PFIZER, GUSTAV,
Der Nibelungen Noth
0. 1843. Illustrirt mit Holzschnitten nach Zeichnungen von Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld und Eugen Neureuther. Die Bearbeitung des Textes von Dr. Gustav Pfizer. First edition of one of the major works of German Romantic book illustration, the text printed throughout within a scrolled rule border, with decorative initials, marginal illustrations, and ornaments incorporated in the text as well as half-page and full-page illustrations. Schnorr took over six of his own designs for his Nibelungen frescoes in the new Muenchener Residenz for this work (hence the printed dedication to King Ludwig of Bavaria) and added new designs and decorations: all are strongly in the tradition established by Peter von Cornelius in a series of etchings published in 1817. This work is widely celebrated, and features in major exhibitions on German illustration of the period, including "Die Kunst der Illustration", Wolfenbuettel, 1986-7, No. 24 (p.59 of the catalogue). PILKINGTON, M.,
A Dictionary of Painters
0. 1805. from the Revival of the Art to the Present Period. A New Edition, with Considerable Alterations, Additions, an Appendix, and an Index, by Henry Fuseli, R.A. London, 1805; 4to; xx, [ii],, 694, [xx] pp.; contemporary half calf, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco lettering piece, marbled boards; corners rubbed, spine and front hinge a little rubbed, a few preliminary pages bound in the wrong order but complete; a good and handsome copy. Pilkington dedicated the original edition of his Dictionary to the President and Council of the Royal Academy. This is the first edition of Fuseli's edition, containing many new biographical articles, and a short additional Preface. Fuseli revised and expanded this 1805 edition in a new edition five years later. The editorship and additions by Fuseli, a leading exponent of English, or rather of European Romantic painting, as well as a scholar of Fine Art, make this an invaluable work.

SHAKESPEARE, WILLIAM,
The Plays
0. 1825. in Nine Volumes. EIGHT volumes only [of nine], London, William Pickering, Chancery Lane, 1825; approx. 3.1 ins x 1.7 ins; each volume c. 300 pp. with 33 copper-engraved plates, and a few wood-engraved circular vignettes; contemporary maroon morocco, spines panelled in gilt with raised bands, lettered in gilt with the titles of the plays within one of the panels. triple gilt rule to boards, all edges gilt; several plates slightly or marginally embrowned, a few more than the others, text clean; Volume I lacks general title (discarded by the binder); Volume III lacks the final leaf (the last two pages of "A Winter's Tale"), title-page of Vol.IX long ago mended with neat stitching; bindings a little rubbed at extremities, a little darkened, bottom corner of rear board of Volume III scratched; generally very attractive in its miniature morocco binding, though a little used, and internally clean, but missing Volume II as well as the one leaf of Volume III. Spielman 456. "The illustrated edition of the Pickering Shakespeare is rare in itself as only a small number of the sets was issued with the engraved frontispieces". He quotes Sheringham, writing in "The Connoisseur" [Nov. 1902]: "The plates of the Shakespeare in particular, 38 in number, were all lost, and the later copies of course are without them." The plates were engraved after Thomas Stothard - except for that of Puck, which is after Sir Joshua Reynolds' already celebrated painting.Since there are usually four plates in each of our volumes, we guess that our Volume IX, with only three plates, may be short of one plate.

Corinna
0. 1810. ossia L'Italia. Six volumes bound in three, Napoli, Angelo Trani, 1810; 6mo (c. 9 x 14 cm.); cont. half calf, spines gilt-ruled with ornament in blind, double red morocco labels; rubbed and worn, some headbands or tailbands a little chipped. An attractive set, each volume with the book-binder's ticket of Thomas Rigden of Dover [Ramsden, p. 140 (also half calf, gilt)], and the slightly later ownership entry on the title-pages "Frampton, Malta, 1828". 1810 was the notorious year in the author's life when her newly completed "De l'Allemagne", though passed by the Paris censor, was nevertheless seized and suppressed. This may possibly have have been the occasion for the Naples publisher to issue the romance "Corinne", which was first published in Italian in Firenze, in 1808.

SWIFT, JONATHAN, AND OTHERS,
The Examiners
0. for the Year 1711. To which is prefix'd A Letter to the Examiner. London .. for John Morphew .. and A.Dodd.. 1712; xvi, 306pp. [12 pp.] index, [2 pp.] adverts; 12mo; contemporary panelled calf, spine gilt in compartments with raised bands, red leather lettering-piece; binding used and worn, front hinge split but firmly held on the strings, splits in rear hinge, trace of older tape along inner margin of front paste-down, early name - "Edwart Jones, Bafonwen" at top of rear free endpaper. "The Examiner" included contributions by Swift, who took over the editorship. According to Hawkesworth, in Volume VII of his 1760 edition of Swift's Works, Swift's own contributions were Nos 13 - 44. This volume reprinted the periodical in a handy form for contemporary readers, and provides the modern reader with part of the context of Swift's papers. As the printer writes: "It is conceived, That altho' these Papers were writ for the Public Service, upon Incidents, as they daily happened; yet in them are treated several Subjects, which may be of general and lasting Use. Neither perhaps will Posterity be unwilling to see several Observations made, and Facts related, concerning the late Disposition of Affairs, which they will probably meet nowhere else ..".
