The first edition of this work, complete in three volumes. With errata slips to volume II and III. Alfred Bunn was an English theatrical manager. He was stage manager of Drury Lane Theatre, London, Theatre Roayl Birmingham as well as Covent Garden Theatre. Bunn's control of the London theatres was extremely successful in an artistic sense. Nearly every leading actor of tthe age played under his management. He also sought to establish English opera, translating many operas. A fascinating work, giving great insight into nineteenth century theatre. This work discusses the organisational nature of the role, as well as featuring several anecdotes and passages on specific individuals in the industry. In contemporary full cloth bindings. First edition, in the publisher's smart white cloth binding, with gilt detailing and a yapp edge. 'The Adoration of the Soldiers' is a short mystery play which was suggested to Emile Cammaerts during a visit to the Belgian trenches. It is written in the style of a traditional Nativity, being a genuine and simple story presenting the spirit of the soldier. The play was written during the Second World War, with the aim to show similarities between the strength of the soldiers and the same sentiment which prompted the Crusades. Written by Belgian playwright and author, Emile Cammaerts, with the English translation alongside the French by Tita Brand-Cammaerts. Collated complete. A souvenir for those attending the play 'King Arthur' by J. Comyns Carr as at its first performance on 12th January 1895. This work includes a list of all cast, scenery, and illustrations of key scenes. At this time, King Arthur was played by Henry Irving, an English stage actor of the Victorian era, known as an actor-manager for taking responsibility of supervising all parts of the productions for season after season at the West End's Lyceum Theatre. The play was written by Joseph William Comyns Carr, an English drama and art critic, author, poet and playwright. Carr also wrote essays, books, plays, librettos, English-language adaptations of foreign works and stage adaptations of Dickens novels and classic tales like 'King Arthur' and 'Faust&apos. The first edition, first impression of the work. Presentation copy, signed by the author to the half title. Inscription reads: 'To Rod, With best wishes and great admiration, Max. (P.S. Thanks for 'My Mother Said..' The credit is entirely yours.)' The recipient was Rod Hall, a noted literary agent. With two loosely inserted letters, one from Rod Hall to Max Stafford-Clark regarding both the aforementioned 'My Mother Said' and including an endorsement from Rod to Max regarding a play entitled 'No Remission' by playwright Rod Williams. The second letter, unrelated to the work itself, is from Laura Cecil, literary agent of children's books, sent to Rod Hall, regarding the possible adaptation of a novel by Jonathan Gathorne-Hardy to television. Both included letters demonstrate Hall's deep involvement and influence in both literary and dramatic circles. Letters to George is a fascinating insight into the rehearsal methods of Stafford-Clark, told through the medium of letters Max sent to eighteenth century playwright George Farquhar during his restaging of his play, The Recruiting Officer&apos. Containing her plays Love and Law, The Two Guardians and The Rose, Thistle and Shamrock. From the Regency library of Elizabeth Greenly, later Lady Elizabeth Coffin Greenly. Elizabeth Greenly, born at Titley Court, Herefordshire, was a noted and varied collector. She kept prolific diaries from 1784 until her death in 1839 which included her responses to current events and occasions in her daily life. Among the diaries many names and anecdotes of celebrities of the time appear, including Lord Byron, Marie Antoinette, Mary Wollstonecraft and Hannah More. She was known to comment on customs of foreign countries to which she and her friends had travelled, and had a keen interest in scientific discoveries and advancements including medicine and archaelogy.The Greenly library contents show Elizabeth Greenly's numerous interests including: Welsh causes, Science, topography, travel, Bibliana and literature, particularly female poets. The library contains many first editions of contemporary works, and many are signed or contain her bookplate. The library contained over one thousand volumes which show the diversity and depth of her interests and give an insight into the life of this fascinating collector. These works come directly from the sale of the Titley Court estate.Maria Edgeworth was a prolific Anglo-Irish writer of adults' and children's literature. Her literary efforts have often been considered melodramatic rather than realistic, and her bibliography is extensive, ranging from novels to plays as well as essays.
