ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN,
The Complete Stories
. The stories of Hans Christian Andersen are known all over the world and he is one of the most translated authors of all time. Andersen's fame rests on his fairy tales and stories, written between 1835 and 1872, among the best known of which are 'The Ugly Duckling', 'The Little Mermaid', 'The Princess and the Pea', 'The Snow Queen', 'The Nightingale', and 'The Steadfast Tin Soldier'. With these fairy tales, inspired by the great tradition of the Arabian Nights and by the brothers Grimm, Andersen became known as the father of the modern fairytale. Moreover, Andersen's works were original. Only twelve of his 156 known fairy stories drew on folktales. This complete collection of Andersen's stories is based on Jean Hersholt's classic translation. His stories have been widely illustrated by some of the best-known illustrators of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, in particular those of the Edwardian period - the Golden Age of illustration - including W. Heath Robinson, Arthur Rackham, Mabel Lucie Attwell, Kay Nielsen and Edmund Dulac. Around ninety of the stories are illustrated with reproductions of original illustrations from classic Edwardian to contemporary illustrators. In addition, there are thirteen newly commissioned illustrations for some of Andersen's less well-known stories. 2005, 976 pages, 60 colour and 30 b/w illustrations, 267 x 164 mm, hardback, 2005. [ heavy book ! ] 1st edition thus, 1st printing.

Les Aventures de Maitre Tetu
0. et de Miss Docile. Conte Allegorique. Traduit de l'Anglais pour l'instruction de la Jeunesse. Paris: Delarue,& Lille: Castiaux, n.d. [c. 1820?]; oblong 16mo (c. 12.5 x 11 cm).; 63 pp. with frontispiece and seven plates, all wood-cuts, coloured by hand; publisher's printed boards, title within an decorative border on front, illustration within same border on rear board; lacking spine, boards marked and a little darkened, original owner's name on half-title, text lightly spotted. An extremely rare French children's book, printed in Lille, an allegorical moral purportedly based on an English original. Experts have been consulted in vain to find an English book of which this could be a version, but it could nevertheless have been taken from an English source which was part of a larger collection of moral tales. The wood-cuts (hand-coloured as issued) are bold and very good. Two bear the initials C.S.J. in the block. The allegory itself shows Master Headstrong led astray by letting himself be led by Passion, but finally finding the path to Virtue and Religion through the good offices of Reason.

Bilder Und Reime,
0. 1184. Reime und Bilder fuer Kinder. Erste [und Zweite] Lieferung. Dresden, bei J.Naumann. Pictures and Rhymes, Rhymes and Pictures, for Children. London, D. Bogue, n.d. [1844]; c. 16.5 x 12.5 cm.; English publisher's red cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, front board lettered in gilt with gilt pictorial vignette, yellow endpapers, a.e.g.; recased, one gathering detached, scattered foxing, some light finger-marks, light damp-stain to nearly half the contents. A rare and charming German illustrated children's book, which seems to survive as often as not in this two-language edition. This is not properly a bi-lingual edition, but the original Dresden edition, each page with a lithographed illustration and verse in German, printed on one side only, bound together with an English translation in letterpress of each verse, also printed on one side only. Compare the Oppenheim copy (Hauswedell & Nolte, Auktion 200 [1974], Lot 191, in later half leather), likewise German and English; Seebass II, 186 [offering just the Dresden Edition, a slightly cropped copy]: "Originalausgabe eines der feinsten Kinderbuecher der vierziger Jahre; es zeigt den Einfluss der Hey-Speckterschen Fabelausgben.."; Rümann, Die Illustrierten Bücher des 19. Jahrhunderts, No.1908. Hoff-Budde's 1922 bibliography of works illustrated by Ludwig Richter lists 29 of the 48 illustrations as lithographed after Richter. In our copy the first book of the German "Bilder und Reime" consists of illustrated title-page and 22 pages [of 24]: it lacks two pages - page 14 "Miesekaetzchen" and Page 16 "Der Morgen"; its first four pages were bound in the wrong order when the book was recased, while two other illustrations, pages 12 and 13, were misnumbered from the start by the printer. The second book of "Bilder und Reime" is complete, with title-page and 24 pages of illustrated text, though dampstained within the lower third of the pages. The English "Pictures and Rhymes" has one title-page, in letter-press, (as is correct,) and 47 (of 48) pages, the translator's "Preface" being printed on the verso of the first page of English verse; it lacks the text for "Puss". Photocopies of all the missing pages have been obtained and are supplied with our copy.

