CALIFORNIA AND NEW MEXICO. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, TRANSMITTING INFORMATION...ON THE SUBJECT OF CALIFORNIA AND NEW MEXICO.
Washington, 1850. (House Ex. Doc. no. 17). First edition. 976 pp. plus 7 maps (6 folding). Original marbled boards, rebacked in dark blue cloth with gilt leather title label on spine and new endpapers. Lightly foxed as usual, one map with tape-repaired tears, else very good. Important compilation of reports and correspondence just after the take-over of California and New Mexico by the U. S. authorities at the end of the Mexican War. Reports and correspondence concerning the occupation of New Mexico and California in 1846 through 1849. Reports from Governor Charles Bent and Indian agent James S. Calhoun, being the earliest accounts by American officials of the Indian tribes of New Mexico, discussing their territories, population statistics, names of leaders, etc.; "Journal of the Convention of the Territory of New Mexico,' September 1849 - the first convention to establish U. S. forms of government in New Mexico; over 20 proclamations and laws of the Mexican government of California prior to the conquest, translated into English; reports and letters by Gen. Kearny and his "Proclamation to the people of California of March 1847;" the first constitution of California, issued October 1849, with names of signors; plus much on California Indians, gold discoveries, etc. The seven maps are: Fort Hill in Monterey; the mouth of San Francisco Bay; Lower California; Port Escondido; "Map of Oregon and Upper California from Fremont's surveys;" "Sketch of Gen. Riley's route through the mining districts…,"by Lt. Derby; and the Plan of the route of Major Beale's expedition against the Apaches in New Mexico. With regard to the map of Fremont and Preuss,: "Map of Oregon and Upper California...." first published in 1849. WHEAT, MAPPING THE TRANSMISSISSIPPI WEST 559 (p. 56n) notes that this 1850 version "more fully renders Fremont routes in the Central Valley than do the original issues of 1848 and 1849." Regarding Derby's map of Gen. Riley's route through the mining districts, Wheat also notes: "Derby accompanied General Bennet Riley on his trip through the gold diggings . . . , and although his map shows only a portion of the 'Mining Districts,' it is important since on it appear for the first time several names of certain actual mining camps in the middle of the Sierra foothills.... Some of these names have not survived, but Derby's map graphically shows how the miners were beginning to swarm up the Sierra streams into the general area which he designated as 'Diggings.'" COWAN I, p. 40. HOWES C 53 and P 447. ZAMORANO 80:14. WAGNER-CAMP 179b:2. WHEAT GOLD RUSH 31. WHEAT GOLD REGIONS 79. KURUTZ 106b. RITTENHOUSE 558.
