First edition, bound in the publisher's original quarter cloth with paper covered boards.Published by The Mercury Press, which was a subsidiary of The Shanghai Evening Post, an English newspaper directed at American businesses in the city. This interesting work was published just prior to the Japanese invasion during World War Two. This is Volume IV, or the July 1934 edition, which is said to include a complete, up-to-date list of firms, with more than eight hundred new additions and three hundred removals. This directory provides important information on the operating of this bustling city, with the 'Hong's Who's Who' of telephone numbers, addresses and notable businessmen. Lacking the original folding map, although this has been replaced by a photocopy, which is loosely inserted in the work. Filled with original advertisements, including to the front cover and stamps to the fore edge.China Fidelity Trading Company stamp to title page. In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally, sound with slight rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Marks to the boards and cloth, with small patches of damp staining to the rear board. Front hinge is slightly strained, but holding firm. Light marking to endpapers, with tide mark to the rear endpaper. Internally, the first few pages are slightly tender, but otherwise firmly bound. Stanley was a noted explorer, mainly known for his exploration of Central Africa and his successful search for missionary David Livingstone, as well as for his search of the sources of the Nile and Congo rivers, his command of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, and the work he undertook for King Leopold II of the Belgians, resulting in the occupation of the Congo Basin region - which eventually helped his name being regarded with with much controversy due to the atrocities which were perpetrated against the native people. Dated from Jisc. Externally generally sound with a light shelf wear and minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, a minor chipping and loss to the head of the spine. Spine has darkened. The very scarce contract made between the Sudan Government and the engineers employed to construct the Sennar Dam on the Blue Nile, revealing fascinating insights into the irrigation techniques of the day. A fascinating and very scarce publication from the Sudan Government detailing the contract signed on the 17th October 1922 between Sir Edgar Edwin Bernard, Financial Secretary of the Sudan Government, and the contractors - S. Peason and Sons - employed to construct a dam on the Blue Nile.The Sennar Dam is an irrigation dam on the Blue Nile designed by Scottish engineer Sir Murdoch MacDonald, and completed in 1925. This contract contains information on 'specification, schedule of prices, and other schedules and bond', along with a discussion of methods for the settlement of disputes, canalization, valuation of materials, sanitary and health services, and materials.This dam was a key aspect of the Gezira Scheme, one of the world's largest irrigation projects, started by the British while the area was governed as a part of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. It involves water from the Blue Nile being distributed through canals and ditches to tenant farms lying between the Blue and White Nile rivers, for the purposes of growing cotton.From the library of Frederic Newhouse (1883-1969), sometime inspector-general of Egyptian irrigation in the Sudan, and with his contemporary inscription to the head of the front wraps, dated 1923.
