London, Waller, 1741. First edition. Leather. The first English edition of this important treatise regarding European theatre in the eighteenth century. This is the first edition of the English translation of Riccoboni's classic work. Written by Luigi Riccoboni, an Italian actor and theatre writer. He was the director of the Comedie-Italienne in Paris from 1716-1731. The preface notes that Riccoboni visited 'all the stages in Europe' and that this work is a result of his researches. The translator notes 'from this short review I hope it will appear of what importance the stage is even in a political sense, in keeping alive that spirit which forms the true character of every people&apos. The translator to this work notes that this review of European stage may improve the theatre of Britain, which is why this translation has been made. With the engraved half title, and many headbands and tail pieces. With the bookshelf ticket of Pull Court Library, Worcestershire and the bookplate of Buchley Park Worcestershire to the front pastedown. Blind stamp to the front endpaper of Pull Court Library. Riccoboni has written several chapters on the theatre of France, Italy, Spain, Germany, and England. There are also chapters on Greek and French tragedy. A very smart copy of this important work. In a full calf binding. Rebacked, with original boards preserved and the spine laid down. Small worm holes to the joints. A few light marks to the boards. In a full calf binding. Externally, front joint is strained, front hinge is weak. Patch of loss of leather to the front board. A little discolouration to the spine and extremities of the boards. Some light rubbing and a few minor marks to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Small cracks to the head and tail of the rear joint. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age-toned and clean, with only a few occasional handling marks and spots. Signed by many notable figures such as: Sybil Thorndike, the British actress who 'Saint Joan' was written especially for; Prime Minister James Ramsay Macdonald; Philip Snowdon, Chancellor of the Exchequer; Morgan Jones, Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education; Arthur Henderson, Home Secretary. These signatures are to a dedication plate tipped in to the front endpaper, 'To J D Morgan, in friendship, with the best of good wishes from. Cardiff: December 1924.'  There are thirty-five names signed to the dedication plate, most likely with association to Macdonald's ministry and the Labour Party. The signature of Sybil Thorndike is below the date on the dedication plate, insinuating this was signed afterwards. A fantastic copy of this play. Limited print run of 750 copies on handmade paper.  In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding. With light shelfwear to the extremities and minor bumping to the head and tail of spine. Loosely inserted to 'Collections, Volume XV' is a letter from Richard Rowland of St. Anne's College, Oxford, to Professor Bate, dated 1994. Three of the books are inscribed by "A. J. Bate" to the front free end paper. These volumes are from the library of Sir Jonathan Bate, a British scholar and author who specializes in Shakespeare, Romanticism and Ecocriticism. The Malone Society, founded in 1906, is a text publication and scholarly society devoted to the study of sixteenth and early seventeenth century drama. Featuring illustrations and photographs, articles, records of performances throughout the year, list of agents, list of playwrights, and relevant advertisements. Including early photographs of Mameena performed at The Globe, and David Copperfield at His Majesty's Theatre, staring Jessie Winter and Fred Ross. Eleven yearbooks from the years 1915, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, and 1960. "It is an important publication for actors throughout the country, as it contains regular advertisements for available jobs and provides an opportunity for various acts to promote themselves to agents and directors." The 1959 yearbook also contains a table of job roles, both stage and front of house, within the west end. Recording aspects such as the role, pay and hours. Writer John Osborne submitted his script for Look Back in Anger in response to an advertisement by the soon-to-be-launched Royal Court Theatre in the 1956 edition, and Dusty Springfield responded to an advertisement for female singers in the 1958 edition. All in original cloth or paper bindings. Externally, all reasonably smart with only minor shelfwear to the spines. 1960's yearbook has some marks to the boards and 1952's year book has minor loss to the spine. 1915 yearbook's front hinge is strained, 1949's front board has light fading. Paris, Calmann Levy, 1897. Leather. A collection of plays by French dramatist Alfred de Vigny. Comprising of Chatterton, La Marechale D'Ancre, Quitte Pour La Peur, La More de Venise, and Shylock. Two of these are adaptations and translations of Shakespeare's Othello and The Merchant of Venice. Alfred de Vigny was a French poet and early leader of Romanticism. He wrote many translations of Shakespeare as well as many original novels and plays. In a quarter morocco binding with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, very smart with patches of light rubbing to the head and tail of spine and to the raised bands. Further patches of light rubbing to the joints. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Prior owner's inscription to the verso of front endpaper, D Nicholson. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age toned, heavier to edges. Occasional light spots. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
