Das nationale Aufbauwerk und die Aufgaben der deutschen Architektur
Berlin, 1952 47pp inc sepia photos etc. Stapled card covers, 30x21. Spine rubbed at bottom and bottom corners clipped on some pages, no loss. Very interesting early DDR publication laying down principles for modern architecture and planning. Soviet socialist realism is naturally approved of, also Schinkel and other neo-classicists. Also some discussion of industrial architecture. Interestingly, includes some examples from West Germany, 'financed by American dollars'. The photographs are particulalry interesting. Uncommon.

ANDERSON William J
Architectural Studies in Italy
Glasgow, Maclure, Macdonald & Co. 1890 41 plates, with unpaginated text for each, introduction including sketch by Thomson facing title page, dedication from the author on the half-title page. 43x33, cloth, glt decoration. Some rubbing and marks to cloth, pulling to top and bottom of spine, otherwise very good. This is copy 73 of only 150 printed. Beautifully produced work, a fine tribute to the author's draughtsmanship and the printers' expertise. Anderson was the first recipient of the Alexander Thomson Travelling Scholarship in 1887, and this book is a collection of his sketches during his travels in Italy that the scholarship funded. Also in 1890 he became President of the Glasgow Architectural Association. By 1894 he was Director of the Architectural Department at Glasgow's renowned School of Art, while continuing to write and practice privately. Tragically, a collapse at a site where he was the supervising architect led to five deaths of workmen; Anderson suffered a nervous breakdown in the aftermath of the inquest, and took his own life at the age of 37 in 1900. [Heavy item, may require additional postage to some destinations]

ANDERSON Robert
Examples of the Municipal, Commercial, and Street Architecture of France and Italy from the 12th to the 15th Century.
London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, William McKenzie 1868 103 plates, with c. 26 additional pages of explanatory text. 38x28, half bound in morocco, marbled boards, glt text and decoration, marbled endpapers. Spine rather rubbed, edges rubbed and worn, some browning to the title page, very good thus. Robert Rowland Anderson set up his practice in Edinburgh in 1860 while also working for the civilian service of the Royal Engineers, and gradually developed a practice specialising in both private and public buildings in Scotland, perhaps was perhaps perhaps best known for his work on the Catholic Apostolic Church in Edinburgh. By the end of his career he was lauded as one of Scotland's most important architects, because - or possibly despite - his displays of "awesome firmness on what he considered to be matters of principle." [ref Dictionary of Scottish Architects] The studies for this book date originally from tours of Europe taken around 1859 to 1862, and are based on both photographs and sketches taken during these travels. The Swedish architect Axel Herman Haig assisted in the final stages of assembling the materials for publication. [heavy item, may require additional postage]
