LESOUALC'H, THEO; TRANSLATED BY MARWOOD, PAMELA
History of Art: Japanese Painting
Heron Books, London. 1970. Hardcover. Book, English text; Hardcover (leather without dust jacket); 208 pages with colour illustrations; 17.5 x 27.1 cm; 0.818 Kg; Used book in very good condition showing minor signs of wear.; "When Japanese prints were on show in Paris from 1867 onwards, Impressionism and its derivatives principally took from them certain formulas: formulas and precedents which formed the basis for the innovations considered desirable by painters at the time. Whistler, whose Old Battersea Bridge caused a sensation, was adapting Hiroshige. Degas, with his diagonal compositions, his balancing obliques, his broad planes, had taken his inspiration from Hokusai. And Monet would not have cut off so many boats in the middle, nor so far developed his evocation of the "day without shade which is truly itself", without the example of the ukiyo-e. His Nympheas, that long pictorial meditation which occupied the last twenty-five years of his life, remains one of the most profoundly Japanese works that has ever been painted in the West, less perhaps for its actual style and quality of light than for the feelings behind it and those it seeks to arouse in this spectator. As the painter once confided to his friend George Clemenceau: "I simply bend my efforts towards the maximum appearance in direct relation to the unknown realities..When one is on the plane of concordant appearances, one cannot be far from reality, at least, as far as we are able to know it." These words might equally well have came from a Zen master. This need not be surprising, however, considering they were spoken at Gilberny, in the vast park Monet contrived there by diverting a river, at the time he was working on the Nympheas. This park, and this fresco eighty-seven yards long, echo the spirit of Zen, which, say the sages of Yamato, blows where it lists, but lingers more readily than elsewhere in those places where man seems to have divined the secret plans of nature, and has undertaken to extend them accordingly. Van Gogh also approached the Japanese ideal as it was then revealed: he finished by perceiving the Edo landscapes in the Arles countryside - or very nearly! His tragic fate reads almost like one of those apologias in which the golden legend of Far Eastern painting abounds. The same with Gauguin, another haunted man." excerpt from the introduction by Jean-Clarence Lambert. Very Good/No Jacket.

HAJEK, LUBOR
Japanese Graphic Art
Chartwell Books, Inc, New Jersey, United States. 1989, 2nd Edition. (ISBN: 1555213049). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 24.5 x 30 cm; 1 Kg; 37 pages plus appendix with 113 colour plates.; Used book with signs of wear on the dust jacket. The interior is in good condition.; Includes: The development of Japanese art, Methods and themes on graphic art, The Major painters and engravers, over 110 colour illustrations, Background commentary on each print and A glossary of Japanese art terms.; Typical of graphic art in Japan are the marvelous ukyio-e prints. At one time regarded as "decadent", the colorful portraits of beauties moving around the demi-monde and of actors performing in the popular kabuki theatres catch the spirit of the new life that developed in the major Japanese cities from the seventeenth century onwards. In this stunning book, the author traces the fascinating story of how Japanese art flourished under a number of aristocratic and military regimes, with graphic art reaching a wider audience as a result of the new printing techniques. The selection of over 110 full-color prints reproduced here were chosen to demonstrate exactly the range and the craft of the Japanese engravers. Some of the wood-cuts illustrated books of poems, tales of warriors, and play scripts; others took their part in popular picture books celebrating such eternal themes as the beauty of women and the return to nature. Each illustration is accompanied by helpful comments about the artist and subject. A glossary of terms round off this book - the complete guide to a most important and beautiful art form. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 640 pages with 1025 colour and 100 black and white illustrations; 22.70 x 28.5 cm; 2.75 Kg; Used book with signs of wear, namely on the dust jacket that shows scuffs and scratches. Interior in very good condition. