Translated from the original Spanish into French by Froment Champ-La-Garde, the vice counsel of France and bailiff of Versailles. With the errata to the final leaf. With a life of the author to the start of the work and lengthy introduction by Champ-Lagarde. This work, known as 'Caras Marruecas' or 'Lettres Africaines' is a set of ninety letters that portray the story of Gazel, a young Moroccan, who travels to Spain. He takes the opportunity to learn about the customs and culture of Spain and compares it to other European countries in these letters. The letters deal with the 'national character' of Spain and was a leading epistolary novel, written by Jose Cadalso. Cadalso was one of the canonical producers of Spanish Enlightenment literature. This scarce work is a corrected edition of the 1765 original quarto edition printed for the use of Dauphin on the order of Louis XIV. This task was intrusted to Carey by The Proprietors, as stated in the Preface, as latter editions of the Dauphin Nepos had been rendered corrupt by accidents of typography and unauthorised alterations. "On the whole, Gentle Reader, I think I may safely venture to say, that, however few and slender my improvements, I here nevertheless present you with a better edition of the Dauphin Nepos, than was originally presented to the dauphin himself, by order of the Grand Monarque." Advertisement by John Carey, 1819 In a full calf binding. There is mild wear to the extremities, including mild rubbing and edge wear. The front free-endpaper has been removed. The front board is held by the cords only, and the rear is just starting but still firm. The binding is generally tight and firm. This work was both a memoir and autobiography, in which the author describes his life through to 1774, puttin ga 'happy face on his days of loneliness&apos.
