BART, PETER
Fade out - the Calamitous Final Days of Mgm
London, Simon and Schuster. 1990, First Edition. (ISBN: 0671710605). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with VG+ dustjacket which is price clipped. First UK edition. It took Kirk Kerkorian nearly 20 years to wheel and deal to the point wher all that remained of MGM was the faint meow of Leo the Lion. But the descent of that once regal movie powerhouse was occasioned by no small amount of glamour, humour and greed. In the book we are treated to the big picture of a world-class studio over the past 20 years: a time of mergers and junk bond offerings, corporate musical chairs (with Kerkorian the only constant), the selling off of the film library (twice) and the company back lot. Even the historic sets and wardrobes for many of the MGM classics went on the block. Meanwhile MGM produced a succssion of movies: some of them successful, some sleazy, too many of them flops. This is not only a bizarre drama of colourful characters propelled across an Alice-in-Wonderland landscape littered with dashed hopes and bitter betrayals, but also a powerful story of corporate demolition in the 1980's. 2. Fine/Very Good.

Silver title with silver motif to front on blue boards which have a small indentation to front top edge and just a touch of wear to spine head and tail. BERSTL, JULIUS
The Sun's Bright Child - the Imaginary Memoirs of Edmund Keane
London, Hammond, Hammond. 1946, First Edition. Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Gilt title on red cloth boards which are clean and unmarked with no wear. Internally very clean, tight and unmarked. A Very Good+ copy. Dustjacket has wear to edges and some small losses to top and is not price clipped. 192 pages. 21 illustrations. Illustrated endpapers. It was not the author's intention to give an ordinary factual account of Edmund Keane's life, instead, he felt impelled to write this story of an adventurous, uncommonly varied stage player's life in autobiographical form and, at the same time, to show the man Kean as a type of the 'eternal mime' who, in the course of a glorious career, learned to distinguish clearly the illusions of the boards and the reality of the world. J. Berstl had no need to add any fictional embellishments to the facts of Kean's kaleidoscopic life, but he felt that a most vital and telling element would have been lacking had he limited himself to a mere description or report. NOT EX LIB C3A. Very Good/Good.

BLOOM, KEN
Broadway - an Encyclopedic Guide to the History, People and Places of Times Square
New York, Facts On File. 1991, First Edition. (ISBN: 0816012490). Hard Cover, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket. xviii + 442 pages. Profusely illustrated. Broadway is the centre of American theatre and the neon-lit heart of American popular culture. In a style as lively and entertaining as the Broadway scene itself, Ken Bloom covers the major theatres, playwrights, composers, lyricists, producers and performers who have, over the past century, made Broadway the best-known street name in the world. But he doesn't stop there. Broadway is famous not just for entertainment, but for its people - the entrepreneurs both legitimate and not so, the hangers-on and hookers, the bons vivants and the gangsters, and the reporters and writers who recorded (and perhaps sometimes created) the legends that have made Broadway. Complete cross references are complemented by a thorough index making this a valuable research tool. BOGARDE, DIRK
Snakes and Ladders
London, Chatto and Windus. 1978, First. (ISBN: 070112377X). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which id not price-clipped. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING. 339 pages and 20 illustrations. Illustrated endpapers. The second volume of the actor's biography in which his story continues from the trial of army training camp at Catterick to the greatest challenge of his film career, the role of von Aschenbach in Death in Venice. Challenges have been a constant feature of Dirk Bogarde's life, some brought by chance, some self-imposed. It was an accident which altered his army career, a mistake which launched him into films. But his disregard of Noel Coward's advice ('Never, ever go near the cinema'), his determination to prove himself as an actor, and when the moment came to leave the commercial cinema, his personal commitment to films that required courage and imagination to make - these changes came from within him. Boorman enjoyed an archetypal English suburban boyhood in the 1940's and 1950's, attending Catholic school and finding his first employment running a dry-cleaning business. But his passion was for film, getting his big break during the 'goldrush' of British television in the 1960's. After directing several innovative documentaries for the BBC, he graduated to motion pictures, and eventually to his first masterpiece 'Point Blank', which inaugurated his profound friendship with Lee Marvin. BRAGG, MELVYN
Rich - the Life of Richard Burton
London, Hodder and Stoughton. 1988. (ISBN: 0340405376). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. From unpublished letters and memoirs, from new interviews with those who have never spoken, above all from 350, words of Burton's notebooks never before seen, a portrait emerges of a man of multitudes, of vast qualities, immense flaws, wonderful ambitions, crippling melancholy and illnesses, something of a scholar, a fighter and a reckless warrior who lived the life of a legend from his beloved Wales.