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; VERY HARD TO FIND.; Ming pottery and porcelain, dating from China's Renaissance period between the mid fourteenth and mid seventeenth centuries, has influenced the way people serve food and decorate their buildings from Europe to East Africa. In imperial China, ceramics were needed for the daily use of the emperors and their households as well as for the performance of sacred and secular rites. Inscribed vessels were presented to Buddhist, Daoist and Confucian temples, and pottery replicas were required after death to furnish the deceased with houses, servants and food for the afterlife. Glazed architectural ceramics have been found throughout China. Beyond its borders, high-quality porcelains were bestowed as diplomatic gifts, while lesser wares were widely traded internationally. The British Museum holds the world's broadest collection Ming ceramics, here published for the first time in its entirety. Nearly a thousand items are illustrated, identified, dated and discussed, incorporating the most up-to-date archaeological discoveries and scientific research previously available only in Chinese or specialist journals. The author first provides an accessible historical context, followed by stimulating essays on the porcelain industry, trade and diplomacy, and aspects of social life and burials in the Ming dynasty. Each chapter of the catalogue is then introduced with a brief summary of its defining characteristics. New and revised translations are given for every inscription, with transcriptions in printed Chinese characters. Every entry is illustrated with specially commissioned colour photography. A wealth of additional information, much of it never before published in English, is clearly presented for ease of reference in chronologies, maps, appendices, glossary and bibliography. The result is an essential book for any collector, student or scholar. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Chinese Porcelain Traditions of Manufacture and Sale: An Introduction to Twenty Eight 18th Century Gouaches/Chinees Porselein Hoe Het Gemaakt En Verkocht Werd: Een Inleiding Op Achtentwintig 18e Eeuwse Gouaches
Princessehof, Leeuwarden. 1990. (ISBN: 9071588041). Soft cover. Book, English and Dutch text.; Paperback; 21 x 20.9 cm; 0.221 Kg; 80 pages with colour illustrations; Used book with signs of wear, namely on the front cover, spine and back cover. Edgeworn. Interior as new.; "The Princessehof collections incorporate two series of Chinese gouaches illustrating the manufacture of porcelains in China. Each series is painted in a distinctive style. There are fourty scenes in all which partly complement one another as far as their content is concerned. The larger series, with twenty-eight scenes, each one sized 28 cm by 30 cm, is the subject of this presentation. It probably dates late 18th century. Originally bought in Canton, it was presented during the 1930' to Nanne Ottema, founder of the Princessehof, by the Vereeniging van Vrienden der Aziatische Kunts, Amsterdam, as a gift. The objective of this publication is to provide factual information for a general public; to narrate in simple words Chinese traditions of porcelain manufacture as illustrated in twenty-eight scenes, and thereby to render and impression of the China of earlier days, when European merchants were desirous to learn more of ther varied industries, yet were prevented from travel beyond Canton. That the setting of the scenes is Jingdezhen, where European merchants obtained most of their porcelains for export to Canton, is indicated through the physical and social environment they illustrate. Methods of porcelain manufacture have changed since the gouaches were painted. Even so, many a technique, tool or manner illustrated here continues to be applied successfully, to this day." excerpt from the introduction. Good/No Jacket.

HETHERINGTON, A.L.; HOBSON, R.L. (INTRODUCTION)
The Early Ceramic Wares of China
London: Benn Brothers, Limited. 1922, 1st Edition. Hardcover. Book, English text; Hardcover (brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gold motifs on the front cover); 23.5 x 29.5 cm; 1.8 Kg; 26 pages with preface, introduction, contents and list of plates plus 160 pages with 100 illustrations of which 12 are in colour with original tissue guards.; Edgeworn. Signs of wear on the front cover, spine and back cover. The interior is in good condition with minor signs of wear.; "The object of this book is to put before those interested in the early Chinese wares, information which will be of service to them at different stages of their collecting. I have given expression to a feeling that has always possessed me during my studies of the subject, and that is the necessity of a general understanding of the history of the country if a proper conception of its art is to be obtained. For this reason I have occupied some space in setting out, in the early section of the book, the main features which mark the various dynastic epochs: I fancy that, if the historical facts there described are kept in mind, the collector will find much less difficulty in unravelling the ceramic problems which confront him. In selecting the illustrations I have followed a somewhat unusual course. The specimens chosen, with one or two exceptions, are not the rarest and most costly examples, nor are they taken from the great National Museums. I have illustrated typical pieces of good quality in the possession of private collectors. The ordinary person, in my opinion, wants to see the kind of thing he may hope to acquire for himself. For convenience the half-tone plates have been grouped at the end of the chapters to which they relate. In each case the name of the collector to whom the specimen belongs is named. " excerpt from the preface by A.L. Hetherington, February, 1922. Good/No Jacket.

