"The Eliot Arms, or Square & Compass (Square and Compass) , Tregadilett, was once a Freemason’s Lodge for French prisoners of war on parole in Launceston: (History supplied by R. F. Gilbert) The original building was built in the 14th century and it became a coaching inn during 1625. The Inn fell into disarray in the early 19th century, becoming a blacksmith’s shop, until 1840 when it reverted back to a pub and the second name ‘Eliot Arms’ was added. The French POW’s lodge is thought to have existed for five to seven years of the war and this is shown by two certificates of ‘The Lodge Consulate Maconne’ dated 1762 and 1763; one in French and one in English, issued to Robert Martin, organist at St Mary Magdalene Church. Both certificates had French signatures, five on the one of 1762 and four on the other dated 1763. Several of the Frenchmen joined the Dunheved Lodge, which must have existed during 1756-1773. The Eliot is reputed to be haunted by a not unfriendly ghost which is said to have been seen by customers and staff in recent years. Mr T Richards, landlord of the Eliot Arms, Compass, made an application to the Bench for an hours extension on the occasion of the Polyphant Cricket Club dinner given by Dr Serpell. The application was granted." (from The Post and Weekly, Feb, 1911). Very Good+ .

Nasby) (September 20, 1833 – February 15, 1888) was an American journalist and early political commentator during and after the American Civil War." "Locke's most famous works, the "Nasby Letters", were written in the character of, and over the signature of "Rev. Petroleum V(esuvius) Nasby", a Copperhead and Democrat. They have been described as "the Civil War written in sulphuric acid". [citation needed]Locke's fictional alter ego, Nasby, loudly championed the cause of the Confederate States of America from Secession onward, but did little to actively help it. After being conscripted into the Union Army he deserted to the Confederates, joining the fictional "Pelican Brigade". However, he found life in the Confederate Army "tite nippin" and soon deserted again. By the end of the Civil War he was back in civilian life. " (from Wikipedia). Good .

The book was later updated by Van Loon, then again by his son, and later still by other historians. He wrote many popular books aimed at young adults. As a writer he was known for emphasizing crucial historical events and giving a full picture of individual characters, as well as the role of the arts in history. He had an informal and thought-provoking style which, particularly in The Story of Mankind, included personal anecdotes. As an illustrator of his own books, he was known for his lively black-and-white drawings and his chronological diagrams. " (from Wikipedia). Very Good+ in Very Good- dust jacket .

Born in Labrador, one of 19 children of a Scottish Hudson's Bay Company cooper, Lyall grew up in a north dominated by white traders. After adventures that took him around the Arctic and down the Labrador coast, Ernie settled in Fort Ross in the Arctic Islands. He married an Inuit woman, Nipisha, and immediately became part of her extended family. Ernie writes warmly about his Inuit friends and family, and about daily life in the Arctic and the remarkable transformation of the north that has occured in the last 40 years." (From Good Reads). MACCREAGH, GORDON, White Waters and Black
MACCREAGH, GORDON
White Waters and Black
New York, NY: Grosset & Dunlap, 1926. Reprint. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; This book is in Very Good condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping and edge wear. There are a couple of small spots of light discoloration to the front cover of the book. The text pages are clean and bright, though there is some light generalized toning. "MacCreagh was the son of Scottish parents, possibly born in Perth, Indiana in 1889 while his father, an anthropologist, was visiting the United States to study Native Americans. However, it is much more likely that he was born and educated in Scotland and later studied in Paris and Germany. Mistakenly believing he had killed a fellow student in a German sabre duel, he fled to Southeast Asia, where he lived for several years. MacCreagh worked in Calcutta, Darjeeling, the Malay Islands, Tibet, China and Burma, where he collected animal specimens. He then travelled to Africa where he captured wild animals for British and US zoos. MacCreagh arrived in New York in 1911, where he later began to write fiction. He wrote several short adventure stories for magazines such as Argosy, Adventure and Short Stories. He travelled in South America on the Mulford Expedition. His book White Waters and Black published 1926 is an account of the expedition" (from Wikipedia) "The Mulford Biological Exploration of the Amazon Basin was a scientific expedition to the Amazon conducted in 1921. It was organized by Henry Hurd Rusby, who at age 64, was a well known explorer, a professor at Columbia University, and a staff member at the New York Botanical Garden. He hired Orland Emile White, a staff member at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, to assist with collection and handling of plant specimens. The expedition was financed by the H. K. Mulford Company, a pharmaceutical company. " (from Wikipedia). Very Good .

"Our organization was originally known as the Travellarians, a thirteen-letter word coined by (Mrs. ) Kitty Crabtree in recognition of the original 13 travel bureau girls. They also agreed to meet on the thirteenth of each month. Their first outings in 1928 were hosted inspections by the Hotelman’s Association in Yosemite and along the Central California Coast. The purpose of the tour was to acquaint them with the hotels and points of interest along the route. It was on May 13, 1928 that four of the ladies including our chapter member, (Miss) Elsie May Kirker, discussed the formation of an organization composed of women while on a 6-day tour from San Francisco to Santa Barbara. This enterprising group of ambitious women were up against the odds in a predominantly man’s world. Their purpose for the organization was to develop a spirit of cooperation, to establish and maintain a means for the exchange of ideas and methods, to afford a mutually pleasurable getting together, and to promote better service to the public, employers and to those for whom the members of this organization would act as representatives" (from SFTP—SAN FRANCISCO TRAVEL PROFESSIONALS: A History, Then & Now ).
