DIBDIN, THOMAS FROGNAL
Typographical Antiquities
0. or, the History of Printing in England, Scotland and Ireland: containing Memoirs of our Ancient Authors, and a Register of the Books printed by them. Begun by the late Joseph Ames .. considerably augmented by William Herbert .. and now greatly enlarged, with copious notes, and illustrated with appropriate engravings .. by the Rev. Thomas Frognall Dibdin. Four volumes, London, 1810 ,1812, 1819; 4to; each volume c. 400 - 600 pp. many titles or headings printed in red, with 14 mezzotint plates, 23 plates, and numerous facsimiles and illustrations; contemporary speckled calf, spines gilt in compartments, with five raised bands and double labels of a paler brown morocco, marbled edges and end-papers; some slight browning or spotting to the plates, which are on heavier paper, and some offsetting,; there is a chip, with loss, at the head of the spine of Volume II, the rear board of Volume IV is detached, otherwise a few short splits to joints. A very handsome and unusually bound set of this classic, though unfinished, celebration of early British printing and publishing, its authors and its collectors, itself a monument to the finest English printing and book illustration of its period. This set once belonged to the Hamburg publisher, bookseller and auctioneer Ernst Hauswedell (Lot 148 in his sale "Handbuecher eines Sammlers" , 24th November 1976). We do not know its earlier provenance. (This is a heavy item, in four quarto volumes, for which our normal postage terms will need to be varied).

FIELDING, HENRY (AND OTHERS)
Examples of the Interposition of Providence
. in the Detection and Punishment of Murder .. with an Introduction and Conclusion both written by Henry Fielding Esq. London, for A. Millar, 1752; 12mo (c. 12.5 x 7.5}; iv, 94pp.; publisher's original unlettered sheep; joints worn, head of spine chipped. Very good copy. The work was intended to reduce and preempt the crime of murder by demonstrating that guilt can't be kept secret and that through the workings of Providence truth will out and guilt be revealed. It draws on various sources, including Nathaniel Wanley's "Wonders of the Little World" (1677), Thomas Beard's "The Theatre of God's Judgments" (1597), and John Reynolds' "The Triumph of God's Revenge..".(1635). and the compression of the narratives, though thought to have been presided over by Henry Fielding, may be by Sarah Fielding or William Young, Henry Fielding's authorship being confined as the title-page states to the introduction and conclusion. The litle work or compendium was priced at "Bound one Shilling, or Ten Shillings a Dozen to those who give them away". It is now very rare.

0. 1914. Berlin, Paul Cassirer, 1914. small folio; xxiv, 76 plates [with 77 illustrations], each preceded by a page of caption; publisher's printed wrappers; a few spots to edges, otherwise a very good copy. Apparently the first attempt ever to unite the scattered oeuvre of this Italian baroque master, reprinting Ratti's LIfe of Magnasco [in Italian] in the prefatory material.

Paris, Didier, 1861; iv, 424 pp.; contemporary morocco-backed marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt with raised bands; corners a little worn, short, barely visible split to front joint, edges minimally rubbed, slight foxing, mostly confined to first few pages and last gatherings. Signed presentation copy of the first edition of this collection of papers, some of which date back as far as the eighteen-twenties. The three essays which follow the addresses are on "Encyclopédie" - 58 pages including a well-researched historical bibliography of encyclopedias published in Europe - "Abrégé", and "Élections" (on political elections, c. 40 pp.). This copy was inscribed, signed and given as a birthday present to the English woman of letters Charlotte Mary Yonge. author of family and historical novels and of children's books, popular educator, and devout Anglican. It's possible that the blue silk bookmark, now at page 223, the beginning of an address to the "Société Biblique Protestante" on 30th April 1851, was left there by her or by the author. Several further addresses concern religious instruction or education. A very attractive association copy, which documents an Anglo-French friendship, and is itself a document of French history as well as of Victorian history.

HAZLITT, WILLIAM,
The Life of Napoleon Buonaparte.
0. 1834. London: Printed for Hunt and Clarke, York Street, Covent Garden. 1834; 535, 572, [iv] pp.; half buckram over blue paper-covered boards in style of the original binding (which was brown pebble-grain cloth over blue paper-covered boards), original spine with printed paper label mounted. An excessively rare and apparently unrecorded re-issue or re-printing of Volumes I and II of Hazlitt's "Life of Napoleon" by its original publisher. The title-page, at least, was newly-printed, and like the original printed label on the spine [preserved in this copy] implies the contents comprise a complete text of the biography: there is no mention of "Vol.I" on the title-page, no separately-printed title-page for Volume II, and no suggestion the work might comprise further volumes; the signatures to the separate gatherings, however, mostly bear the indication "Vol. I" or "Vol. II". These first two volumes of the work were first published in 1828, by Hunt and Clarke; but the firm went bankrupt, and Hazlitt himself lost two hundred pounds over its publication. New publishers, Effingham Wilson with Chapman & Hall, published Volumes III and IV in 1830, re-issuing Volumes I & II with new title-pages, giving their own imprint. The copy offered here, however, was apparently marketed four years subsequently by the original publisher and from the old address. The last four pages consist of Hunt and Clarke's advertisements, beginning with Hazlitt's "Notes of a Journey Through France and Italy" and ending with Hone's edition of Strutt's "Sports and Pastimes" ["on the 1st of February .. to prevent disappointment, orders for the large paper edition are particularly requested as early as possible."] Hone's "Sports and Pastimes" came out in 1830, so it seems safe to assume that these four pages of advertisements also date back to the year of the bankruptcy. It remains a mystery for whose benefit this volume was published, with its deceptive title-page suggesting it was the complete work, in one volume; and why it should be so rare.

