WRIGGLESWORTH, LINDA; IN ASSOCIATION WITH MYERS, MYRNA
Where Antique Korean Textiles Meet Contemporary Art
Linda Wriggleworth Ltd. London. 1997. Soft cover. Book, English text; 18.5 x 18.8 cm; 0.495 Kg; 59 loose leaf cards with: text by Linda Wrigglesworth; and 46 colour plates, each with caption and text; Asian textile dealer catalogue; Used with signs of wear. The outside edges are slightly bent. The cards are good condition.; “I have been struck by the rarity of these textiles, sourcing most of my pieces in Korea (.). Korea, like Japan, was a very closed society and pieces were never brought out of Korea by Western travellers in the same quantities as they were from China. Korean textiles also had a great sentimental value, being treasured by the families who owned them. I (.) am delighted to have found as my other source, Myrna Myers of Paris who with her husband Sam have collected Korean textiles for many years. Their collection is proudly part of this exhibition. Korean costume and textiles are a subject worthy of recognition in the world’s collection today. Rank badges are almost impossible to find, costumes even more so. Our collection of badges is indeed one of the largest on the open market.” excerpt from the text accompanying the catalogue by Linda Wrigglesworth. Good.

AYERS, JOHN
The Baur Collection, Geneva: Japanese Ceramics
Collections Baur, Genčve. 1982, 1st Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English and French text.; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket in slipcase); 24 x 30 cm; 1.6 Kg; 240 pages with colour and black and white illustrations throughout.; ISBN: 2-88031-004-X.; Limited edition of 1600 copies, of which this is 614.; Used book in very good condition. Looks as new. Minor signs of wear on the slipcase.; "Among the 1932 acquisitions Mr. Baur restricted the choice partly to enamelled porcelains from Arita kilns and from Nabeshima, which found ready favour among Western collectors, adding also various later, nineteenth century porcelain wares which included in particular examples of Hirado, Kameyama and Kutani; and besides these he also sent a variety of enamelled pottery belonging to the Kyoto tradition, such as Kiyomizu, Awata and Banko. In 1933, the mixture remained the same - as indeed it was to do during the following years down to 1939 - with pieces by other potters working in similar styles, such as Eiraku. Altogether these wares include many of unusual interest, and of types not widely available in Western collections. But in any assessment of the merits of the collection there can be little doubt that pride of place must be given to the group of early porcelains from Arita and above all, to those made for the princely house of Nabeshima, which both in quality and in numbers are hardly to be matched in any collection outside Japan itself." excerpt from the introduction by John Ayers, 1982. AYERS, JOHN
The Baur Collection, Geneva, Chinese Ceramics Volume Three: Monochrome-Glazed Porcelains of the Ch'Ing Dynasty
Collections Baur-Genčve, Switzerland. 1972, 1st Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English and French text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 24 x 29 cm; 2.3 Kg; 266 pages (introduction of 22 pages followed by an extensive catalogue with black and white and colour illustrations, each with caption).; OUT OF PRINT. LIMITED EDITION OF 1100 COPIES, 50 DELUXE COPIES IN LEATHER NUMBERED FROM I to L; 1000 STANDARD COPIES IN CLOTH NUMBERED FROM 1 to 1000 AND 50 COPIES RESERVED TO EMPLOYEES, OF WHICH THIS IS NUMBER 188.; Signs of wear in the dust jacket, with some yellowing on spine and some peeling of the laminated layer of the dust jacket on the top and bottom of the spine and also on the top of the front and back cover. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover. The outside text block shows some yellowing. The interior is in very good condition, apart from an old bookseller sticker glued to the front free endpaper and a tiny mark on the bottom right of one page (bent in the past).; When the Baur Collection museum opened in 1964, few people were aware that this private museum housed one of the most important collections of Chinese ceramics in Europe.; "In these last two volumes of the catalogue therefore our scope will be found limited almost entirely to wares produced during the reigns of K'ang Hsi (1662-1722), Yung Chźng (1723-1735), and Ch'in Lung (1736-1795). But few periods have been more prolific in invention: and to all lovers of Chinese porcelain these are familiar and evocative names calling to mind a succession of styles of unusual brilliance.(.) The present volume is devoted exclusively to the porcelains with monochrome glazes. (.) Their representation in the Baur Collection is one of quite exceptional richness and strengh. Shown here (with relatively few lacunae) is the full gamut of tones and colours that the 18th century potters of the Ching-tź-chźn were able to devise, while some of the rarest and most prized effects are present in generous measure. Outstanding among the latter are the "peachbloom" pinks, pale "clair-de-lune" blues and much favoured soft celadon greens, the development of which seems to belong especially to the period about 1715-1745. This part of the collection may therefore be said to offer much of unusual value both to the student, and to the casual visitor." excerpt from the introduction by John Ayers, Keeper at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1972. The exterior of the slipcase show signs of wear, and is worn at the top right corner. The interior of both volumes looks as new. Includes the pictorial paper wrapped around the slipcase, which has tears on the bottom and top.; Catalogue from the exhibition at the Hong Kong Museum of Art of 163 objects, the majority are products of the imperial kilns of Jingdezhen.; "The Hong Kong Museum of Art is proud to present an exhibition of pieces selected from the Tianminlou Collection of Chinese porcelain, a collection that has been assembled over the last