The central altar card is lavishly decorated in a classical style and features a large miniature of the Last Supper along with five additional miniatures depicting scenes from the Nativity of Jesus, the Crucifixion, the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and Christ with a crown of thorns. The Canon text on the card is beautifully calligraphed and surrounded by impressive borders adorned with motifs such as two large angels, flowers, acanthus leaves, and Crosses. Two smaller altar cards are also present, each with two miniatures and two large angels. Like the central card, the text on these cards is also calligraphed and surrounded by richly decorated borders consisting of acanthus leaves, flowers, and fruit twines. The tradition of using altar cards dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries when only the large central card with the text of the liturgy was used. This made it easier for the celebrant to read the text during Mass. In the 17th century, the Gospel of John was added to the central card, and a third card was introduced for symmetry. While the sequence and number of texts on the cards varied, the central card was always the largest. Until the Second Vatican Council in 1962, the altar cards were present on the High Altar during the Tridentine Mass. The large central card containing extracts from the Canon of the Mass was placed centrally on the Altar. The smaller card containing the text of the "Cum Lavat Manus" prayer and the adding of water to the wine was placed on one side of the Altar, while the other small card with the beginning of the Gospel of John was placed on the Gospel side of the Altar. After the Mass, the cards were removed or put away under the Altar cloth.A few unobtrusive tiny stains, a few text lines a bit pale, but altogether a fine set.

Folio-edition of Van der Aa's voluminous collection of important voyages to the East and West Indies and other countries, undertaken by all European countries, other than the Dutch. Including voyages by Acosta, Balby, Cabot, Cavendish, Chester, Columbus, Cortes, Coutinho, Da Cunha, Drake, Evesko, Frobisher, Gallonye, Da Gama, Garay, Garcia, Gilbert, Jenkinson, Harcourt, Herberer, Magallanes, Mildenhal and Cartwright, Mouette, Petelin and Andrasko, Raleigh, Saris, De Soto, etc.The work is partly based on Johan Lodewijk Gottfried's rare Historia antipodum (1631), but largely extended by Pieter van der Aa, known for his ambitious projects. Where other publishers were primarily concerned about the profits, Van der Aa wanted to publish outstanding books. For the present series of travels he either reused and revised older Dutch translations or had the original accounts translated for the first time into Dutch. In 1706 he already started publishing the translated voyages both in small (8vo) and large instalments (folio), and a year later he published a 28-volume set of the 8vo editions. The folio editions were afterwards issued and divided in four large collections of two volumes each. The present issue, is a reissue of these four collections with their own independent tile-pages and frontispieces, and ads a new general title-page and list of subscribers. Some occasional spots, a couple minor restorations and a few wormholes; a very good set, but with the fourth volume from a different and heavily trimmed set, in a modern binding and lacking the frontispiece and the title-page to the volume. XII, 135, [1 blank] pp. plus engraved title-page, 31 plates and the loosely inserted prospectus.Rare complete copy of the first (and only early) edition of an account of harbours and roadsteads in the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies, by the bookseller and historian Cornelis van der Aa (1749-1816), written to accompany the 31 beautiful and luxurious plates drawn (mostly from life) and engraved ca. 1772 to ca. 1781: large engraved views of the harbours, showing a wide variety of boats and ships, with people engaged in fishing or trade and 2 showing herring fishing and whaling (“De haring visschery” and “De walvisch vangst”). Loosely inserted in the present copy is the very rare prospectus (actually a separately distributed advertisement, issued at the time of publication), which gives much detailed information about the publication. The plates were first published as a print series and several single prints ca. 1779 to ca. 1781, but those showing the harbours and roadsteads at Batavia and the nearby island Onrust in the East Indies and those showing herring fishing and whaling do not generally appear in the sets of prints. The greater part of the text (pp. 44-135, with the 25 numbered and 2 unnumbered plates) is devoted to the harbours of the Netherlands: Rotterdam (2 plates), Hellevoetsluis, Goedereede, Brielle, Dordrecht, Maassluis, Vlaardingen, Schiedam, Delfshaven, Amsterdam (2 plates), Texel (2 plates), Den Helder, Hoorn, Enkhuizen, Medemblik, Edam, Middelburg, Rammekens, Flushing, Zierikzee, Veere, Brouwershaven, Harlingen and Stavoren. It is the only major pictorial atlas of Dutch sea ports published in the Netherlands. The book collates: *-3*2 A-2L2 = 74 ll. plus 32 plates, including