Ross; Printed by and for Farror & Dobles ..., 1839. 5th Ed. Sm. 8vo. vi + 199pp. + [v] + 84pp. 3 engraved plates, 1 engraved port. Some light browning, with the signature of ‘Anne Newburgh 1837,’ early cloth backed boards, sl. chipped paper title label to sl. bumped spine, minor marking and signs of wear, corners bumped and lacking portion to leading corner of lower board.
¶ Apparently the first edition of the above work published in 1819 was the first book to be printed in Ross on Wye. Thomas Dudley Fosbroke [Fosbrooke], (1770–1842), antiquary. ODNB ‘... in 1810 Fosbrooke accepted the curacy of Walford, near Ross, Herefordshire, with the neighbouring parochial chapelry of Ruardean, Gloucestershire; he moved to Walford in 1811. For eighteen years he had studied for eight hours or more a day ... He also wrote tourist guides, the most popular being [the above] (1818; 6th edn, 1841) ...’

¶ Scarce. Osbert Henry Fynes Clinton (1869-1941) was Professor of French at the University College of North Wales (now the University of Wales, Bangor), from 1904 until his retirement in 1937. He was educated at Oxford University. His above book is regarded as a masterpiece and model for the study of dialect. It was first published in 1913 and reprinted in 1995.

Some light browning, marbled e.ps., ex.-libris William Wetenhall, contemporary mottled calf, gilt tooling to edges of boards (some wear), corners rubbed, intricate gilt tooled spine sl. rubbed with gilt loss and with gilt lettered title label to spine with loss at head and tail.
¶ Abbey lists 16 plates, Prideaux lists 17, in our experience issued with anywhere between 15-17 plates. ESTC T149236; Abbey Scenery 546 (First Edition); Prideaux p.337 (First Edition); Upcott 330. William Gilpin (1724–1804) English artist, Church of England cleric, schoolmaster and author. Gilpin travelled widely in Britain, with his notebook and sketching materials, in order to identify locations which offered that particular kind of beauty in landscape 'which is agreeable in a picture'. Picturesque tourism constituted 'a new object of pursuit', as he wrote the practice recommended was 'that of not merely describing; but of adapting the description of natural scenery to the principles of artificial landscape'.