Fairy Tales, Selected from the Best Authors.
0. 1788. [Volume I]. London, Printed for W. Lane, Leadenhall Street,,1788; 12mo; [vi], 288pp..; contemporary sheep, spine gilt-ruled, red lettering-piece; front joint split, front board held only by its strings, loss of leather of spine all along the split in the joint;, boards slightly scuffed and marked; lacks frontispiece and [2] plates, top half of second leaf of prelims missing,, first gathering loose, corners of outer margins at the top of c. 20 pages cut round at some point,; contemporary owner's names on front paste-down, with 20th century bookplate super-imposed . Lane's "Tales of the Fairies" is very rare, even for 18th century fairy tale editions. Our copy is offered with all its faults because it is so rarely met with, but it has been tampered with by a former owner who wanted to conceal the fact that it was only the first of two volumes and that it had already lost its copper-plates: words on the title-page have been gently rubbed out - presumably "Adorned with plates" and "Volume I" - and the words "of the first" have been rubbed out at the bottom of the last page, so it no longer reads "End of the first Volume"; presumably part of leaf [ii] of the prelims - the contents leaf - was removed for the same reason. The contents are otherwise complete, and comprise; The Introduction. History of the Princess Hebe and the Fairy Anguiletta. Hitory of the Royal Ram or the Wishes. History of Graciosa and Percinet. History of Finetta. History of the White Cat. History of Princess Carpillona. History of the Pidgeon and Dove. History of the Yellow Dwarf.History of Young and Handsome.

ANON.,
Young Englands Little Library.
0. 1844. A Collection of Original Tales for Children, in Prose and Verse. By Eminent Authors. London, Wm. S. Orr & Co. Paternoster Row, 1844; small 4to; twentieth century binder's cloth, with gilt title "Little Library"; ink smudge to extreme outer edge of c. 30 pages, three or four very short marginal tears. The volume consists of eleven parts, which were also available to buy separately, of 24 to 32 pages, with numerous lithographic plates, most of which are lightly spotted. After the title-page, printed in red and black, and the frontispiece full-length portrait of "the Editor", there is an introduction and a contents leaf, which has been annotated in light pencil giving references in the Osborne Collection catalogue for such individual works present here as are listed there. The contents are: Adam the Gardener [abridged from Charles Cowden Clarke]; The Princess Narina [also atributed to Clarke]; Number One [Mrs S.C.Hall]; Perseverance [Clarke]; The Curate's Favourite Scholar [Mary Howitt]; The Remarkable Nigger and three more verse tales [F.W.N.Bailey]; Little Chatterbox [Mrs S.C.Hall]; Picture of the Virgin [Mary Howitt]; Savoyard Boy and his Sister [J.D.Haas, after Hermann Kletke]; Adventures of Jack Holyday [Albert Smith]; Glory [Thomas Gaspey]. The majority of the plates seem to be by John Absalon. The pagination at the end of three of the stories is erratic, or rather erroneous, but the texts are complete. Two of the verse-tales by F.W.N.Bailey are so overtly racist that it's hard to imagine how they would have appealed to the same readership as Clarke or Howitt, but this is perhaps a lesson this compilation inadvertently teaches.

