Bird and Abraham Smith were returning from a "trading expedition to Santa Fee, in what is called New Mexico, a Spanish province, to which place they arrived in safety, and exchanged their merchandise for stock, (to wit) jacks, mules, and horses and set out on their return home; that after travelling six days, they were met with near one hundred Indians of the Arappaho tribe, who forcibly took their stock, amounting to seventy-five head, and drove them off…."
