Canadian Pacific
Round the World Cruise: Empress of Britain 1931-1932 (Ninth Annual)
Montreal, Canada, Canadian Pacific, 1931. First Edition. Softcover. Size: 4to 11" - 13" tall. Imagine preparing to take a "world cruise" that will span 128 days and visit 81 different ports . . . and in a ship that hadn't yet hit the water . . . In the 1930s, several cruise-ships were traveling globally, but Canadian Pacific’s Empress of Britain outshined them all in promise and potential. The Empress of Britain set new standards of efficiency and luxury. The itinerary is comprehensive: "sight-seeing, pleasure and education considerations have all been taken into account." The ship was to stay in many ports for days on end, giving the passengers a chance to really see the sites and learn from locals. 42,500 tons in weight, 758 feet in length, with luxury options including mail and cables, wireless and telephone, photography, a gift shop, laundry, and entertainment. This brochure was produced prior to the ship sitting water. The brochure was printed before the ship was completed so all the images of the ship are renderings nine altogether. The brochure is a sterling condition softcover copy, with unfurled tips, tight binding, and clean internals, showing only very slight shelf- and edge-wear. Nine illustrations total, one exterior and eight interior. Illustrated, printed wraps, glossy pictorial, at 64 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Mr. Yorick [Laurence Sterne]
A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy
Providence, Rhode Island, Doyle & Hathaway, 1827. . Hardcover. Size: 64mo 3" - 4. This edition of a beloved novel by Laurence Sterne (1713-1768), published first just a few weeks before his death, reproduced an earlier reprinting by Thomas Tegg, London, from 1809, and features two black-and-white engravings on steel by Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827). A cute little tome, not quite a miniature book, but close, measuring 4 1/4" x 2 5/8" tall and wide, respectively. Bound in light tan cloth, mottled and soiled a bit, spine head and foot bumped a bit, slight cracking of front paste-down, but with paper label to spine still barely abraded. Inside front flap is penned "No. 49" and then opposite is a gift presentation from an T. E. Coopsay (sp. ?) from June 16, 1828 to a B. Noyes (sp.?) and with extreme flourish. Laurence Sterne's class work of fiction helped to establish travel writing in the 18th century as a common and popular genre of writing. The engraving at frontis is of a bemused author, tissue-guarded, foxed, and that at (second) title page is of a downtrodden woman sitting on a bench, a leashed dog at her feet, and a standing man offering his hand to her. 161 pp. and a page's worth of publisher's other offerings.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Varthema, Lodovico di; Jones, John Winter, translator; Sir Richard Carnac
The Itinerary of Ludovico Di Varthema of Bologna from 1502 to 1508; with a Discourse on Varthema and His Travels in Southern Asia by Sir Richard Carnac Temple
London, The Argonaut Press, 1928. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Size: Large 8vo 9" - 10. Two fascinating treatises bound into one: 1) The Itinerary of Ludovico di Varthema of Bologna from 1502 to 1508, by di Varthema himself; 2) With a discourse on Varthema and his travels in southern Asia, by Sir Richard Carnac Temple. The colophon notes that this volume is the fourth publication of The Argonaut Press and is limited to 975 copies on Japon Vellum, numbered 1 to 975, this being unnumbered. Laid in is a retrospectus from the press as to the first three volumes in the series. Printed for the Press by Walter Lewis of The University Press, Cambridge. Bound quite sturdily in a short quarto format, with what appears to be vellum backing and blue denim cloth thereover, with a gorgeous gilt-stamped illustration to cover. lxxxvi to first treatise (Temple's); [1], 1-121 [3] pp. to second (being the original itinerary). Five maps, two illustrations, being of the river Barrage and a facsimile of the title page of the true First Edition, published in 1510, written in Italian. and bound-in silk ribbon bookmark, a bit worn at the ends. Spine head and foot are bumped, backing is worn a bit and mottled a bit, but the binding is uber-solid. Deckle-cut fore-edges, gilt top-edges. Comprises the reissuing of an 1863 translation of the original Italian edition of 1510 recounting di Varthema's "Itinerario." Preface by N.M. Penzer. Interestingly, it claims an eyewitness account of what became known eventually as the United Arab Emirates. di Verthema was also the first "Westerner" to visit Mecca and report on it. He writes sensitively and positively about the natural environs, cultures and (Muslim) peoples of the Arabian Gulf. He wrote as an interested, learned ethnologist, and recorded notes on geography, ritual, social-structure, urban settings, economy and household organization. He was even imprisoned as a "Christian spy," but sought and obtained his release and then traveled on to southwest Arabia. The second treatise, the "Discourse" by Sir Richard Carnac Temple, breaks down Varthema's route and critiques the veracity and accuracy of his account which, with the benefit of several centuries' hindsight, he finds solid. Very nice copy of a scarce item.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Very Good
