Darvel Nature Note Book; a Handwritten Journal with Botanical Illustrations
Not Stated, None, 1889 . Cloth. Beautifully illustrated in colour by hand, this is the charming late nineteenth century journal of an Englishwoman's summer holiday in East Ayreshire. A beautifully illustrated handwritten and illustrated journal, describing the 1889 summer holiday of a group of Englishwomen in Scotland.While the journal, titled 'Darvel Nature Book' to the front board, consists of 172 pages, only eleven feature the writing and illustrations of the former owner.Consisting of five entries, dating between the 6th and 24th of August 1889, the author of the volume firstly describes her and her group of thirteen visiting the town of Millport, on the island of Great Cumbrae. There they visited an aquarium, and a man named Mr Gray showed them a number of specimens under a microscope, along with 'two shrimps and a crab which were in a bottle, they didn't seem to be on the best of terms&apos.On the 16th of August the author and three companions took a walk around the parish of Loudon, to the east of Kilmarnock, and observed a number of trees and plants while walking the grounds of Loudon Castle. On the 17th, they observed ducks and swans in the Ayreshire town of Burnhouse, before taking a train to the nearby town of Darvel.The remaining entries concern the observations of local plants and wildlife, all in the East Ayreshire region.With fourteen beautifully rendered vignette and full page illustrations of local fauna and flora. In the original cloth binding. Light fading to back strip and board perimeters, with light rubbing to spine head and tail. Front hinge strained, but firmly held.