the engraved title-page. The engraved title-page and the prospectus name Maaskamp as the publisher. The book itself nowhere names the printer, but Paul Etienne Briët printed the prospectus and so perhaps also the book itself.The plate size varies from about 26 x 38.5 to about 33.5 x 42 cm (image size about 18 x 28.5 to 25 x 35 cm). The prospectus notes that the book is being published “heden” (today) and is available from Maaskamp and well over fifty book and print sellers thoughout the Netherlands and in Embden, all named. It notes that Maaskamp is publishing the book bound (“in eenen bekwamen atlas gebonden uit te geeven”), and it is offered in boards (“gebonden in een cartonnen band”) for ƒ 21, a very expensive book at that time. The copies at the Royal Library in The Hague and the University of Amsterdam have Stormont marbled sides.Three plates (herring fishery and the ports of Batavia and Middelberg, the last numbered 22 and the other two unnumbered) have small tears in the foot margin, repaired with tape that has left browned patches, none approaching the image or text, the plate showing Goeree (no. 12) has a small and faint smudge that very slightly affects a bit of the sky, and the tape used to affix the newspaper clipping has left brown patches in the first free endleaf, but otherwise internally in very good condition and hardly trimmed, with many deckles at the head and foot. The marbled paper covering the binding is rubbed, scuffed and has split at the hinge, with much of that on the spine lost, and the hinges have been crudely re-enforced with clear (and later masking) tape, but the boards are still attached to the sewing supports. engr. title-page + [2] pp. plus 80 plates.First and only edition of a very rare collection of 80 engravings and etchings, depicting exotic trees, other plants and animals from the East and West Indies, Africa and China. The species depicted include coffee, tea, balsam, tamarind and sycamore trees, guava fruit, litchi (labeled in Chinese characters), and lions, monkeys, snakes, fish, a manatee, Indians fishing with snakes, Chinese fishing with birds, and fictitious animals such as a unicorn, flying dragon, etc. The plates probably came from several sources, for they appear to be from different hands. Many of the botanical illustrations had appeared earlier in John Ogilby, Africa being an accurate description of the regions of Ægypt (1670) and Olfert Dapper, Description de l’Afrique (1686). Van der Aa may have commissioned other plates himself, since some appear in his atlas La galerie agreable du monde, also from ca. 1720. The text in the plates is in Latin or Dutch, or both, and the engravings have been numbered in the lower right corner. The last plate (80), with the word “finis” below right, shows a farm house and horse-drawn cart flanked by scenes of farmers sowing, plouging and harvesting with the Leiden fortress and a church in the background, the whole in a decorated cartouche with human figures (with farming attributes), the Leiden coat of arms in the centre of the foot and the words "Soli Deo Gloria" on a banner at the head.The title and note to the reader indicate that the compiler wished to illustrate botanical and zoological species described by John Ray, Leon Rauwolff and Christian Mentzel. The work was published in Leiden by Pieter van der Aa, who also signed the dedication to Herman Boerhaave, suggesting he probably edited it as well. Most bibliographies date the series ca. 1720. The series is very rare, often incomplete and few libraries have any copy at all.Paper slightly browned throughout, title-page cut short at foot, a small tear and a piece missing from the margin of plate 62, plate 70 cut down and mounted with loss. [16] pp.Only copy located of a Latin ABC book for children, published in Italy, starting with alphabets on the back of the title-page and continuing on the next page, also introducing the Latin names for the punctuation marks and including reading exercises in one-syllable words. As in many ABC books, the alphabets are followed by the most important prayers and texts from the catechism, for example the Lord's Prayer, which is followed by the Ave Maria and some other prayers in Latin to the Holy Virgin, Benedictus, Angelus Dei, antiphons, a list of symbols of the twelve apostles, prayers for during the mass, litanies (for example of the Blessed Virgin Mary), etc. This tiny book shows the strong 18th-century connection between children's education and religion: when learning to read and to write, the young children had to concern themselves with religious texts. We couldn't trace any other copy of this rare ABC book, which is beautifully illustrated with small religious woodcuts. The book collates A-B4.Some water stains, otherwise in good condition. The work deals with the Almoravid and Almohad dynasties who ruled the southern part of Spain and the north-western part of Africa from the 11th up to the 13th century. Abu-Mohammed Assaleh mainly focusses on Morocco, Fes and Mauritania. Little is known about the author except that he lived in Granada, Spain, in the year 726 (1325/1326). The text was translated by the Franciscan Antonio Moura (1770-1840), probably from the original manuscript, and is perhaps the only translation of the original Arabic text, since no other translations could be found.Browned throughout, with a few marginal waterstains and some occiasional small spots. 