GUIZOT, F.P.G.,
Discours Academiques
0. suivis des discours prononcés pour la distribution des prix au concours generale de l'Université et devant diverses sociétés réligieuses, et de trois essais de philosophie littéraire et politique. Paris, Didier, 1861; iv, 424 pp.; contemporary morocco-backed marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt with raised bands; corners a little worn, short, barely visible split to front joint, edges minimally rubbed, slight foxing, mostly confined to first few pages and last gatherings. Signed presentation copy of the first edition of this collection of papers, some of which date back as far as the eighteen-twenties. The three essays which follow the addresses are on "Encyclopédie" - 58 pages including a well-researched historical bibliography of encyclopedias published in Europe - "Abrégé", and "Élections" (on political elections, c. 40 pp.). This copy was inscribed, signed and given as a birthday present to the English woman of letters Charlotte Mary Yonge. author of family and historical novels and of children's books, popular educator, and devout Anglican. It's possible that the blue silk bookmark, now at page 223, the beginning of an address to the "Société Biblique Protestante" on 30th April 1851, was left there by her or by the author. Several further addresses concern religious instruction or education. A very attractive association copy, which documents an Anglo-French friendship, and is itself a document of French history as well as of Victorian history.

HAMMOND, W.G.,
J.R. R. Tolkien: A Descriptive Bibliography.
. With the assistance of D.A.Anderson. Foreword by Rayner UnwinWinchester , St. Paul's bibliogaphies and New Castle Delaware, Oak Knoll Books, 1993, 434 pp. Bound in blue cloth with silver lettering on front board and spine. 0 938768 42 5 THE FIRST EDITION +++ The second volume in the Winchester Bibliographies of Twentieth Century Writers series. This is the most comprehensive descriptive bibliography of J.R.R. Tolkien, one of the most popular writers of the twentieth century. His children's book The Hobbit, his epic The Lord of the Rings, and his last triumph, The Silmarillion, have been read by millions and are at the core of modern fantasy fiction. A noted philologist, Tolkien also made significant contributions to Old and Middle English studies, including a landmark essay on Beowulf and standard editions of Ancrene Wisse and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. This bibliography explores the full range of his imaginative and scholarly works, from juvenilia to the posthumous The History of Middle-Earth. Books written by Tolkien in whole or in part, his Contributions to Periodicals, Published Letters and Art Work, Interviews, Recordings, and translations of his writings are described. Special attention is paid to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, whose many editions and complex textual changes are analyzed in detail. The publishing history of Tolkien's works is told at length, with notes drawn from publishers' archives and from Tolkien's correspondence. There are eight pages of plates, a chronology and an index. This bibliography will become a standard reference book for scholars, librarians, booksellers and collectors whose already keen interest in Tolkien continues to grow. (ISBN: 1873040113) .

HOFFMANN, HEINRICH,
Bastian Der Faulpelz.
0. Eine Bildergeschichte fuer Kinder.c.24.5 x 18 cm.; 2 - 24 pp. each with half-page hand-coloured illustration and letterpress verse text, all within a plain ruled border; twentieth-century canvas-backed marbled paper-covered boards; lacking the title-page and the first page, the second page torn with loss to margin and border and mounted on paper, very small marginal loss to last page also, which is mounted on paper too, some spots and finger-marks, two closed tears, but contents generally clean or fairly clean. Heinrich Hofmann, beside his profession of doctor and psychiatrist, was the author of many children's books, including "König Nussknacker" and "Der Struwelpeter". This is one of his most ingenious illustrated stories in verse, a cautionary tale about the importance of learning to read, and the dire consequences for its hero, Bastian, of not trying to. One day when he is playing truant, his dreams are interrupted by a succession of strange people who embody and display the letters of the dreaded word "Faulpelz" ("Lazybones"). He ignores their warnings. Hoffmann believed in teaching children by example, not by precept, which is why his characters so often live out the consequences of their conduct or misconduct to their bitter end. In this tale he is obviously also taking the opportunity to teach his audience some of the alphabet at the same time. Since our copy lacks the title-page (as well as page 1), we have taken the title for cataloguing purposes from another source. We believe this is the edition published in Frankfurt by the Literarische Anstalt, probably between c.1860 and c.1870, the illustrations being coloured by hand. Colour facsimiles of the two missing pages are loosely inserted at the beginning of the volume, which has been restored at some time with great care, and bound using hand-marbled paper for the boards.
