseted is a handwritten letter by Mary Parry dated 11-9-2004.

CLERK, THOMAS,
The Works of William Hogarth
0. 1821. (Including "The Analysis of Beauty"), elucidated by Descriptions Critical, Moral, and Historical .. to which is prefixed Some Account of his Life. Two volumes, London, R.Scholey, 1821; vi, [vi], 203, [iv], 96pp. + " The Analysis of Beauty" with unnumbered pages, with title-page vignettes and 86 plates; nineteenth-century half deep blue morocco over blue marbled boards, blue marbled endpapers, rebacked with matching buckram; slight rubbing to extremities of the boards and one or two small chips, marginal loss to Plate IX, but a well-bound set, professionally repaired, the contents clean. One of several handbooks to the engraved versions of Hogarth's paintings which appeared after his lifetime. Plates 54 and 55 have not been bound in, and the letterpress for "Before and After" implies they may have been deliberately omitted; there is no plate 84, but this is probably not called for, as the letterpress at this point directs the reader to the title-page vignette for the illustration; the numeration of the plates is eccentric, with plates one would expect in the first volume bound [correctly] in the second, but the plates are otherwise complete. The pages of "The Analysis of Beauty" are unnumbered, but page numbers are given in the margins of the text. apparently referring to the pagination of the first edition. This is a very interesting association copy. The front paste-down of each volume bears a decorative bookplate by Provost Blondel (Paris) of a flowery wreath with interwined initials we have not deciphered and the motto "Jamais Cesder". Inscriptions on the bookplates show that the book once belonged to the English author W.Somerset Maugham, and that he gave it as a present to the American writer Glenway Wescott. Wescott, a friend of Katherine Anne Porter and Thornton Wilder as well as of Maugham, was a widely read and admired novelist in the first half of the twentieth century, and lived in Paris for much of his life. He presented this set to the art historian Edgar Wind, who had fled Germany and had posts in the United States in the 1940s (he later became the first Professor of the History of Art at Oxford.) The inscriptions, all written in ink in the margins of the ex-libris, read: "Edgar Wind ex dono Glenway Wescott ex dono W.Somerset Maugham" and "with G.W.'s affection to E.W. - and thanks for his analyses of the spring of 1942 -".

CROSS, A.G.,
The Russian Theme in English Literature. From
. the Sixteenth Century to 1980. An Introductory Survey and a Bibliography, CONTENTS: Introduction / Chronological Index / Author Index / Short Title Index / Subject Index Both the introductory essay and the new bibliography break completely new ground in the study of Anglo-Russian literary relations. The long introductory essay (of about 22,000 words) attempts to survey Russian themes in original English imaginative writing (poetry, plays, novels) from Elizabethan times up to the present day against the background of general de4velopments in Anglo-Russian relations. It reveals the persistent interest in Russia over more than four centuries by a host of writers, both major and log-since forgotten, and introduces little known works in all genres which provide an interesting insight into English attitudes and prejudices. The bibliography lists nearly 1100 works and is divided into four sections. The first and central part is the chronological listing, arranged according to the publication date of the first British edition. Full details of American editions are given only when no British edition subsequently appeared, although indications of prior publication in the U.S.A. and of any differences in title are provided in the annotation. The second listing is an alphabetical index of authors. Numbers locate the works by the individual authors in the chronological index. Finally, there is a Subject Index, which performs the function of allowing researchers to identify works in the first Index that refer to such broad areas as 'Peter the Great', '1812', 'the Crimean War', 'Nihilists', 'the October revolution'. Oxford, 1985; 278pp. bound in d/j, illustrated fine copy.

CRUIKSHANK , GEORGE (ILLUSTRATOR)
The Comic Almanac.
0. An Ephemeris in Jest and Earnest. A COMPLETE SET, comprising 19 volumes, all first editions, and in the ORIGINAL WRAPPERS or original flexible cloth, London, Tilt & Bogue [later David Bogue], 1835 - 1853. Over the 19 years of its publication, the Comic Almanac, enjoyed various editors, including the pseudonymous "Rigdum Funnidos", Henry Mayhew, and Robert B. Brough, and experienced a reduction in format from octavo to duodecimo in the years 1848 and 1849. The stiff paper wrappers with designs by Cruikshank finally gave way in 1850 to stiff gilt-decorated cloth-covered wrappers. What never changed was the inclusion of twelve etched plates by George Cruikshank in each issue, as well as black-and-white illustrations in the text by various hands. Larger folding frontispieces, also by Cruikshank, etched and finely coloured by hand, were added from the year 1850. The etchings for "The Comic Almanac" reflect his close observation of Victorian society and those for the earlier issues are considered some of his best work. The spines of the first seven volumes are worn, with a little loss, particularly at head and foot, though the lettering is largely present; the rear wrapper of the 1840 volume is loose; the next six volumes have been very neatly, professionally rebacked using old material, either paper or fine-grained cloth, and match the plain spines of the last volumes' original cloth. There are two or three contemporary ownership entries, and a few pencil entries for 1843. The contents are in good condition, though there is slight spotting and browning to the edges of the plates from 1843 to 1847. It is very rarely that a complete series in the original ephemeral bindings is offered.

