JUNG-STILLING, JOHANN HEINRICH,
Heinrich Stillings Jugend.
0. 1780. Eine wahrhafte Geschichte.134pp.; WITH: Heinrich Stillings Juenglings-Jahre.188pp.; AND: Heinrich Stillings Wanderschaft. 176pp.; THREE WORKS IN ONE VOLUME, Frankfurt und Leipzig, 1780; with a few wood-cut fleurons and tail-pieces; contemporary German half calf, all edges red; binding rubbed,, particularly at corners, small chip at head of spine, only half of the black leather lettering-piece on spine present, roughly six opening pages of the first work a little embrowned and spotted, otherwise however internally fresh. The first three parts of an autobiographical novel, and all that had appeared to date, although Jung-Stilling was to continue the narrative with "Häusliches Leben" [1789], "Lehrjahre" [1804], and "Alter" [1817]. The absence of a publisher's name and of the phrase "Mit .. Privileg" suggests this edition is a "Raubdruck". a pirate edition which was cashing in on the work's great popularity. Any 18th Century edition, however, is now scarce.

Mauke. ( Corpus apologetarum Christianorum saeculi secundi ; vol. 1-5 ) editio altera. Friederich Mauke, Jena, 1847-1850, second edition, five volumes bound in two, 1786 pp. + 4 facsimiles, size 22 x 14 cm. approx. complete works of the early Christian writer, Justin Martyr, giving parallel texts in Greek and Latin, accompanied by commentary in footnotes. Full calf Leather binding, showing some signs of wear but generally robust, front and rear covers double-ruled in gilt on all four sides with gilt floral ornament in each corner, forming a rectangular panel, further gilt patterning of lines and dots along cover edges; gilt titles on labels on spines, with five raised bands, each having a line of gilt (now somewhat eroded) above and below; head and tail bands intact; cover surfaces have many spots of a darker colour (possibly from old ink stains), also there are scuff marks, particularly on the spines, and there is some wear to the cover corners and edges of both vols. and at head and tail of spine on vol. 2; apart from the upper joint of vol. 2, the joints remain strong; end papers brown; pages edged in pale red along fore-edge and lower-edge, and in brown along upper-edge; front end paper of each volume has bookplate, partly defaced, of Thomas Raffles D.D. L.L.D. (1788-1863, Congregationalist minister) with his coat of arms, partly covered by what appears to be the remains of a bookplate of the Congregational College Library, Manchester, accompanied by the former library shelf mark of "G.9.H"; text is clean and unmarked throughout, apart from slight foxing on just a few pages. Rare book. No copy of this edition in the British Library. ? Justin was born around 100 (both his birth and death dates are approximate) at Flavia Neapolis (ancient Shechem, modern Nablus) in Samaria (the middle portion of Israel, between Galilee and Judea) of pagan Greek parents. He was brought up with a good education in rhetoric, poetry, and history. He studied various schools of philosophy in Alexandria and Ephesus , joining himself first to Stoicism, then Pythagoreanism, then Platonism, looking for answers to his questions. While at Ephesus, he was impressed by the steadfastness of the Christian martyrs, Justin became a Christian, but he continued to wear the cloak that was the characteristic uniform of the professional teacher of philosophy. His position was that pagan philosophy, especially Platonism, is not simply wrong, but is a partial grasp of the truth, and serves as "a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ." He engaged in debates and disputations with non-Christians of all varieties, pagans, Jews, and heretics. He opened a school of Christian philosophy and accepted students, first at Ephesus and then later at Rome. He was tried before the Roman prefect Rusticus, refused to renounce Christianity, and was put to death by beheading along with six of his students, one of them a woman. A record of the trial, probably authentic, is preserved, known as The Acts of Justin the Martyr.

KANNENGIESZER, E.H.G.,
Sammlung
0. 1821. der in der Koeniglich Grosz= Britannisch= Hannoverschen Gerichten ueblichen Eidesformeln zum Gebrauch fuer Aemter, Stadtobrigkeiten, adeliche= auch Garnison= und Regiments=Gerichte. Dritte verbesserte und sehr vermehrte Ausgabe. Hannover, 1821; 104 pp.; contemporary marbled boards, spine unlettered; cont. name on front blank. Sixteen leaves of contemporary laid paper have been bound in by the first owner, with four further oaths of the same period entered in manuscript, the rest blank. A very rare handbook intended for the use of the judiciary and 'local government' civil servants in the kingdom of Hanover, and also for military trials and court martials, gathered out of the manifold legal and bureaucratic publications in which they were originally to be sought for when needed. Solemnly swearing to carrry out one's duties responsibly appears to have been a condition for being engaged for or appointed to a task or office, and the oaths are often so detailed as to provide unusually real accounts, effectively full job descriptions, of the duties of such village officers as the nightwatchman, the warden of bridges, the tax-gatherer, the turf-moor warden, the "Vogt", the midwife, and so on. The medical profession, doctors, surgeons, apothecaries are equally required to swear specific oaths to carry out their duties responsibly, as is almost anybody serving the public. Ten pages are devoted to "Der Juden-Eid", and revisions thereto; as far as we understand, the authorities seem to be wrestling with the complexity of requiring of a Jewish subject a binding oath, while not expecting him to recognise his God in the Christian God [parts of this text have scattered underlining in contemporary black ink].

