A leather-bound copy containing three novellas by Le Vicomte de Chateaubriand, including 'Atala' and 'Rene&apos. 1830 Edition.Bound in a contemporary half-calf binding on marbled boards. This volume contains three popular novelas by French writer Francois-Rene de Chateaubriand, those being 'Atala', 'Rene', and 'Les Aventures du Dernier Abencerage&apos.'Atala' was first published in 1801 and tells the romance of 'two Indian savages in the desert' and their story which is preserved through the Seminole oral tradition. 'Rene', first published in 1802, had a huge impact on early Romanticism and deals with a passionate young man who finds himself at odds with contemporary society.'Les Aventures du Dernier Abencerage' first appeared in 1826, and was inspired by the author's journey through Spain. Francois-Rene, vicomte de Chateaubriand (1768-1848) was a French writer, politician, and historian. Chateaubriand had a notable influence on French literature within the nineteenth century.With an illustrated bookplate belonging to prior owner Stephen Spring Rice (1814-1865), an Anglo-Irish civil servant and philanthropist. Rice served as the Secretary of the British Relief Association, where he used his first-hand experience of the Great Irish Famine to garner donations and aid. Interestingly, the first public donor to the Association was Queen Victoria, who sent a cheque to Rice for £1,000. He sent the payment back, complaining that it wasn't a big enough donation, and she doubled the donation in response. Collated, complete. Bound in a contemporary half-calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, very smart. Light rubbing and wear to the extremities and the spine, as well as to the joints. Illustrated bookplate to front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly foxed, particularly to the first and last few pages, and age-toning to the margins of text. Very Good .
