9780283993930 ADAMS, RICHARD, Legend of Te Tuna
ADAMS, RICHARD
Legend of Te Tuna
Sidgwick & Jackson, London, 1986. First Edition, Black Boards, Illustrated by: Rico, Ul De. Fine/Fine. 9780283993930 gilt titles spine; illustrated in colour & b/w.; "Three tremendous figures from the legendary world of the ancient Polynesian gods and heroes: Hina, beautiful goddess of the sky, the Polynesian Aphrodite, self-willed and shameless in the pursuit of her desires; Maui, the trickster-hero, half-human, half-divine, who, long ago, with his magic fish-hook, drew up the Pacific Islands out of the ocean and then, Prometheus-like, caught the sun in a snare and tied it fast to circle the earth for ever as the source of life; and Te Tuna, the terrible giant eel of the ocean depths, the most feared creature in the world. Te Tuna, ruling the ocean from his submarine coral palace, was the lover of Hina - for as long as he could keep her love from straying. When he learned that Maui had supplanted him, his wrath was more terrible than storm and earthquake. 'The legend fascinated me,' says bestselling author Richard Adams, 'from the moment I first heard it, some years ago, in Tahiti. I felt I had to try to write it for people this side of the world.' In this narrative poem he has retold unforgettably the greatest of South Sea legends, the tale of the duel to the death between Maui and Te Tuna, and of the harvest of that death, Te Tuna's divine gift from the grave. UI de Rico's superb illustrations, many in colour, form the perfect setting for Richard Adams' poem."; a mint condition copy; 71 pages. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Illustrator: Rico, Ul De. ASHE, GEOFFREY
Avalonian Quest
Fontana, London, 1984. First Paperback Edition, Paperback. Very Good/N/A. 9780413488008 blue titles spine; illustrated by b/w. photo's. & line drawings; "what evidence is there that Glastonbury was a great pagan sanctuary before Christianity? Over the past few decades, this town in Somerset - England's 'ancient Avalon' - has attracted ever increasing interest. Tourists pour in to visit its ruined Abbey, rich in Christian and Arthurian legend, and to climb the Tor, the strange hill above the town. Thousands assemble annually for church-sponsored pilgrimages, but many others come for mystical or occult reasons, seeing Glastonbury as a focus of spiritual power. Geoffrey Ashe looks at the real and surprising importance of Glastonbury in the religion, politics, culture and literature of England. He re-examines its best-known legends - those concerning Joseph of Arimathea and the Grail, and King Arthur's burial - and gives the case for a remarkable possibility underlying all the mysteries: a huge ritual maze may once have surrounded the Tor. Glastonbury emerges as a place that is subtly, powerfully alive, with a distinctive future as well as an astonishing past."; red dot on pre-title page but otherwise a clean copy; including notes, bibliography & index - 287 pages. ASHE, GEOFFREY
The Finger and the Moon
Panther, St. Albans, Herts. 1975. First Paperback Edition, Paperback. Good/N/A.. 9780586040409 cover illust. by Brian Froud, (Allhallows is a residential centre for research into magic in Somerset within sight of Glastonbury Tor. It is run by former psychiatrist Martin Ellis, who has become deeply involved in the occult as a means to rediscovering an old answer to the ancient anxieties of mankind. His success has aroused the interest of an expert on Arthurian legend and freelance journalist, Geoffrey, who comes to spend some time studying the phenomena of Allhallows and taking part in the activities. But he finds, amidst the strange, timeless atmosphere of the old house, the baffling maze and weird sculptures in the garden, and some harrowing experiences with a new mind-blowing drug that the questions he had at first posed lead to answers and other questions more disturbing than he had ever dreamed.) described by the author as "not fictitious in the pure sense" & as containing several events which - "...did happen - Even the Ritual of the Grail was once enacted at Tintagel. Over the years I have seen cause to believe that it was a valid magical working." - this is more than a 'novel' in the conventional sense with the author participating as a major character in the story. (Geffrey Ashe also lived at the foot of Glastonbury Tor), some impressions on front cover from mathematical workings on paper supported by the book & a slightly cocked spine, 264 pages including author's note on last page which refers to tarot arcana for readers with occult interests. AYTON, MARGARET
The Voice Within: A Collection Of Inspirational Poetry And Thoughts (SIGNED COPY)
Pilgrim Books, Norwich, Norfolk, 1987. First Edition, Blue Cloth, Illustrated by: Photo's. Fine/Fine. 9780946259212 Signed by Author. gilt titles spine; cover photo. of Fingal's Cave,; illustrated throughout by the author's b/w. photo's. (mostly of nature); Margaret Ayton comments: 'Inspirational poetry is the voice within, which is moulded and changed by outside influences according to one's understanding. This kind of poetry is a record, a response to a situation. It contains my observations of myself in a situation - how I feel and react - but also it is a response to what I see around me.' The resulting volume is a combination of particularly moving prose and poetry enhanced by photographic images. Its underlying theme is that of love, in many of its guises, and could be said to echo the words of Kahlil Gibran. In her own very personal way, the author expands some of his eloquent interpretations; indeed, she has followed the injunction in The Prophet: 'When love beckons to you, follow him, Though his ways are hard and steep.' This chronicle of her inner journey confirms the age-old concept that suffering can be a means to spiritual growth, a means to becoming part of the Whole. It is a deeply felt work by a caring writer, and will undoubtedly invoke a profound response in many who long to help and to understand in a troubled world. signed on the title page with the message - 'Best Wishes'; photo. & brief biography of author on rear D/J. flap; a mint copy with no faults, incld. index - 157 pages. 'All Things is Well Here' Letters From Hugh James of Levens to James Grahme, 1692-95 (CWAAS Record Series Vol. X)
Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society, Cumbria, 1988. First Edition, Softcover. Fine Condition/No Dust Jacket. 9780950077987 Inscribed by Author. inscriptiom on pre-title page reads "from the author New Year 1988"; Colonel James Grahme, one-time Privy Purse to James II and Master of the King's Buckhounds, man about Court, friend of the Monarch and also of the Monarch's mistress, found life difficult on the accession of William and Mary. Suddenly he became a suspected traitor, Catholic, and plotter. That he was none of these things, or only in a very small way, did nothing to make his circumstances more comfortable. He bought Levens from his cousin Alan Bellingham in 1689, and prepared to make this house in Westmorland fit for a civilised man to inhabit with his wife and family. Grahme spent much of his time away from Levens so corresponded with the men left to further his interests & direct his works. Hundreds of these letters survive & those printed here, from his steward Hugh James, are of especial interest for their vividness & quality of information. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 205 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Black titles spine. illustrated by b/w. photo's.; maps & plans. Includes appendices, glossary & index. Quantity Available: 1. Fine/Fine. 9780707305561 gilt titles spine; two b/w. map illustrations; "Derived from the Greek Aiguptious, the word 'Copt' was originally used to differentiate the native Egyptian from Greek and other foreigners who inhabited the country in its early history. However it was not untiI the sixteenth century that 'Copt' came to mean specifically Christian Egyptian. This book is not intended to be a theological history of the people who consider themselves as the true descendants of the ancient Egyptians. It is rather a general introduction to the political. religious and art history of those native Christians of Egypt, the Copts, from their origins in the first century to their situation in the present day. Translations of the writings of the Coptic Fathers, by the author, have been made readily accessible to the general reader in this volume, including, for example, rigorous monastic rules and fascinating accounts of early ascetic lifestyles."; including bibliography & index 187 pages.