NEAVE-HILL, W.B.R.; GARNER, HARRY SIR (FOREWORD)
Chinese Ceramics
John Bartholomew & Son Limited, Edinburgh&London. 1975, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0702810215). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 21.8 x 30.6 cm; 0.876 Kg; 176 pages with black and white and colour illustrations.; Used book in good condition with signs of wear in the dust jacket, minor signs of wear in text and the author signature glued to the copyright page. Dust jacket now protected with a clearcover. INCLUDES LOOSE LETTER HANDWRITTEN BY THE AUTHOR DATED FROM 1975; In Chinese Ceramics the author has summarised the main features of Chinese Ceramic development from the Neolithic pottery of 2000 B.C. to the enamelled porcelain of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. If there is any special emphasis, it lies in the very full treatment of the beautiful monochrome wares of the Sung Dynasty, a subject which the author has specially studied. The Sung dynasty is rightly regarded as the classical age of Chinese ceramics, and the Sung Wares, often undecorated and relying entirely on form, colour, and texture for their appeal, are supreme achievements of the potter's art. But the earlier less sophisticated and the later highly decorative wares all have their masterpieces, many of which are described and illustrated in this book. Throughout Chinese history foreign influence has had a decisive effect on the arts. Sometimes this influence has been a by-product of Chinese imperialism, sometimes a result of foreign incursion; but in neither case have the influences engulfed the native Chinese Art. To understand these influences some knowledge of Chinese is desirable. The author, as a professional historian, is well able to deal with this problem and a valuable feature of the book is the setting of the ceramics of each period against their historical background. Good/Good.

HILLIER, JACK
The Art of the Japanese Book (2 Volumes)
Sotheby's Publications by Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd. 1987, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 085667317x). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; 2 Hardcover VOLUMES (with dust jackets) in slipcase.; 24.6 x 33.5 cm; 6.9 Kg; 1132 pages with colour and black and white illustrations throughout.; VOLUME I: 3.681 Kg, 608 pages; VOLUME II: 3.236 Kg, from page 609 to 1132.; Minor signs of wear on the slipcase and dust jackets. Interior as new.; It is surprising that so little of the great heritage of Japanese art in book form has been appreciated in the west, where attention has been largely confined to Ukyo-e prints. There has hitherto been no publication, in Japanese or in any non-Japanese language, that does justice to the art of the Japanese illustrated book. Jack Hiller, a wood engraver himself, has been a collector and connoisseur of the Japanese book for over thirty years. An unrivalled knowledge of the subject, and of the location of the rarer key works, has enabled him to present, for the first time, a balanced, appositely illustrated account of the prints in book form of a nation supremely gifted in all the arts of the book. In Japan the wood-block prints contained in book and album occupy a more important place in the national art as a whole than in any other country. In printed books, both illustrated literary texts and volumes that were entirely the artist's work, all schools of Japanese art were represented, and block-cutters and printers quintessentialised the characteristics of each school and the gifts of individual masters. A Kõetsu book such as "Michimori" epitomises the Rimpa or Decorative school, the Seirõ Bijin Awase Sugata Kagami of Shunshõ and Shigemasa goes to the heart of the "Floating World", the two parts of Suiseki Gafu reveal the genius of an artist whose few surviving paintings and drawings give no inkling of his powers. The Art of the Japanese Book surveys the work of the major artists from the first books of the early 1600s to those that were published up to the end of the American occupation in 1951, selecting from the often prolific output of these artists to show them at their most typical and impressive. The artistry and techniques of book designers, artists, block-cutters and printers are examined, based on specimens of opium