, [Miezaru Te] The Invisible Hand.
[Miezaru Te] The Invisible Hand.
Tokyo, Shunkodo 1921 (Taisho 10). Octavo publisher's colour colour illustrated wrapper; four photo illustrations on two plates. Stab holes indicating this had been in some outer binding; natural browning of the paper; an outstanding copy.
¶ A pulpish film edition in Japanese translation of the 1920 Vitagraph serial thriller The Invisible Hand starring the then Latin idol Antonio Moreno. The serial was not, despite what some authorities will tell you, a western. The film itself is lost and from what I can figure out not much more than production credits and a list of chapter headings survives in English. This book is near as lost, I can't find any record of another copy. By the mid fifties Moreno was a support in Creature from the Black Lagoon and an Indian chief in Saskatchewan.

[MARRYAT, Captain Frederick].
Mr Midshipman Easy.
London, Saunders & Otley 1836. Three volumes octavo, untrimmed in quarter roan and marbled boards (discreetly rebacked preserving the original spines). A rather good, attractive set; with half titles and publisher's adverts at the end of volumes two and three. In cloth chemises and slipcase labelled in gilt on a ship's wheel shaped label.

, Ned Nimble Amongst the Bushrangers of Australia.
Ned Nimble Amongst the Bushrangers of Australia.
London, Edwin J. Brett [188-?]. Two volumes large octavo, bound together in a modern wrapper with a copy of a cover mounted; original illustrated wrappers bound in. 276pp, 23 full page illustrations. Some repairs and splodges to the wrappers; natural browning of the paper in the first volume; still, rather good.
¶ Ned Nimble's Australian romp appeared in the 'Boys of England' in 1882 and in parts and collected editions in two versions. This is the first, coming out of the Boys of England offices. The other comes out of Harkaway House, a name change made in the early nineties. The second version came in, I think, 17 weekly parts adding up to 264 pages. The wrappers are sensibly recycled with part numbers and price at the top (parts 28 and 30, price 4d) and volume numbers and new price stamped at the bottom (Nimble Series Vol 9 and 10; price one shilling). And the volumes are recycled from unsold parts with the original stab marks visible. I don't get how they could have spun this out to 30 parts, there are clearly 23. Trove finds two copies of the second version and one of this. But the covers of that one have different Nimble series volume numbers. Confused? Bored?

, New of Pom and Song The English and Japanese. [Eiwa Taiyaku Shintai Undoka].
New of Pom and Song The English and Japanese. [Eiwa Taiyaku Shintai Undoka].
Tokyo, 1887 [Meiji 20]. Small octavo publisher's illustrated wrapper; [2],32,[2]pp. A bit used, rather good copy for such a vulnerable thing. A christmas gift inscription on the front to 'Father' dated Dec 16, 1887.
¶ A pioneering Japanese foray into English poetry and poetry in English which I can't find anywhere but the National Diet Library. Elsewhere I found two references to this. One is Basil Chamberlain's 'Things Japanese', the other 'Japan for a Week' by Alexander M. Thompson who clearly never saw this booklet but, misreading Chamberlain, requotes a poem from 'Things Japanese' which isn't in this. Chamberlain, in the chapter 'English as She is Japped' quotes two poems without explicitly stating they are from this; they aren't. Did he see the book? What is here is a mix of what seem to be poems by English and Japanese writers, things that are more aphorisms and morals than poems and an intriguing excerpt from Tennyson's Charge of the Light Brigade. This isn't a production for western tourists or export of the pretty sort that became popular through the 1890's. This is a modest first step of the Japanese setting out - as they did with all things western - to learn, encompass and digest a new form.

Osaka, Enomoto 1917 (Taisho 6). 19x13cm publisher's colour illustrated wrapper; 10pp including wrapper, seven full page colour illustrations. Expected browning of the paper, short marginal tear and a nibble from the front wrapper; pretty good for one of these cheap booklets.

¶ Short comic strip gags printed in that style that makes you reach for your 3D glasses. Maybe not the finest printing but these akahons (red books) - cheap and gaudy - do manage to catch the thrill of being alive in a time when everything is fun. Exhibition - Launceston 1891., Official Record of the Tasmanian International Exhibition - held at Launceston, 1891-92.
Exhibition - Launceston 1891.
Official Record of the Tasmanian International Exhibition - held at Launceston, 1891-92.
Printed at the Launceston Examiner Office 1893. Octavo publisher's decorated cloth (a bit marked); viii,137pp, frontispiece. Quite a good copy with John Chapman's bookplate.
¶ I confess I knew nothing of Tasmania's first international exhibition until recently, which says more about my willful blindness and the scarcity of the official catalogue and record than the exhibition itself. It was pretty big, with exhibitors from Britain, a few European countries and North America, and something close to twice the population of Tasmania visited. This was one of Jules Joubert's successes. Joubert, who continually careered between triumph and disgrace, cut his exhibition teeth with the Sydney agricultural shows and moved on to international exhibitions in the mid seventies. After disgrace with the 1879 Sydney exhibition he became a travelling gun for hire, organising exhibitions in Perth, Calcutta, Melbourne, New Zealand and Tasmania - this one and the 1894 Hobart exhibition. This includes a list of the award winners.

