O'BRIAN, PATRICK:
Caesar and Hussein. 2 Volumes in Slip-Case,
. 1999, The author's first two novels published in 1930 and 1938 respectively. Neither had been reprinted since. Caesar tells the poignant, autobiographical tale of a panda-leopard. Hussein is a picaresque tale of the adventures of a young Indian boy growing to manhood under the Raj. Patrick O'Brian's gift for storytelling and love of natural history are already well in evidence and both books are excellent entertainment for readers of all ages. With a new foreword by the author. One of the 250 signed copies of the limited edition bound in leather, tooled spines . Copy as new.

ORTEL, H.,
Geistlicher Frauen-Zimmer Spiegel
[Two parts in one volume] Frankfurt in Georg Muellers Verlag MDCLXIV [1664]; 12o (c. 5 x 11 cm.); [ii] [xviii], 766, [xviii] pp, with 44 copper-engraved plates, and engraved title-page to Part Two (the pagination is continuous); contemporary binding in dark pink velvet, with traces of a floral pattern, burnished endpapers, and two intricately-worked silver-plated clasps (complete and in full working order), gilt and gauffered edges; covers worn in places, with a few splits, very small brown stain with minute hole on p. 407/8; a very good, very well-preserved copy. A work very popular in its day, offering comfort but also instruction, or comfort usually in the form of instruction, and prayers, for women in whatever situations or tribulations they might experience in a very violent period of German history. It was obviously intended, and used, for devotion and meditation at home rather than in Church. In an informative blog for the University of Pennsylvania Dr Elisabeth Esser Braun, who had donated her copy of the 1708 edtion of this book to the university, refers also to a longer study by Ferdinand van Ingen, "Frauentugend und Tugendexempel . Zum Frauenspiegel des Hieronymus Ortelius und Philip von Zesens Biblischen Frauenportaets", in "Barocker Lust-Spiegel. Studien zur Literatur des Barock", (Amsterdam, 1984). We cannot ascertain whether our edition is the first to contain the additional poems by diverse authors, particularly Johannes Rist [known by some of his contemporaries as "Nordischer Apoll], but the title-page implies it is. The binding, with its 17th century-crafted silver-plated clasps and gauffered edges, is a delightful and uncommon survival. The engravings mostly show women of the Bible, whose lives and example inspire the separate chapters of the text.

Taylor and Sewell's most comprehensive bibliography of the St Dominic's Press, with a generous provision of specimen pages together with copious additional material in this lavish special edition as noted above. The specimen pages in the book are facsimiles, however they are letterpress rather than photolitho reproductions, printed with type reset by the Whittington Press. In contrast, the portofolio specimen pages are original leaves printed at St Dominic's Press. This copy contains two items in the Portfolio: four pages from 'Horae Beatae Virginis' and a leaf from 'Lectiones ad Matutinam' - a label inside the front cover of the portfolio notes that only 'about half' of the special edition copies contain the latter item. A wonderful immaculate cop in slipcase( private press ).
