SMYTH-BUNNELL, JANE
Allegheny Long Ago: A Coloring Book
Pittsburgh, PA, Allegheny West Civic Council. 1978, 1st Edition. Wrappers in Portfolio. Ill.: Jane Smyth-Bunnell. Book, Small Folio (14" X 10"), yellow tapled stiff wraps with decorative lettered title and line drawing. 18 interior pages illustrated with drawings for coloring by Jane Smyth-Bunnell. The book is comprised of scenes of the North Side of Pittsburgh, PA in what was previously known as Allegheny City. It appears to be set in late 19th or very early twentieth century given the clothing of the (distinctly upper-class) children in the pictures and one picture which shows a couple driving a horse and carriage. It includes West Park (with its cenotaph), several shops and primarilly the mansions of the industrial barons of 19th Century Pittsburgh, as they looked in their heyday. Streets pictured include Beech, Western and North Lincoln. Also pictured are Emanuel Episcopal Church and Calvary Methodist Church. There is at least one interior of two girls (white and black) having a tea party and a double page picture of half a dozen or so boys (in top hats!) and girls (dressed in "frills and furbelows") playing along the porches of large residences. A historical reminder of the very upper-class character of this now quite otherwise neighborhood, the buildings could well be historically accurate. The line drawings for coloring are NOT numbered and generally, one would have to say, complex and detailed enough to challenge any child to make some semblance of verisimilitude with crayons. Luckily with this copy none made the attempt. The book is completely unmarked throughout. No owner's name, no childish scrawls, no dabs of color or half finished areas. Clean, clear, white and untouched. The staples are not rusted nor is there any sign of tugging or pulling to loosen them or damage the wraps. A square, stiff, crisp, copy without tears, stains, creases etc. There is a miniscule bump at the top front fore corner and a latent crease at the opposite corner. These are flaws almost too negligible to mention. Fine. RARE. (None listed in OCLC). Fine.
