An informative industrial and archaeological work, which is phase one of a study on roads and routes within Somerset, signed by one of the authors Brian J. Murless and including eight folding maps. Very scarce, limited edition.With a slip signed by one of the authors of this work, Brian J. Murless, which states that this work is two of ninety copies. Illustrated with various in-text illustrations as well as eight folding maps, which depict various different routes within Somerset. This is an interesting work, published on behalf of the Somerset Industrial Archaeological Society, which provides a history and initial analysis of old turnpike routes within Somerset. Turnpike trusts were bodies set up from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries, and took tolls through toll-gates and side-bars. They starts to decline with the coming of the railways, but certain routes can still be uncovered through modern layouts, foundry marks, and other details. Contents include 'Highway History', 'Turnpike Trusts', 'Gazetteer', and 'Maps', and look at certain areas like Bristol, Bridgwater, Ilminster, and Taunton.This work includes an additional stapled pamphlet that has been inserted into the work, titled 'The Langport, Somerton, and Castle Cary Turnpike Trust: An Introduction', an essay written by C. A. Buchanan explaining basic concepts within industrial archaeology.The Somerset Industrial Archaeological Society (SIAS) was founded in 1972, and focuses upon aspects of industrial history and heritage within Somerset. Work within the society includes excavations, site surveys, listing of significant buildings, and 'rescue operations for old machinery&apos. Written by J. B. Bentley and B. J. Murless, two members of the Somerset Industrial Archaeological Society. Collated, complete. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally, smart. Minimal edge wear to the wraps and a few spots to the margins of front and rear wraps. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean, as are the folding maps.