condition and unfaded colour. The connection between the artists of the book and the current mainstreams of painting is a constant underlying theme, and in regard to the books of the last hundred years, has meant a concern with not only traditional native painting, but also modern western styles adopted or adapted by Japanese artists. Over nine hundred prints are here reproduced, demonstrating each phase of the development of the Japanese book, and the crucial aspects of each designer's rt. Erotica take their place with the rest, to have omitted them would have been to depart from giving a true picture of Japanese's art, for books of this kind, published on a scale and with an openness far greater than in any western country, contain the work of the greatest masters of the Japanese print. The Japanese Illustrated book, the product if a small, closely knit community of devoted craftsmen, is a central expression of Japanese culture. This authoritative book opens up a subject of the greatest significance for the understanding of a Japanese civilisation. As New/Dust Jacket Included.

HILLIER, JACK
Japanese Prints & Drawings from the Vever Collection (Complete 3 Volumes)
Sotheby Parke Bernet Publication LTD, New Jersey and Rizzoli International Publications, Inc, New York. 1976. (ISBN: 0856670251). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text.; Hardcover (3 volumes with dust jacket in slipcase). Top edges gilt.; 34 x 25.5 cm.; 8.3 Kg.; 1034 pages with black and white and a few colour illustrations.; Used with signs of wear on the dust jackets and slipcase. Interior in very good condition.; Limited edition of 2,000 copies of which this is 793.; Among the arts of Japan, the colour print continues to exercise the strongest appeal to us in the West. The main reason for the present widespread and growing interest is the powerful design combined with the beauty of the colour harmonies of the prints. But there are also other reasons; they depict a Japan of the past now almost vanished, its culture, mores, annual events, legends and its history; and they also show the influence of the Japanese print on the evolution of modern Western art. In the last few years the most important event in the world of Japanese prints was the discovery of the great collection formed by Henri Vever, a prominent Parisian jeweller and one of the earliest protagonists of Japonism. His first acquisitions were made in the 1880s, and by 1920 he was able to dispose of many thousands to a Japanese industrialist from whom they went eventually to the Tokyo National Museum, where they now form the major part of the national collection. But Henri Vever retained many of the choicest specimens to which he later added by astute buying in the 1920, when the collections of erstwhile rivals like Gonse, Haviland, Manzi, and Javal came under the hammer in Paris. The outbreak of war in 1939 and the occupation of France led to the complete disappearance of what had become a legendary collection and its survival remained in doubt until it was announced that part of it was to be sold at Sotheby's in two sales, one in 1974 and another in 1975. In order to record this unique collection in a manner worthy of its importance, the volumes comprise not only the prints and drawings that appeared in the two sales but also, through the generous co-operation of the present owner, those that will not be sold, many of which are of the greatest rarity and have seldom, if ever, been reproduced before. The 970 items, all of which are illustrated, about 69 in colour, have been arranged chronologically and those in series have been placed in their correct order. Brief notes on the artists, their style of work and environment, as well as the development of the wood-block print in Japan, link each section. The name of the artist is also shown in Japanese characters. The quality of these prints and drawings bear witness to the supremacy of Henri Vever as a collector and provide what is the finest and most comprehensive series of illustrations ever to appear on the subject in Western literature. Jack Hillier, whose unrivalled expertise in the field of the Japanese print is internationally recognised, is the author of numerous books on Japanese prints and paintings which have appeared over the last twenty years.