512; 552 pp.Second Spanish edition of a classic 12th-century Arabic treatise on agriculture, known in Arabic as Kitab al-filaha. Most of the book deals with agriculture, including fruits, vegetables, grains (including rice), legumes and cotton, with discussions of soils, the benefits of letting fields lie fallow, crop rotation, fertilizers, irrigation, pruning, grafting, ploughing, making preserves, and plant diseases. The last few chapters discuss animal husbandry, including horses and animal diseases. It was the most comprehensive Arabic treatise on the subject, incorporating large parts of the most important earlier works on the subject, most notably the work of Ibn Wafid. Zakariya also made use of classical Greek sources.With bookplates. Slightly browned and with two or three leaves with minor marginal defects, but still in good condition. Bindings very good. A large collection of 807 photographs, providing a unique view into the private life of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (1918-2004), ruler of Abu Dhabi and founding father of the United Arab Emirates. The photographs depict Sheikh Zayed and his family, including Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (b. 1948), relatives and friends partaking in various leisure activities. Also included are some photographs of children, probably including Sheikh Zayed's sons, possibly Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (b. 1961). The pictures date from a significant period in the history of Abu Dhabi, the years leading up to the foundation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971, and from the earliest years of the new federation.A group of pictures is possibly taken in Pakistan, many depicting a large manor where a party arrives by helicopter. Sheikh Zayed enjoyed visiting the country to go horse riding and hunting with his falcons. Many photographs depict casual dinner parties, gatherings, and meetings in the open air. [ABU DHABI – STATE VISITS TO PAKISTAN].

[Photograph archive and album. Album title]: Visit to Lahore of His Highness Skeikh Zayed bin Sultan Alnahayyani the ruler of Abudhabi (16th to 28th November, 1967).[Pakistan, 1967-1971]. An archive of 183 photographs: 133 loose black and white photographic prints (ca. 30 x 25 cm), 30 smaller ones (ca. 5 x 6 cm) numbered and mounted together on a single sheet of paper, and 20 additional prints in the album. Further with numerous rolls of original medium format negatives.Original black half morocco album, green cloth sides with title and emblem of the United Bank Limited Pakistan on the front board.

A trove of unpublished photographs depicting two official visits to Pakistan by HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The earlier visit, in 1967, is documented by a separate photo album containing images of the visit to Lahore, the second largest city of Pakistan, from 16 to 28 November 1967. The album opens with a picture of HH Sheikh Zayed arriving in his car; later pictures show him being honoured and presented with an album very similar to the present one, and in the company of officials representing Pakistan’s United Bank Limited (UBL). Almost 20 years later, in 1986, Sheikh Zayed would donate a hospital to the city, now the "Shaikh Zayed Medical Complex", one of the leading medical institutions in Pakistan.The 30 small photographs show an audience with Sheikh Zayed as well as a banquet in his honour, attended by various Pakistani dignitaries including Agha Hasan Abedi (1922-1995), the illustrious founder of UBL. These photos, apparently clipped from a set of medium format contact prints, are mounted on a sheet of coated black photographic paper.The largest set in size and number shows the state visit that took place on 20-22 January 1970 at the invitation of President Yahya Khan (1917-1980). It provides extensive documentation of the large Abu Dhabi delegation being formally received by Yahya Khan, who served as president of Pakistan from March 1969 to December 1971. Many show HH Sheikh Zayed shaking hands with and speaking to President Yahya; others show the airport reception, formal dinners, speeches, but also informal conversations, members of the delegation handling falcons, and numerous high-ranking Abu Dhabi retainers. Among the persons depicted is again Agha Hasan Abedi, but there are also several pictures of Butti bin Bishr, secretary to Sheikh Zayed, and Ahmed bin Khalifa Al Suwaidi, the first Minister of Foreign Affairs of the UAE and personal representative of Sheikh Zayed. President Yahya Khan had been "one of the very first international leaders to reach out to Sheikh Zayed after the UAE had been founded and had, prior to this, in July 1970, been instrumental in creating an agreement to provide technical assistance to the then Trucial States. With the December 1971 union agreement approaching, Pakistan was quick to forge even closer ties, and