George Haldeman was a famous pioneer pilot from Lakeland, Florida, best known for his attempted trans-Atlantic flight in 1927 with women pilot Ruth Elder which ended by aborting into the ocean 300 miles short of their goal. Had they made it, Elder would have been the first woman to fly across the Atlantic. The portrait of Haldeman was taken in 1927, the year of this historic flight. Pioneer pilot Slim Larned ended up flying for United Airlines for many years.
