ANON.,
Fairy Tales, Selected from the Best Authors.
0. 1788. [Volume I]. London, Printed for W. Lane, Leadenhall Street,,1788; 12mo; [vi], 288pp..; contemporary sheep, spine gilt-ruled, red lettering-piece; front joint split, front board held only by its strings, loss of leather of spine all along the split in the joint;, boards slightly scuffed and marked; lacks frontispiece and [2] plates, top half of second leaf of prelims missing,, first gathering loose, corners of outer margins at the top of c. 20 pages cut round at some point,; contemporary owner's names on front paste-down, with 20th century bookplate super-imposed . Lane's "Tales of the Fairies" is very rare, even for 18th century fairy tale editions. Our copy is offered with all its faults because it is so rarely met with, but it has been tampered with by a former owner who wanted to conceal the fact that it was only the first of two volumes and that it had already lost its copper-plates: words on the title-page have been gently rubbed out - presumably "Adorned with plates" and "Volume I" - and the words "of the first" have been rubbed out at the bottom of the last page, so it no longer reads "End of the first Volume"; presumably part of leaf [ii] of the prelims - the contents leaf - was removed for the same reason. The contents are otherwise complete, and comprise; The Introduction. History of the Princess Hebe and the Fairy Anguiletta. Hitory of the Royal Ram or the Wishes. History of Graciosa and Percinet. History of Finetta. History of the White Cat. History of Princess Carpillona. History of the Pidgeon and Dove. History of the Yellow Dwarf.History of Young and Handsome.

LE BRUN, ANNIE
Sur le Champ
While still a student, Annie Le Brun discovered the shock of surrealism; She read Nadja first, hand copying Crazy Love and the Anthology of Black Humor. Shortly after, in 1963, she met André Breton and took part in the activities of the surrealist movement until 1969, on the dissolution of the group. Later, against what she considered to be the programmed liquidation of singularity, love and distraction, she confided that "with the surrealists one breathed, if only to discover the multiplicity of horizons what will have opened this unique attempt in the twentieth century to think all man?" This is how she stood in the wake of surrealism, embracing her quest for "convulsive beauty" and her lyrical insurrection. In 1972, she found a collective activity around Editions Now founded by Pierre Peuchmaurd, with the poet and playwright Radovan Ivsic, who became her companion, as well as Georges Goldfayn, Gerard Legrand and the painter Toyen. The latter had illustrated in 1967 her first poetic book On the field. In these years, she wrote and publishes several other collections, which will be collected in 2004 in a single volume, under the title Ombre pour ombre. During this prolific period of creation, she co-authored, among other collections and essays, three hybrid works in which her poetic writing is combined with illustrations - both photographic and plastics - from different artists: The Crossing of the Alps, co-written in 1972 with Radovan Ivši? and illustrated by the photographs of the Italian sculptor Fabio De Sanctis; Nearby the nomads, a poetic collection illustrated by Toyen in 1972; and finally Annular Moon, poetic story also illustrated by Toyen in 1977.

D'IAKONOVA, ELIZAVETA ALEKSANDROVNA [ 1874-1902 ]
Dnevnik Elizavety D'iakonovoi 1886-1902 G. : Literaturnye Etiudy, Stikhotvoreniiya, Stat'i, Pis'ma.
. Izdanie 4-e, znachitel'no dopolnennoe. Pod red. i s vstupitel'nymi stat'yami A.A.D'yakonova. Moskva, izdanie V.M.Sablina, 1912; 836PP. bound in new cloth, title page repaired as right bottom corner was missing , new end papers and title label
¶ D'iakonova came to fame posthumously, as the author of a diary which was frequently compared to Bashkirtseva's. The diary's success was due to the author's frankness, the timely "woman question' issues that it touched on, and the view of many that she 'typified" young women of her generation. D'iakonova was bom into a merchant family in the village of Nerekhta in 1874. In her diary she describes her mother as despotic and unloving. She completed secondary school in laroslavl' and then wanted to continue her education at the university level, but her mother was strongly opposed to her attending. D'iakonova was forced to wait four years to apply for entrance into the Higher Courses for Women in SPb. when she would no longer need parental approval. Even then her mother was able to block her acceptance for a while. The courses had been her escape, and their reality proved to be a great disappointment. While still a student, she began her literary career with the publication of a translation. Then she published an article, "Women's Education" (Zhenskoe obrazovanie), in the journal Women's Came (ZhenD) and several fictional sketches under the pseudonym E. Nerekhtskaia/D'iakonova graduated from the courses in 1899, She rejected an earlier idea of going to work as a rural schoolteacher. Instead she traveled around Russia. In 1900 she went 10 Paris and started law school at the Sorbonne. She used her life abroad in Paris and London as the basis of several semi-fictional pieces which she published in the journals Kitvite (KievI) and Northern Land (Severnyi krai). While at the Sorbonne, D'takonova developed an obsessive crush on a French doctor and psychologist. She visited him under the pretext of having a psychologically caused illness. These efforts came to nothing. In 1902, at the age of twenty-eight she committed suicide [ DL 3/5 ].

