Two very scarce works, both in the original French, from French watchmakers.These vanishingly scarce works facilitating wheelwork calculations for watch and clockmakers.The first work is the 1817 first edition of horologer Francois Chastel's 'Recueil de Tables Progressives pour les Vibrations du Régulateur&apos. Signed by Chastel himself to the tail of the final leaf of the preface. Chastel signed all copies, 'as this work requires a lot of accuracy in printing&apos.His work presents a table of vibrations and revolutions of parts of watches, with information derived from years of study. The introduction notes that 'some of his results move away a little from the rigorous precision towards which the Mathematician tends; but they have sufficient accuracy for all watchmaking needs&apos.The second work is the 1805 second edition of horologer Francois Arlaud's work on the mechanics of watchmaking, written after spending a number of years observing the construction methods of workers in watch factories. His tables present the revolutions of cogs and wheels within watches.Two very scarce works bound together, and held in a cloth covered clamshell box.With the bookplate of Leon Leroy to the front pastedown, and the inscription of Henry Alliez to the front free endpaper. Contemporary inscriptions and notations to the verso of the first title page, and the head of page 1 of the first work. Further notations to page 20 of the second work. In paper covered boards, held in a cloth covered clamshell box. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with paper label to back strip lightly age toned. Clamshell box in excellent condition. Bookplate to front pastedown, with inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages a touch age toned, but generally clean and bright.
