Beautifully illustrated cards, published by W. D. & H. O. Wills, branch of the Imperial Tobacco Company of Great Britain and Ireland. With instruction of how to choose, prepare and equip a Refuge Room; how to control, cool-down and extinct an incendiary bomb; fire fighting; large chapter on chemical gas warfare which includes the various shelters, respirators and their handling, protective gear, training, etc.; air defence, including fighter planes, balloon barrage, anti-aircraft searchlight and sound locator units, guns, etc. 005-00 .

Dans les années trente, prises en étau par ces deux menaces, les démocraties libérales semblaient condamnées à brève échéance. Lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l'alliance des libéraux et des communistes a triomphé du fascisme. Ensuite, les adversaires de la propriété privée ont perdu la Guerre froide. Le libéralisme reste aujourd'hui seul en lice. Les conflits du XXe siècle ont prouvé que le régime qu'on dénonçait en son début comme le plus faible s'est avéré le plus fort. Mais les questions soulevées par fascistes et communistes demeurent. " Quelle place le libéralisme accorde-t-il à la grandeur, à la beauté ? ", demandent les uns. " Quelle place pour la justice ? ", demandent les autres. Ces points d'interrogation résonnent encore. Sous le consensus apparent, un travail de sape s'opère. En 1945 et en 1989, le libéralisme n'aurait-il vaincu que par défaut ? Les corps sont satisfaits, car le confort et la sécurité règnent en maîtres. L'âme est inquiète. Membre du Parti Communiste de Grande-Bretagne à la fin des années quarante, militant de la Nouvelle Gauche dix ans plus tard, trotskiste dans la première moitié des années soixante, MacIntyre a émigré aux Etats-Unis en 1969, où il a renoncé à tout engagement politique. D'abord influencé par le jeune Marx et par le second Wittgenstein, il se tourne vers Aristote au début des années soixante-dix. A chacune de ces étapes contrastées, MacIntyre a placé au cÅ“ur de sa réflexion ce que le libéralisme tient aux marges de la politique : l'âme, la communauté et la vérité. Une constante se dégage ainsi, sous le chaos apparent. Tipped-in plate of General Joffre is missing. First few leaves of volume 2 are coming loose. Occasional light fingerprint smudges, but otherwise, text and plates are clean. Binding is still holding, but due to the weight of these heavy volumes, the binding could easily crack if the books are not handled gently. A magnificent photographic history of World War I, filled with images which were originally published in the French weekly newspaper L'ILLUSTRATION. Also contains color paintings and tipped-in plates of French and British commanders. Complete in two volumes, with all text in French. Both volumes measure approx. 15.75" x 12.5. Good .