Official Catalogue of the New Zealand Industrial Exhibition, 1865.
Dunedin, for the Commissioners 1865. Octavo publisher's printed wrappers (a bit marked and frayed); 156,viii + 20 pages of adverts, folding plan. A pencil list of plants on the back wrapper; used but most acceptable.
¶ New Zealand's first international exhibition, well before any other in this part of the world. Admittedly not a lot came from elsewhere apart from Tasmania and Britain but come they did. Tasmania sent more than all the other colonies combined.

[GUERINEAU DE SAINT-PERAVI, J.N.M.].
L'Optique Chinois, Traduit de l'Egyptien.
A Londres [Paris], Rey 1765. Octavo contemporary mottled calf (tips worn, front hinge cracked but holding); iv,176;[2],263pp. In two parts, each with a title page.
¶ Though I've seen this referred to as a reprint of the more elaborately titled 'L'Optique, ou le Chinois a Memphis ..." (1763) I'd be willing to bet that these are the first edition sheets with new title pages. I'll bet this book (and before you take the bet be aware that all the mistakes in pagination are identical). The Chinese traveller in the west is a neat enough conjunction of a number of fashions and Guerineau has tacked together a few in this oriental imaginary voyage cum utopian social satire.

, Papers on Mechanics, published by the Society of Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce. Vol. I. 1810 - 1843.
Papers on Mechanics, published by the Society of Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce. Vol. I. 1810 - 1843.
London c1811-43. Thick octavo publisher's cloth backed boards (neatly recased), printed paper spine label; title and contents leaves, some 680 pages and 115 engraved plates (some double page or folding). Spotting of some plates but a rather good copy.
¶ "Only one hundred copies selected" according to the title page. This bit of economic housekeeping on the part of the society, using up their stock of journals, gives us a handy compendium of 120 papers on a plethora of subjects, from the odd and mundane to some quite important advances in subects like life-saving and safety, scientific instruments and timekeepers, shipbuilding, fire escapes, and all manner of machines. Despite the title's claim the papers stop in the early 1820's. Other compilations were produced, one on chemistry, one on trade and the colonies, and maybe one on manufactures and one on agriculture (the descriptions I can find for these are unclear) but all seem to be rare.

, Prison Administration in South Africa.
Prison Administration in South Africa.
Department of Foreign Affairs [1969]. Quarto, excellent in publisher's gilt stamped limp leatherette; [6],46pp and numerous photo illustrations (some colour).
¶ The Prime Minister's copy, stamped "B.J. Vorster" on the front cover, of this model for beleaguered governments. Significant here is that it was only the South African Foreign Department, not those directly responsible for prisons, that felt the need to respond to growing international condemnation. The United Nations resolution of 1968 condemned South Africa so this report was delivered to the United Nations with a defiant letter stating that the UN had no competence to criticise prison management (cf Horrell; Survey of Race Relations in South Africa 1969). One section addresses the "attempts to discredit the South African prison system" and implicit in the photographs of healthy young black African men being taught trades and cared for by older and wiser white men in clean modern facilities is that any complaint by them would be unforgivable ingratitude. They must be better off since leaving their slums and shanties. Vorster had been the Minister for Justice and for Police and Prisons until his elevation to Prime Minister in 1966 so it must have been doubly satisfying to see his legacy blossoming under the care of his successor, Pelser.

[STIEBER, Wilhelm]., Die Prostitution in Berlin und ihre Opfer.
[STIEBER, Wilhelm].
Die Prostitution in Berlin und ihre Opfer.
Berlin, Hofmann 1846. Octavo contemporary (publisher's?) quarter cloth and boards (worn around the edges but solid and decent); [6],210pp. Extensive but gentle and neat pencilling, easily removed by anyone more patient than I am.
¶ Second, unchanged edition, first published in the same year. A fairly remarkable book. Stieber is best known as police chief and spy (he claimed to have infiltrated Marx's house in London and filched the membership list) but this is an early work - and fairly revolutionary approach to prostitution, crime and their social effects. Leaving aside the influence Stieber had on the subsequent theories and practice of social scientists, criminologists, police, psychologists, and government, this is an extensive and personal document. The women are named, by their nicknames at least and often by their real first name, and in many cases we get a description and some history. Thus we learn about Judenbertha, or Rebecca, one of few Jewish prostitutes; and Splinter auch Splitter; and Schweinekreuz; and Scottish Marie, and The Ships Captain, and Unfaithful Lette; and many more.
