Conditie: Good, Contemporary mottled sheep with spine gilt, four raised band, rubbed, inscription and ex libris by the fourth Conde de Mafra, another earlier inscription (1818) on blank page, a few inscription in (colour)pencil on titelpage and another inscription on page 3 (also in colourpencil) dated 1928. With a titlepage and two folding engraving, Small tears to folds in the blank margin (not touching the images), Second foldout engraving reinforced at the back. With direction to binder leaf at the end. Book about a mock battle between cats and dogs in the town of Mafra, Portugal. The cats symbolize women and the dogs man. The second plate shows an epic battle between cats and dogs with the famous palace of Mafra in the background. The first foldout shows the interior of a house where a cat and dog are fighting whilst two men try to seperate them.

With 424 beautifull illustrations of various plants and fruits, not only for medical use but also illustrations of melon, pineapple, bannana, etc. by Turpin, one of the top French illustrators of botanical subjects at the time.

Decorated with coloured inlaid marocco pieces resembling flowers on front and spine of binding. Gilt detailt. Two green shields on spine with gilt letters stating both author and title. Signed by binder on lower turn-in in the back. Original covers (including spine) bound in. Topedge pages gilt. Marbled endpapers. With colour illustrations by Edelmann, including two frontispieces in colour. With slipcase which shows some wear. In the back there is an extra suite in black and white of all illustrations. This is number 741 of 934 copies printed on papier de Rives. Noteworthy is that the suite of black and white illustrations is not mentioned for this edition (though it is mentioned for the 21 copies printed on Hollande). I found only one copy elsewhere printed on Rives which mentions the suite, other copies do not mention it (and do not contain the suite?). Beautiful copy in a fine binding.
