Les Aventures de Maitre Tetu
0. et de Miss Docile. Conte Allegorique. Traduit de l'Anglais pour l'instruction de la Jeunesse. Paris: Delarue,& Lille: Castiaux, n.d. [c. 1820?]; oblong 16mo (c. 12.5 x 11 cm).; 63 pp. with frontispiece and seven plates, all wood-cuts, coloured by hand; publisher's printed boards, title within an decorative border on front, illustration within same border on rear board; lacking spine, boards marked and a little darkened, original owner's name on half-title, text lightly spotted. An extremely rare French children's book, printed in Lille, an allegorical moral purportedly based on an English original. Experts have been consulted in vain to find an English book of which this could be a version, but it could nevertheless have been taken from an English source which was part of a larger collection of moral tales. The wood-cuts (hand-coloured as issued) are bold and very good. Two bear the initials C.S.J. in the block. The allegory itself shows Master Headstrong led astray by letting himself be led by Passion, but finally finding the path to Virtue and Religion through the good offices of Reason.

Fairy Tales, Selected from the Best Authors.
0. 1788. [Volume I]. London, Printed for W. Lane, Leadenhall Street,,1788; 12mo; [vi], 288pp..; contemporary sheep, spine gilt-ruled, red lettering-piece; front joint split, front board held only by its strings, loss of leather of spine all along the split in the joint;, boards slightly scuffed and marked; lacks frontispiece and [2] plates, top half of second leaf of prelims missing,, first gathering loose, corners of outer margins at the top of c. 20 pages cut round at some point,; contemporary owner's names on front paste-down, with 20th century bookplate super-imposed . Lane's "Tales of the Fairies" is very rare, even for 18th century fairy tale editions. Our copy is offered with all its faults because it is so rarely met with, but it has been tampered with by a former owner who wanted to conceal the fact that it was only the first of two volumes and that it had already lost its copper-plates: words on the title-page have been gently rubbed out - presumably "Adorned with plates" and "Volume I" - and the words "of the first" have been rubbed out at the bottom of the last page, so it no longer reads "End of the first Volume"; presumably part of leaf [ii] of the prelims - the contents leaf - was removed for the same reason. The contents are otherwise complete, and comprise; The Introduction. History of the Princess Hebe and the Fairy Anguiletta. Hitory of the Royal Ram or the Wishes. History of Graciosa and Percinet. History of Finetta. History of the White Cat. History of Princess Carpillona. History of the Pidgeon and Dove. History of the Yellow Dwarf.History of Young and Handsome.

[Zurich,] gedruckt bei J.J.Ulrich, 1842; 4to; 8pp. with engraved plate, and large folding coloured lithograph; publisher's printed wrappers, printed within a decorative border; scattered light foxing and slight water-stain to lower margin of text and of the plain plate. A monograph on the 12th Century Cistercian monastery at Kappel, but primarily on its contemporary and later connections with the von Eschenbachs and the vicissitudes of that family, including under the names of Schnabelburg or Schwarzenberg. The uncoloured plate is a copper-engraved view of the church by Hegi, The folding lithograph, finely coloured by hand, illustrates the first page of this monograph, according to which the early medieval church was originally famous for its over 60 stained or painted glass windows, though only six survived to the time of this publication. The plate shows all nine panels of a single window, at its centre the Crucifixion.

Young Englands Little Library.
0. 1844. A Collection of Original Tales for Children, in Prose and Verse. By Eminent Authors. London, Wm. S. Orr & Co. Paternoster Row, 1844; small 4to; twentieth century binder's cloth, with gilt title "Little Library"; ink smudge to extreme outer edge of c. 30 pages, three or four very short marginal tears. The volume consists of eleven parts, which were also available to buy separately, of 24 to 32 pages, with numerous lithographic plates, most of which are lightly spotted. After the title-page, printed in red and black, and the frontispiece full-length portrait of "the Editor", there is an introduction and a contents leaf, which has been annotated in light pencil giving references in the Osborne Collection catalogue for such individual works present here as are listed there. The contents are: Adam the Gardener [abridged from Charles Cowden Clarke]; The Princess Narina [also atributed to Clarke]; Number One [Mrs S.C.Hall]; Perseverance [Clarke]; The Curate's Favourite Scholar [Mary Howitt]; The Remarkable Nigger and three more verse tales [F.W.N.Bailey]; Little Chatterbox [Mrs S.C.Hall]; Picture of the Virgin [Mary Howitt]; Savoyard Boy and his Sister [J.D.Haas, after Hermann Kletke]; Adventures of Jack Holyday [Albert Smith]; Glory [Thomas Gaspey]. The majority of the plates seem to be by John Absalon. The pagination at the end of three of the stories is erratic, or rather erroneous, but the texts are complete. Two of the verse-tales by F.W.N.Bailey are so overtly racist that it's hard to imagine how they would have appealed to the same readership as Clarke or Howitt, but this is perhaps a lesson this compilation inadvertently teaches.

