WEESP FORTIFICATION.- ALS.-
A.L.S. in Dutch dated Weesp 30 April 1814, to a general of the Dutch forces, reporting that the French for some reason fired their guns a 150-200 times. The author surmises that the display of gunfire and flares was linked to the celebration of 'Robert'
Weesp, autograph, 1814. Folio. Meas. 31.5 x 19 cm. 2 folds. 28 lines of text and signature. (II, II (blank)pp.). (Paper watermarked 'Vryheyt', countermark 'P.S.'). [30 April]. The occupation of the Northern part Holland by the French ended in 1813 when Napoleon was defeated at Leipzig. In November 1813 allied forces chased the French off with the exception of Delfzijl and Maastricht, where it lasted well intoi 1814 for the French to withdraw. The reporting officer guesses that the French held the celebration of 'Robert'. November 30th 1813 saw the return of King Willem from England. This letter proves that the French still held the fortress of Weesp almost 6 months later towards the end of April 1814..
