James Dean: Behind The Scene
Smith Gryphon Ltd, London, 1991. First Thus, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Fine Condition/Fine. 9781856850001 Introduction by Dennis Hopper. For the first time in their history, the Warner Brothers Archives have allowed access to their extraordinary James Dean collection. It is almost unbelievable that, more than three decades after Dean's tragic death in 1955, there should emerge intact, so rich and extensive a treasury of unpublished photographs. No star has spoken more poignantly and more powerfully than Dean to the spirit of rebelliousness and independence. Cut down in the prime of his life, his solitary and troubled persona continues to haunt and move us still. James Dean: Behind the Scene gives a unique and subtly revealing portrait of the difficult actor. This selection from the hundreds of photographs taken on the sets of East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause and Giant makes a brilliant collage showing how, in many ways, Dean's screen and private personalities were both disturbingly and charmingly alike. And, also for the first time in print, here are photographs taken on the set by Dean himself. In addition, directly from the desks of Jack Warner, Dean's producer, Elia Kazan and Nick Ray, two of his directors, and many of the other famous studio personnel come original memos, telegrams, letters and press releases relating the pleasure and pain of working with such a tempestuous man. From the first discovery of Dean's talent to Elizabeth Taylor's heartbreaking reaction to his death, these original documents have never before been published. Pictorial blue end-papers. This is the first UK edition. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 223 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Dust Jacket un-clipped. The Decorated Letter
George Braziller, New York, 1978. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. 9780807608944 Titles, introduction, notes, bibliography & illustration lists to front. In Illuminated Manuscripts of every period, on page after page of flowing text, a special place of honor was reserved for the Decorated Letter or Initial. In this space the artist would insert a veritable jewel, and the text page would spring to life with vibrant reds, radiant blues, delicate shades of green and yellow, and almost always, precious metals such as gold. There were roselike motifs inspired by Byzantine floral ornamentation, while animals of every sort played an important part in the adornment of Romanesque initials. The Decorated Letter is filled with pages of the most beautiful, often humorous, and always imaginative initials, drawn from the widest range of manuscripts. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 119 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Dust Jacket is in as new condition, apart from normal shop shelf wear - contains no tears or chips or other damage. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Alexander & Pullinger, John & Joyce
Roman Cambridge: Excavations on Castle Hill 1956-1988 (Proceedings of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society Volume LXXXVIII)
Cambridge Antiquarian Society, Cambridge, 2000. First Edition, Softcover. Good Condition. Many of the excavations took place in the small areas which became available when individual houses were levelled, so that the information recovered was minimal, but the three larger areas, the market-gardens owned by St. John's College, the farm owned by the Charity of Edmund Storey and the area around Shire Hall proved particularly important and have allowed an outline history of the town nucleus from the last centuries BC until the 5th century AD to be compiled. An unexpected complication of the fieldwork proved to be that the keeping of the hillside free from buildings for centuries allowed the quarrying of the valuable gravel and chalk marl of which it is composed and the digging of many pits. Only careful trowelling allowed the areas of early land surfaces and the wooden structures on them to be recognised. It will be noted from the plan of excavations (Fig 1.1) that work was largely limited to the upper hillsides and the summit, so that only a partial recognition of the early settlement has been obtained. The lower slopes and the area near the bridge have not been available for study and it may well be that these were more densely inhabited. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 268 pages. small mark to front cover;. no Dust Jacket as published.. "St. John's" written in ink on front cover;.
