FRANCE. CHALAIS-MEUDON 1918. Album of original photographs of the 14th Company of the 2nd Mechanics Regiment, Air Service, American Expeditionary Forces, while stationed at Chalais-Meudon on the outskirts of Paris.
[n. p., probably Paris, 1918]. 15 original photographs (6 5/8 x 9 inches) mounted on rectos of heavy pages (10 x 12 1/2), including title-page with photograph of a dirigible in the air. Heavy pict. wraps. with regiment's insignia pasted on front. Oblong 4to. String tie. Wear to covers and around edges of pages, photographs are fine. Chalais-Meudon had been since 1877 the site of French development of lighter-than-air craft and was the major site for the making of balloons and dirigibles during World War I. The 14th Company of 2nd Mechanics Regiment was stationed here to assist the French in building and maintaining the dirigibles and other aircraft. These are excellent professional photographs, each with caption in negative along lower edge. There are two group shots of the entire company, followed by: the entrance gate to Chalais-Meudon, troop formation along the lake, the American barracks, the American Y. M. C. A., the Lake and the road to the Shops, the American Mess Hall and the French Infirmary, after chow (men standing around vats of hot food), view of the Lake and the Store house, a section of the Balloon field (two French officers in front of tent, balloons and balloon shed behind them), A camp view, balloon factories in rear, Meudon-Val Fleury railway station, and a folding panoramic view of Meudon (6 5/8 x 17 1/2). A rare album put together for the members of the regiment.