JOSEPHUS, FLAVIUS,
Historien Und Buecher
0. 1571.. vom juedischen Krieg .. alles aus dem urspruenglichen Griechischen Exemplar .. verteutscht. Two parts in one volume, Frankfurt, 1571; folio; [5ll] including engraved title-page, [1l.] [blank], 348 ll, with 83 large wood-cut illustrations, + 177 ll. with 14 wood-cut illustrations [making 97 woodcuts in all], final leaf with colophon & large printer's device of Georg Raben/und Weygand Hanen Erben; contemporary pigskin dated 1572, decorative brass bosses and holders for the now-lost metal clasps; the pigskin of the front hinge cracked but holding firmly, slanting crack in the skin on the front board, with slight loss of surface, another small surface hole the size of a small coin on front board; pale library stamp on front blank and verso of last page, scattered marginal library stamps (very small)); contents lightly browned, with a stabhole in c. 80 leaves which affectsa few letters. The front board - somewhat darkened - bears the title in capitals, and the date 1572 in a once dyed or painted central panel; the blind-stamped ornament of the boards is clearer on the brighter rear board: it includes panels of acorns, fleurs-de-lys, and small historical portraits. This copy is made particularly interesting by a contemporary full-page manuscript ex-libris in black, red, yellow, and silver with a full-page armorial crest and the name "Johan Tobing her Leonardes Son" painted directly on to the front paste-down. The name of a much later English owner is written neatly in small letters above, in the top margin. The book later passed to Stoke-on-Trent Public Library, who consigned it with other books to auction in 2006. Text in German.

JUNG-STILLING, JOHANN HEINRICH,
Heinrich Stillings Jugend.
0. 1780. Eine wahrhafte Geschichte.134pp.; WITH: Heinrich Stillings Juenglings-Jahre.188pp.; AND: Heinrich Stillings Wanderschaft. 176pp.; THREE WORKS IN ONE VOLUME, Frankfurt und Leipzig, 1780; with a few wood-cut fleurons and tail-pieces; contemporary German half calf, all edges red; binding rubbed,, particularly at corners, small chip at head of spine, only half of the black leather lettering-piece on spine present, roughly six opening pages of the first work a little embrowned and spotted, otherwise however internally fresh. The first three parts of an autobiographical novel, and all that had appeared to date, although Jung-Stilling was to continue the narrative with "Häusliches Leben" [1789], "Lehrjahre" [1804], and "Alter" [1817]. The absence of a publisher's name and of the phrase "Mit .. Privileg" suggests this edition is a "Raubdruck". a pirate edition which was cashing in on the work's great popularity. Any 18th Century edition, however, is now scarce.

KANNENGIESZER, E.H.G.,
Sammlung
0. 1821. der in der Koeniglich Grosz= Britannisch= Hannoverschen Gerichten ueblichen Eidesformeln zum Gebrauch fuer Aemter, Stadtobrigkeiten, adeliche= auch Garnison= und Regiments=Gerichte. Dritte verbesserte und sehr vermehrte Ausgabe. Hannover, 1821; 104 pp.; contemporary marbled boards, spine unlettered; cont. name on front blank. Sixteen leaves of contemporary laid paper have been bound in by the first owner, with four further oaths of the same period entered in manuscript, the rest blank. A very rare handbook intended for the use of the judiciary and 'local government' civil servants in the kingdom of Hanover, and also for military trials and court martials, gathered out of the manifold legal and bureaucratic publications in which they were originally to be sought for when needed. Solemnly swearing to carrry out one's duties responsibly appears to have been a condition for being engaged for or appointed to a task or office, and the oaths are often so detailed as to provide unusually real accounts, effectively full job descriptions, of the duties of such village officers as the nightwatchman, the warden of bridges, the tax-gatherer, the turf-moor warden, the "Vogt", the midwife, and so on. The medical profession, doctors, surgeons, apothecaries are equally required to swear specific oaths to carry out their duties responsibly, as is almost anybody serving the public. Ten pages are devoted to "Der Juden-Eid", and revisions thereto; as far as we understand, the authorities seem to be wrestling with the complexity of requiring of a Jewish subject a binding oath, while not expecting him to recognise his God in the Christian God [parts of this text have scattered underlining in contemporary black ink].