CUSS , TERENCE CAMERER
The English Watch 1585-1970 a Unique Alliance of Art, Design and Inventive Genius
. size: 300 mm x 237 mm. 504pp. 830 coloured illustrations. Splendid hardback in pristine jacket This is the first book to cover all aspects of English watches from every period. Watches represent a fascinating combination of applied art and science and an outstanding contribution to their history and development was made in England. By dividing the watches into six periods, each with its own introduction, the author has been able to provide an admirably clear and comprehensive survey, to describe the pioneering inventions as they were made and to illustrate the distinctive character of the English watch as it evolved. An outline of each period is followed by information on the trade in London and the provinces, watchmakers, case makers, case styles and decoration, dials, hands, characteristics of the mechanisms and timekeeping capabilities. Over 290 watches illustrating these points have been carefully selected from both private and public collections and details have been enlarged to clarify important features. Many of these watches have never been illustrated before. There is an extensive glossary which includes further technical information and, as well as a detailed general index, there are separate indexes of makers and case makers. The author, a dealer for more than forty years, has a lasting enthusiasm for his subject. He is familiar with its many facets and used to providing answers on a wide range of specific questions. This book is intended not only to be a useful guide to those new to the subject but also a valuable point of reference for those already familiar with it. this publication is a major contribution to the genre and will be a standard reference for many years to come.[ British Museum magazine, 2009.] Terence Camerer Cuss, the sixth generation of the family firm Camerer Cuss & Co founded in London in 1788, has been involved in the world of antique watches and clocks all his life. He has been a liveryman of the Clockmakers' Company since 1969. The Antique Collectors' Club first published The Camerer Cuss Book of Antique Watches, a revised and enlarged edition of his father's Country Life Book of Watches, in 1976 and they have reprinted it several times. He moved the business premises from New Oxford Street to St. James's in 1983 where he continued dealing for the next twenty years. He wrote the limited edition catalogue of Lord Sandberg's important collection The Sandberg Watch Collection published by Antiquorum, Geneva in 1998. He has contributed a number of articles to magazines and periodicals, and continues to enjoy his subject, the research and occasional discovery!. (ISBN: 9781851495887) .

DRAYTON, MICHAEL (1563 - 1631 )
Nimphidia: The Court of Fayrie. Circa 1625. Illustrated By Nicholas Parry
. Nimphidia: The Court of Fayrie. Circa 1625. Illustrated by Nicholas Parry. Tern Press, Market Drayton. 2004, Sixteen watercolours. 52(2)p. 13" x 9.25". Original watercolours scanned and printed digitally by North Shropshire Printers. Text in Caslon on Magnani. Grey cloth spine , leaf-print pattern in brown and tan paper over boards. One of a limited edition of 50 copies. Nimphidia is a narrative poem (published in 1627) about fairies, with King Oberon having many adventures when he sets off in pursuit of his queen. Michael Drayton (1563-1631). was born at Hartshill in Warwickshire in 1563 and as a youth became page to Sir Henry Goodeere of Polesworth. Goodeere is to be credited for Drayton's education. Drayton fell in love with Sir Henry's daughter, Anne, who served as an inspiration for 'Idea'. Drayton's career as a poet was long: from his first published work in 1591 to his last in 1630. He died in comparative poverty, but was buried in Westminster Abbey. He was an extremely prolific writer, producing historical, topographical, and religious verse, as well as odes, sonnets, and satires. His The Ballad of Agincourt opens with the famous lines: "fayre stood the winde for France When we our sailes advaunce ". This, Drayton's most popular work. Nymphidia is a mock-heroic series of fairy poems, or 'Nimphalls'1, much influenced by Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Drayton died in London on December 2, 1631. He was buried in Westminster Abbey under a monument with an epitaph by Ben Jonson commissioned by the Countess of Dorset. [ DR - 3 ]( private press ).