GUIZOT, F.P.G.,
Discours Academiques
. suivis des discours prononcés pour la distribution des prix au concours generale de l'Université et devant diverses sociétés réligieuses, et de trois essais de philosophie littéraire et politique. Paris, Didier, 1861; iv, 424 pp.; contemporary morocco-backed marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt with raised bands; corners a little worn, short, barely visible split to front joint, edges minimally rubbed, slight foxing, mostly confined to first few pages and last gatherings. Signed presentation copy of the first edition of this collection of papers, some of which date back as far as the eighteen-twenties. The three essays which follow the addresses are on "Encyclopédie" - 58 pages including a well-researched historical bibliography of encyclopedias published in Europe - "Abrégé", and "Élections" (on political elections, c. 40 pp.). This copy was inscribed, signed and given as a birthday present to the English woman of letters Charlotte Mary Yonge. author of family and historical novels and of children's books, popular educator, and devout Anglican. It's possible that the blue silk bookmark, now at page 223, the beginning of an address to the "Société Biblique Protestante" on 30th April 1851, was left there by her or by the author. Several further addresses concern religious instruction or education. A very attractive association copy, which documents an Anglo-French friendship, and is itself a document of French history as well as of Victorian history.

LA CURNE DE SAINTE-PALAYE
Mémoires Sur L'ancienne Chevalerie, 3 Volumes
. 1781. considerée comme un établissement politique et militaire. Nouvelle edition, augmentée d'un volume. Paris, 1781; xii, 391, 320, xvi, 456pp.; cont. light green paper-covered boards, spines simply decorated with gilt rules and bay-leaves, gilt meander rule to boards, yellow silk markers; spines faded & rubbed at head and tail, with loss of green paper, extremities also rubbed, including corners (mostly just the tips), small typographical bookplates of Otto A. Hirth, very small 19th. C. oval lib. stamp at foot of title-pages. A key study of the subject which influenced generation upon generation of antiquaries, scholars, and poets, augmented in this edition, including a long essay (c.250pp.) "Memoires historiques sur la Chasse".Some passages in this particular set have been whitened with chalk, making them a little harder to read but not illegible; we could have had these chalk marks removed but, we surmise that they may have been made in preparing a new edition of the work, and did not wish to detract from its historical and bibliographical value. Rare.

STAEL-HOLSTEIN, A.L.G.NECKER, MME DE
Corinna
0. 1810. ossia L'Italia. Six volumes bound in three, Napoli, Angelo Trani, 1810; 6mo (c. 9 x 14 cm.); cont. half calf, spines gilt-ruled with ornament in blind, double red morocco labels; rubbed and worn, some headbands or tailbands a little chipped. An attractive set, each volume with the book-binder's ticket of Thomas Rigden of Dover [Ramsden, p. 140 (also half calf, gilt)], and the slightly later ownership entry on the title-pages "Frampton, Malta, 1828". 1810 was the notorious year in the author's life when her newly completed "De l'Allemagne", though passed by the Paris censor, was nevertheless seized and suppressed. This may possibly have have been the occasion for the Naples publisher to issue the romance "Corinne", which was first published in Italian in Firenze, in 1808.
