London (Illustrated) a Complete Guide to the Places of Amusements, Objects of Interest, Parks, Clubs, Markets, Docks, Principal Railway Routes, Leading Hotels, and Also a Director, in a Concise Form of First Class Reliable Houses in the Various Branches of Trade
London, Henry Herbert and Co, 1879. First edition. Cloth. A very scarce first edition of the 1879 edition of this interesting guide to London, illustrated throughout with chromolithograph borders, and contemporary photographs. The first edition of this work. A very scarce work. A beautiful work, offering a detailed guide to London at the end of the nineteenth century. This work offers a very nice snapshot of Victorian London and the sights and interests that could be found in London within that era. These include Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's Cathedral, the National Portrait Gallery, the British Museum, and the Royal Albert Hall, which was only very recently completed when this volume was published. Obviously all of these interests are still open for visitation in London. Including a list of hotels, restaurants, objects of greatest interest, government buildings, suburbs, places of amusements, railway stations, steamship lines, and railway and steamship routes. During this period, London was the world's largest city, and so provided an interesting attraction for people to visit. This volume was the eighth year that the guide had been published. It is a scarce work, but it seems that it was published from 1872 to 1883. Illustrated with twenty-eight full page engravings, thirteen mounted photographs, one map showing the Metropolitan Railway and the District Railway, and chromolithograph borders to each page. The mounted photographs show celebrities of the principal theatres. Collated, complete. This work is a quarto. The first gathering has no signature, but the signatures continue as b4, B-Z4, AA-FF4. Original price, as stated to the tail of the title page, was twenty-one shillings. The first edition In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Minor discolouration and marking to the boards and spine, a little heavier to the rear board. Front hinge is strained but remains firm. Internally, binding is strained in places. Pages are bright and generally clean with some handling marks. Photographs are faded with some light marks. Map facing page 132 is detached but present, with edgewear and dusting. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .

This is followed by four individually paginated works, each with their own title page. The first report discusses the manufacture, sale, and tax of salt in British India, specifically in Bengal and Madras. The second report was given on the 29th July 1856, and continues the discussion of salt found in the previous report. The third work is an appendix to these two reports, featuring vignette illustrations, and illustrated with one coloured chart, two folding colour charts, and one plate. The final work is 'Maps and Plans referred to by Mr. Plowden in the Salt Report and Appendix', illustrated with a colour folding salt map of India, four colour folding plans of Bombay, two folding colour plans of Madras, and five folding colour plans of Bengal. Collated, complete.Rebound in the cloth binding of the Home Office Library.A fascinating insight into the logic behind the mid nineteenth century British implementation of salt taxation in India, as a means of generating revenue for their colonial administration. The British colonial administration in India declared salt a government monopoly, taking full control over its production, distribution, and sale. Indians were prohibited from producing or trading salt independently. Instead, they were forced to buy salt exclusively from government-controlled facilities, often at high prices due to the imposed taxes and levies. This policy faced significant opposition, with Ghandi seeing the salt tax as a symbol of British Oppression. Rebound in cloth, with calf spine labels, and endpapers renewed. Light marks to spine labels, otherwise externally excellent. Hinges reinforced. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright, and generally clean. Neat page numbers to head of majority of leaves, with inscription to verso of title page. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good Indeed .

Each illustration is on a single page, though every gathering remains uncut so there is an image to every recto and verso that is exposed. It is unclear who the author is upon using the automatic translator. However, these works seem to be in the style of Hobun Kikuchi, a Japanese artist from Osaka. This work has a variety of images of birds, fish and insects surrounded by plants. In original paper wraps. Externally, spotted to the rear wrap.