CLERK, THOMAS,
The Works of William Hogarth
0. 1821. (Including "The Analysis of Beauty"), elucidated by Descriptions Critical, Moral, and Historical .. to which is prefixed Some Account of his Life. Two volumes, London, R.Scholey, 1821; vi, [vi], 203, [iv], 96pp. + " The Analysis of Beauty" with unnumbered pages, with title-page vignettes and 86 plates; nineteenth-century half deep blue morocco over blue marbled boards, blue marbled endpapers, rebacked with matching buckram; slight rubbing to extremities of the boards and one or two small chips, marginal loss to Plate IX, but a well-bound set, professionally repaired, the contents clean. One of several handbooks to the engraved versions of Hogarth's paintings which appeared after his lifetime. Plates 54 and 55 have not been bound in, and the letterpress for "Before and After" implies they may have been deliberately omitted; there is no plate 84, but this is probably not called for, as the letterpress at this point directs the reader to the title-page vignette for the illustration; the numeration of the plates is eccentric, with plates one would expect in the first volume bound [correctly] in the second, but the plates are otherwise complete. The pages of "The Analysis of Beauty" are unnumbered, but page numbers are given in the margins of the text. apparently referring to the pagination of the first edition. This is a very interesting association copy. The front paste-down of each volume bears a decorative bookplate by Provost Blondel (Paris) of a flowery wreath with interwined initials we have not deciphered and the motto "Jamais Cesder". Inscriptions on the bookplates show that the book once belonged to the English author W.Somerset Maugham, and that he gave it as a present to the American writer Glenway Wescott. Wescott, a friend of Katherine Anne Porter and Thornton Wilder as well as of Maugham, was a widely read and admired novelist in the first half of the twentieth century, and lived in Paris for much of his life. He presented this set to the art historian Edgar Wind, who had fled Germany and had posts in the United States in the 1940s (he later became the first Professor of the History of Art at Oxford.) The inscriptions, all written in ink in the margins of the ex-libris, read: "Edgar Wind ex dono Glenway Wescott ex dono W.Somerset Maugham" and "with G.W.'s affection to E.W. - and thanks for his analyses of the spring of 1942 -".

A COMPLETE SET, comprising 19 volumes, all first editions, and in the ORIGINAL WRAPPERS or original flexible cloth, London, Tilt & Bogue [later David Bogue], 1835 - 1853. Over the 19 years of its publication, the Comic Almanac, enjoyed various editors, including the pseudonymous "Rigdum Funnidos", Henry Mayhew, and Robert B. Brough, and experienced a reduction in format from octavo to duodecimo in the years 1848 and 1849. The stiff paper wrappers with designs by Cruikshank finally gave way in 1850 to stiff gilt-decorated cloth-covered wrappers. What never changed was the inclusion of twelve etched plates by George Cruikshank in each issue, as well as black-and-white illustrations in the text by various hands. Larger folding frontispieces, also by Cruikshank, etched and finely coloured by hand, were added from the year 1850. The etchings for "The Comic Almanac" reflect his close observation of Victorian society and those for the earlier issues are considered some of his best work. The spines of the first seven volumes are worn, with a little loss, particularly at head and foot, though the lettering is largely present; the rear wrapper of the 1840 volume is loose; the next six volumes have been very neatly, professionally rebacked using old material, either paper or fine-grained cloth, and match the plain spines of the last volumes' original cloth. There are two or three contemporary ownership entries, and a few pencil entries for 1843. The contents are in good condition, though there is slight spotting and browning to the edges of the plates from 1843 to 1847. It is very rarely that a complete series in the original ephemeral bindings is offered.