METIVIER, GEORGES,
Rimes Guernesiaises
0. par un Câtelain. Londres: Simpkin Marshall, Guernesey: E.Barbet, n.d. [c. 1840 - 1850]; [vi], 224 pp. with wood-engraved frontispiece and 14 wood-engraved pictorial head-or tail-pieces; binder's buckram, plainly lettered on the spine; the penultimate page is torn in the margins, with loss of two or three words. Georges Métivier [1790 - 1881], known as "The Guernsey Burns", drew heavily on traditiional and oral material for his poems in the Guernsey patois, but he lived much of his life in exile. In the preface to the edition of his "Rimes guernesiaises" which we are offering, the poet rails against an edition that had been published in Guernsey a few years previously under the same title in his absence, and without his editorial imput or supervision: "L'auteur des RIMES GUERNESIAISES n'habitait plus l'ile lorsque parut, il y a quelques années, un recueil sous ce titre, dans lequel se trouvait introduites plusieurs pièces qui lui sont entièrement inconnues, ces morceaux étant composés dans un patois désagréable, et très-différent du dialecte si expressif, nerveux et sonore, de la gogenarde vingtaine des Carités". Judging by the paper of our edition, and by the style of the wood-engraved illustrations, the book we are offering is from about 1840 - 50; it is therefore probable that the edition from which Métivier wished to disassociate himself, and the dialect and content of which he here corrects, is the 1831 edition usually associated with him and usually seen as having met his approval. A 32-page glossary is included in the pagination. The frontispiece, an illustration to the poem "Lamentations de Damaris", shows figures in front of an old house in Rue de la Fontaine, the street where Métivier was born.

[Two parts in one volume] Frankfurt in Georg Muellers Verlag MDCLXIV [1664]; 12o (c. 5 x 11 cm.); [ii] [xviii], 766, [xviii] pp, with 44 copper-engraved plates, and engraved title-page to Part Two (the pagination is continuous); contemporary binding in dark pink velvet, with traces of a floral pattern, burnished endpapers, and two intricately-worked silver-plated clasps (complete and in full working order), gilt and gauffered edges; covers worn in places, with a few splits, very small brown stain with minute hole on p. 407/8; a very good, very well-preserved copy. A work very popular in its day, offering comfort but also instruction, or comfort usually in the form of instruction, and prayers, for women in whatever situations or tribulations they might experience in a very violent period of German history. It was obviously intended, and used, for devotion and meditation at home rather than in Church. In an informative blog for the University of Pennsylvania Dr Elisabeth Esser Braun, who had donated her copy of the 1708 edtion of this book to the university, refers also to a longer study by Ferdinand van Ingen, "Frauentugend und Tugendexempel . Zum Frauenspiegel des Hieronymus Ortelius und Philip von Zesens Biblischen Frauenportaets", in "Barocker Lust-Spiegel. Studien zur Literatur des Barock", (Amsterdam, 1984). We cannot ascertain whether our edition is the first to contain the additional poems by diverse authors, particularly Johannes Rist [known by some of his contemporaries as "Nordischer Apoll], but the title-page implies it is. The binding, with its 17th century-crafted silver-plated clasps and gauffered edges, is a delightful and uncommon survival. The engravings mostly show women of the Bible, whose lives and example inspire the separate chapters of the text.

Three volumes, Paris, 1781; xii, 391, 320, xvi, 456pp.; cont. light green paper-covered boards, spines simply decorated with gilt rules and bay-leaves, gilt meander rule to boards, yellow silk markers; spines faded & rubbed at head and tail, with loss of green paper, extremities also rubbed, including corners (mostly just the tips), small typographical bookplates of Otto A. Hirth, very small 19th. C. oval lib. stamp at foot of title-pages. A key study of the subject which influenced generation upon generation of antiquaries, scholars, and poets, augmented in this edition, including a long essay (c.250pp.) "Memoires historiques sur la Chasse".Some passages in this particular set have been whitened with chalk, making them a little harder to read but not illegible; we could have had these chalk marks removed but, we surmise that they may have been made in preparing a new edition of the work, and did not wish to detract from its historical and bibliographical value. Schnorr took over six of his own designs for his Nibelungen frescoes in the new Muenchener Residenz for this work (hence the printed dedication to King Ludwig of Bavaria) and added new designs and decorations: all are strongly in the tradition established by Peter von Cornelius in a series of etchings published in 1817. This work is widely celebrated, and features in major exhibitions on German illustration of the period, including "Die Kunst der Illustration", Wolfenbuettel, 1986-7, No. 24 (p.59 of the catalogue).