four decades with meticulous care and discriminating taste. The exhibition features sixty-five pieces of blue and white, fifty-four pieces of polychrome and forty-four pieces of monochrome, totalling one hundred and sixty-tree objects dating from the 13th to the 18th century, they are the very best of Mr. Ko Shih Chao's acquisitions made in the last twenty years. A large majority of the pieces are products of the imperial kilns of Jingdezhen. They present a spectrum of techniques and styles, and tell the story to the constant striving by potters of Jingdezhen to refine the porcelain body, to master the intricacies of firing, and to invent new glazes from metals, a forth element provided by nature. It is an extraordinary chapter - and the climatic chapter - from the seven-thousand year saga of ceramics. Through the generosity of Mr. Ko Shih Chao the Tianminlou Collection has been put in public view. In addition to lending his collection for exhibition, Mr. Ko has also sponsored the publication of the catalogue that accompanies the exhibition. To the catalogue itself he has contributed many entries as well as one of the essays. The value of the catalogue has been enhanced by the essays contributed by Mr. John Ayers, Mr Julian Thompson and Mr Laurence Tam. It was Mr. Ko Shih Chao idea to include in the catalogue panoramic illustrations of a number of pieces so that the swept and subtlety of their designs can be fully appreciated. The catalogue is itself a visual delight thanks to the superb technique of the photographers: Mr Ogawa Tadahiro who did the panoramic photographs, Mr Wakisaka Susumu who took most of the colour transparencies for Volume I of the catalogue. It is composed almost entirely of the colourful porcelains made in China during the eighteenth century, and especially of the monochrome glazes that are renowned for their constant purity of tint, and for complementing perfectly the delicate symmetry of the forms they cover. The display of these wares in the newly designed gallery at l'Hermitage in Lausanne in January 2003 gave a brilliant public airing to a collection that was made solely for private pleasure, and bears witness to its owner's special appreciation of porcelain." excerpt from the introductory text "The Vergottis Collection of Chinese Porcelain at the Fondation de l'Hermitage in Lausanne" by John Ayers. Far Eastern Ceramics in the Victoria and Albert Museum
Sotheby Parke Bernet Publications by Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd, London. 1980, 2nd Edition. (ISBN: 0856670766). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 27.3 x 37.4 cm; 2,190 kg; 174 pages with colour illustrations Includes ribbon bookmark.; Used with wear marks throughout the dust jacket, and a tear on the top left side of the dust jacket front cover. Interior with minor signs of wear. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover. Good copy overall.; First published in 1975 by Kodansha Ltd, Tokyo, as Oriental Ceramics: The World Great Collections, Volume 6, Victoria and Albert Museum.; The collection of oriental ceramics at the Victoria and Albert Museum is among the world's finest. Numbering over nine thousand items which are for the most part on permanent view to the public, it owes much to a long line of benefactors and to such gifted curator historians as Bernard Rackham, W.B. Honey and Arthur Lane, each of whom contributed to its unique character. The elegant Chinese porcelains so abundantly represented in George Salting's great bequest of 1910 are balanced by a comprehensive range of earlier wares that was notably reinforced in the late '30s by the acquisition of the Eumorfopoulos Collection for the nation. Japanese, Korean and South-east Asian wares are also very fully represented. The selection of ninety-four masterpieces, magnificently photographed in colour, together with an extended series of black-and-white illustrations, here provide an overall view of the collection for the first time. The choice was made by John Ayers, the Keeper and himself a noted authority, who also contributes descriptive notes and an introductory essay on the collection. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

CURTIS, JULIA B. WITH AN ESSAY BY LITTLE, STEPHEN
Chinese Porcelains of the Seventeenth Century: Landscapes, Scholars' Motifs and Narratives
China Institute Gallery, New York. 1995. (ISBN: 0295974672). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 21.5 x 28 cm; 0.745 kg; 168 pages with black-and-white and colour illustrations.; Used in very good condition. Minor signs of wear on the front and back cover. Interior as new.; Exhibition catalogue.; "According to Dr. Curtis, with the decline of the imperial court of the Ming dynasty in the early years of the seventeenth century, patronage of the kilns at Jingdezhen shifted to the scholar-official and merchant classes. Then, at the end of the century, as the Manchu established control over the country under a new dynasty, the Qing (1644-1911), patronage of the kilns was returned again to the imperial court. As a result, during much of the seventeenth century, the decorative schemes which appeared on the pots reflected the interests and concerns of non-imperial patronage groups - the scholar-officials and merchants. Taken in combination with the evidence of the painting on the pots themselves, the argument was compelling and intellectually elegant. As is so often the case in art exhibitions, the scholarship represents many years of hard work exploring collections, gathering information, trying out theoretical models, and constantly refining views and perceptions. This is certainly true of this exhibition; Julia Curtis has unstintingly thrown herself into the task for over a decade. In the writing of the catalogue, she has produced a noteworthy new body of research on the significance of the inscriptions, both prose and poetic, which are found on many of the porcelains." excerpt from the foreword by Candance J. Lewis, Director of the China Institute Gallery. Very Good/No Jacket.
