Paris: Editions du Museum, 1943-1948. First edition. Pp. (fascicle II): (1), 63-230; 37 text-figures (mostly geological diagrams), very large folding color geologic map with onion skin overlay, 11 full page black-and-white photo-plates of human skulls, ethnographic scenes, geological scenes/sections and fossil Mollusca + Pp. (fascicle III): 231-559; 90 text-figures (mostly line-drawings of fossils), 40 full page black-and-white photo-plates of vertebrate fossils. Publisher's original light green printed wrappers + original dark gray printed wrappers, 4to. From the series: Memoires du Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, nouv. ser., Tome 1, Fascicle II (Premiere Parte - Geologie) and Fascicle III (Deuxieme Parte - Paleontologie). In 1932 and 1933, Camille Arambourg and colleagues undertook a geological and paleontological survey of the Lake Rudolf Basin (now Lake Turkana Basin) in Kenya and Omo River Basin in Ethiopia. These volumes, published in 1943 and 1948, present a comprehensive geological survey of the area explored with a large-scale color geological map and a detailed anatomical analysis of vertebrate fossils collected in the 1932-1933 surveys. These fossils were important for the biostratigraphic dating of the vertebrate fauna that was later associated with the early hominins discovered in the Turkana and Omo Basins during the years 1967 to 1980. The geological and paleontological sections of these monographs are individually numbered pages 1 - 406; it is the complete work. In addition, fascicle II also contains two other significant papers ""Contribution a l'anthropologie de l'Afrique orientale: Les Tourkana et les Kikouyou"" by P. Lester and ""Mollusques fossiles et subfossiles du Bassin du Lac Rodolphe"" by J. Roger. No ownership marks and no signs of use. Archer, John
The Behavioural Biology of Aggression.
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1998. First edition. Pp. x, (1), 257; some text-figures and diagrams. Original dark red pictorial stiff wrappers, 8vo (8.8 x 5.9 inches). The purpose of this book is to elucidate the general principles underlying animal aggression. Aggressive encounters occur even in very simple organisms, and are at the roots of human conflict. A general framework is provided by dividing forms of aggression according to their function - protection of the individual, offspring defense and competition. Within each functional group, the principles underlying the variety of aggressive behavior in different species, the sexes and different life-cycle stages, are considered, and this is followed by a discussion of the mechanisms through which animals achieve the various functional ends. Aggression is viewed as one possible solution to a recurrent set of problems animals encounter in their natural environments. In any one case, the control and form of aggression are seen as the result of the interaction of past evolutionary environments, developmental influences, and current circumstances (from the rear cover). No ownership marks and no signs of use. A fine (new) copy..

Arnold, Marion (author and editor)
South African Botanical Art: Peeling back the petals (Collector's edition of 100 numbered copies, this is copy no. 1 presented to 'The Publisher' by the author)
Vlaeberg, South Africa: Fernwood Press, 2001. Limited edition. Pp. (1, limitation), (5), 6-216; color frontispiece of Cyrtanthus flammosus, 131 color plates of fine botanical art. One half dark green textured morocco leather, spine with five raised bands, lettered in gilt in one compartment and with a gilt leave in another, over gray cloth boards with central gilt flower, endpapers with central embossed leaf design, in gray cloth-covered slipcase bordered in dark green morocco at the head and foot of the slipcase, 4to (300 x 230mm). The limitations page reads: Collectors' Edition. A special edition limited to 100 copies. This volume is number 1 presented to Fernwood Press (Pty) Ltd signed by the author, Marion Arnold. She comments: 'Remarkable images of plants created by the most talented of botanical artists, are housed in store rooms of botanical institutes and museums. Yet the oil paintings, etchings and watercolors of 'fine' artists - depicting the same plants - are located in art galleries. Why are plant portraits classified differently, and kept apart? Is plant imagery to do with science, or with art? Do the two 'kinds' of art ever meet? This unique and ground-breaking book metaphorically 'peels back the petals' to explore southern African plant portraiture and discovers the meanings ascribed to the genres of 'botanical art' and 'flower painting'. Well known for their botanical and art history contributions, authors Marion Arnold, Peter Goldblatt, John Manning, John Rourke and Dee Snijman examine plant portraiture in southern Africa over several centuries. They provide engrossing and sometimes unique revelations on a broad spectrum of issues, including species 'discovery', insect pollination, biological classification, specimen collection, plant naming, portraiture, and the manner and style of artistic representation. The texts are liberally illustrated by works of some of the countless travelers, botanists an artists who have so passionately and meticulously recorded South Africa's rich floral heritage.' Asher, Robert J. and Müller, Johannes (editors)
From Clone to Bone: The Synergy of Morphological and Molecular Tools in Palaeobiology
New York: Cambridge University Press, 2012. First edition. Pp. x, 387; numerous black-and-white photos, line-drawings, graphs and maps, 16-page color section of photos and diagrams at center of book (p. 182). Pictorial color laminated boards (hardcover), lg 8vo. This is the hardcover first edition. Since the 1980s, a renewed understanding of molecular development has afforded an unprecedented level of knowledge of the mechanisms by which phenotype in animals and plants has evolved. In this volume, top scientists in these fields provide perspectives on how molecular data in biology help to elucidate key questions in estimating paleontological divergence and in understanding the mechanisms behind phenotypic evolution. Paleobiological questions such as genome size, digit homologies, genetic control cascades behind phenotype, estimates of vertebrate divergence dates, and rates of morphological evolution are addressed, with a special emphasis on how molecular biology can inform paleontology, directly and indirectly, to better understand life's past. Highlighting a significant shift towards interdisciplinary collaboration, this is a valuable resource for students and researchers interested in the integration of organismal and molecular biology. Here is one review of this volume: 'Fundamental questions in biology, such as the origin of form and the tree of life, were major concerns for the leading biologists of the nineteenth century, but those researchers lacked the research tools to test their ideas. This book highlights the remarkable synergies between molecular biologists, developmental biologists, and paleobiologists in providing new understanding. Asher and Müller have assembled an excellent set of chapters on these themes, and these provide incisive introductions to an important interdisciplinary field' (Michael J. Benton - University of Bristol) (from the back cover). No ownership marks. A fine (new) copy..
