Varthema, Lodovico di; Jones, John Winter, translator; Sir Richard Carnac
The Itinerary of Ludovico Di Varthema of Bologna from 1502 to 1508; with a Discourse on Varthema and His Travels in Southern Asia by Sir Richard Carnac Temple
London, The Argonaut Press, 1928. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Size: Large 8vo 9" - 10. Two fascinating treatises bound into one: 1) The Itinerary of Ludovico di Varthema of Bologna from 1502 to 1508, by di Varthema himself; 2) With a discourse on Varthema and his travels in southern Asia, by Sir Richard Carnac Temple. The colophon notes that this volume is the fourth publication of The Argonaut Press and is limited to 975 copies on Japon Vellum, numbered 1 to 975, this being unnumbered. Laid in is a retrospectus from the press as to the first three volumes in the series. Printed for the Press by Walter Lewis of The University Press, Cambridge. Bound quite sturdily in a short quarto format, with what appears to be vellum backing and blue denim cloth thereover, with a gorgeous gilt-stamped illustration to cover. lxxxvi to first treatise (Temple's); [1], 1-121 [3] pp. to second (being the original itinerary). Five maps, two illustrations, being of the river Barrage and a facsimile of the title page of the true First Edition, published in 1510, written in Italian. and bound-in silk ribbon bookmark, a bit worn at the ends. Spine head and foot are bumped, backing is worn a bit and mottled a bit, but the binding is uber-solid. Deckle-cut fore-edges, gilt top-edges. Comprises the reissuing of an 1863 translation of the original Italian edition of 1510 recounting di Varthema's "Itinerario." Preface by N.M. Penzer. Interestingly, it claims an eyewitness account of what became known eventually as the United Arab Emirates. di Verthema was also the first "Westerner" to visit Mecca and report on it. He writes sensitively and positively about the natural environs, cultures and (Muslim) peoples of the Arabian Gulf. He wrote as an interested, learned ethnologist, and recorded notes on geography, ritual, social-structure, urban settings, economy and household organization. He was even imprisoned as a "Christian spy," but sought and obtained his release and then traveled on to southwest Arabia. The second treatise, the "Discourse" by Sir Richard Carnac Temple, breaks down Varthema's route and critiques the veracity and accuracy of his account which, with the benefit of several centuries' hindsight, he finds solid. Very nice copy of a scarce item.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Very Good