Khan had been one of the first foreign leaders to offer his congratulations and reiterate his country’s support when the UAE was born. Full diplomatic ties were then quickly established, and Pakistan became one of the first to extend recognition to the new country ... All his life Sheikh Zayed had held a personal affinity for Pakistan. He had hunted there extensively, came to know the people, its culture and lands, and enjoyed close ties with leaders" (Wilson).From the estate of Azhar Abbas Hashmi (1940-2016), Pakistani financial manager and eminent literary patron with close ties to Karachi University. Hashmi served the UBL for many years, becoming its vice-president before founding several important cultural organisations and becoming known as a man of letters in his own right. Thanks to his close connections with the Gulf states, Abu Dhabi provided funds to build Karachi University’s faculty of Islamic studies, as well as its Sheikh Zayed Islamic Centre and it mosque, Jamiya Masjid Ibrahim.The majority of the photographs are entirely unmarked, but they occasionally show an Arabic inscription or stamp on the reverse. Some of the loose photographs slightly scuffed along the edges, with an occasional nick or small tear, but otherwise in fine condition. Binding of the album slightly rubbed. An important collection of at least largely unpublished photographs concerning the Sheikh of Abu Dhabi’s visits to Pakistan in the last years before the formation of the UAE, entirely unknown and without counterparts in the UAEhistory, Keystone or Hulton/Getty press photo archives.l Cf. [8], 319, [1 blank] pp.Third edition (all published in Latin translation, the first in 1497) of three books of surgery by the Arabic physician Abu al-Quasim (ca. 936-1009/13 CE in Andalusia), known in the West as Abulcasis and here erroneously “Albucasis”. The text is taken from parts of his principal work, the surgical handbook al-Tasrif. Topics covered by the three books include cauterization (book 1), making incisions and blood-letting (book 2) and fractures and dislocated limbs (book 3). A fourth edition appeared under the title Methodus medendi in 1541.Abu al-Quasim became personal physician to Hakam II, Calif of Western Califate centred on Cordova. His handbook was translated into Latin in the 12th century by Gerard of Cremona in Toledo and helped bring Arabic surgical knowledge to Europe, where surgery had been separated from academic medical training. opening with a full-page woodcut of a man with about thirty different kinds of injuries (and shown with the weapons and other instruments that caused the injuries still in place, cutting, stabbing and otherwise injuring him)The present edition combines two independent medical works, but although Abu al-Quasim’s manual (k4r-dd6v, pp. 117-319), is almost twice as extensive and more important in the history of medicine - so that we present it first - it actually follows the shorter work, the first edition of the four books of the Rerum medicarum by the Greek physician at Constantinople (Istanbul), Theodorus Priscianus (a1r-k3v, pp. 1-112). The four books cover external ailments, internal ailments, women’s ailments and physiology. An 8vo edition appeared at Basel in the same year, but it omits the entire fourth book and parts of the first two. It went through several further editions.Contemporary inscription in ink on last blank page. A few tiny holes in the first 2 pages. First 4 pages browned. Minor foxing to the title-page. LXXXIII ll.Fourth edition of a collection of seven treatises on medicine and philosophy, edited by Alessandro Achillini (1463-1512), originally published as Secretum secretorum at Bologna in 1501 (perhaps without the second and third works). It first appeared under the present title in 1520. Achillini was one of the greatest anatomists of his time and an influential teacher. He studied philosophy and medicine at the university of Bologna, where he was appointed lecturer of philosophy in 1484 and of medicine in 1495. From 1506 to 1508 he also taught at Padua. Four of the works in the present collection are pseudo-Aristotelian works that had been well known since the 13th century or earlier. The Secreta secretorum is here present in the translation of Philip of Tripoli; the De signis aquarum, ventorum et tempestatum on weather signs, was translated in the 13th century by Bartholomew of Messina; the third pseudo-Aristotle is De mineralibus on gems; the fourth, Alexandri Macedonis ad Aristotelem de mirabilibus Indie, is a fictitious letter by Alexander the Great to his teacher Aristotle, describing the wonders of India and the East. All four of them were accepted during the later Middle Ages as reliable literary portraits of the Indians, especially of the Brahmans.The three remaining treatises in the present work consist of a work by Alexander of Aphrodisias on the intellect, another by Averroes on the beauty of the soul, and a work by Achillini himself on universals. Vervliet, Vine leaf ornaments 54, cites the present edition as the first use of its ornament.Very good copy, with very slight browning and a few marginal spots, lacking the final blank.
